Or any other random dungeon/mineshaft chest, which aren't that hard (villages aren't even that hard with the latest world gen) most especially with the endless caves and mineshafts as they currently are, not to mention how many temples are around these days (jungles, desert). Lighting it would require the player to build their portal near some lava and just use flammable material to transfer it. But with a bit of exploration one could very easily go to the nether with nothing more than some wood tools. I have yet to see another mod that would give you itemized obsidian without any diamonds at all, if you know some I'd like to see them.
Regarding Obsidian, I'm going to have to give it a hardy "Aye". The one thing in EE2 that had any sort of balance was the fact that you couldn't make anything until it was first unlocked. Mind you, I use "balance" loosely, since finding one of something meant you had (effectively) endless amounts of it. It wasn't perfect, but it was certainly a good start of an idea. It seems like it'd be a heck of a rewrite to re-implement "learning" materials first, but to make an analogy to the alchemists of old: you need to be familiar with gold before you can start changing lead into it.
Anywho, glad to see Equivalent Exchange making the transition beyond 1.2.5. I like the changes I see so far, and I have hopes on what I want to see in the future (just like everyone else in this thread). And if there isn't a good way to compact junk items into useful ones, I might just have to learn to code a lossy Energy Condenser for personal use. (Also, I'm really curious how a new FTB map would function without an energy condenser/tablet. But that's for Slowpoke to figure out ^_^). Keep coding, and have fun!

Metallurgy: Steel can mine obsidian. Needs Iron + Manganese.
RP2: Only need a block breaker (IE: Iron Pick) to break obsidian.
Thermal Expansion: Only need to pump lava and water into a block it has, and it gives obsidian.
IC2: 2 lava cells + 2 water cells = 1 obsidian

...There's quite a few.
Looks like all those at least require iron which would require at least stone tools. If the caves and mineshafts weren't so prevalent I might be more incline to be ok with the gold requirement, I just remember the first 3 worlds I created after buying this game I ended up with far and away more gold from chests than what I was able to find and mine myself. But I guess in light of those mods (minus RP and it's non-existence for 1.4.x) it doesn't really matter, still think it's to easy to get that way though. Actually in light of those anyone that actually uses diamonds to get obsidian is doing it wrong.
lol. Well, it's more complicated than just popping those into a crafting table. You have to craft an inscription table, which is a blank rune plus 8 planks. Blank runes are 7 cobble in a particular pattern which yeilds two blank runes. You need 4 of those to craft enough colored runes to inscribe the spell for Dig: one black rune, one orange rune, one red rune and one yellow rune. Runes are colored by combining a blank one with the appropriate dye. A blank spell scroll is two sticks with paper. It's pretty cool though.
The point, of course, is that other mods will also allow you to get obsidian without finding diamonds, or even mining iron. So, I don't really think the recipe in EE3 is overpowered.
You got me all kinds of curious now, that sounds like a sweet mod, is it 1.4 yet will definitely have to try it out (fiending for thaumcraft and it sounds like that could tide me over).
Ok listen up : here's why perfect transmutations are bad. Look, if you lose nothing, then that means that (assuming you are using a crafting table mod so it doesn't take more than 1 click) there's no reason to even look through all of your chests if you need something. Just grab a stack of something transmutable that gives enough "points" for what you want from the FIRST chest you find, and bam you have what you want.
It totally destroys most of the gameplay.-snip-
THEN DON'T USE THE MOD! honestly, it's called EQUIVILANT exchange, that means lossless by definition. and in Alchemy it's meant to be op!
Pahimar has already stated, multiple times now, that he will not be working on EE2 anymore and is not allowed to give permission to anyone to update it, as the original mod is not his own.
Then find someone with good skills to get permission from the original author to continue updating EE2(I have little to no skill with java or i would ask them myself)

It'd be entirely sensible to make "Lossless" transmutation into a goal, though, I'd think - to right the game so that getting an Exchange that really is Equivalent is the target of most of the early play in the development and creation arc.
I dunno if Pahimar is aiming that way, of course, but that's a thing.

x3n0 has complete trust and confidence in the direction Pahimar is taking with EE3 and is not going to undermine him on that. Additionally, x3n0 is the first guy to admit that, particularly in SMP environments, EE2 is completely brokenly overpowered.
I'd sooner expect forge compatibility from BTW than x3n0 giving anybody that permission.
I'd say leave EE2 for SSP and EE3 for SMP, that way people who like EE2 can still have it without being completely overpowered in SMP. But it's just the way I think.

It's not called Equivalent Exchange because of lossless definition. It's called Equivalent Exchange simply because x3n0 wanted to use a catchy name from the anime to get people's attention The name of the mod does not imply lossless transmutation at all. In fact even in the anime (both of them) it's explained that what appears to be lossless transmutation is actually lossy because you have to account for the energy to do the transmutation. Philosopher Stones have limits on their energy before they give out, as do the Red Stones.
Expect "Lossless" transmutation to be an extreme end goal/achievement, if I add them at all. You can get really close in my current plans, but not all the way. Trust me - it's way more fun this way You might not be able to envision it yet but trust me and the people that have tested this (as I'm willing to bet you haven't).

Can't do. Since MC 1.3.2 and onwards everything is SMP by nature.

Won't happen. x3n0 didn't want EE2 to continue further just like I didn't. It needed some new mechanics and changes, and that's what it's getting. Don't focus so much on the past and look forwards to the future. Don't expect him to give permission to anyone else for this - we just talked yesterday in fact and I was told again that this is "my show" now.
Don't worry - you will like the new mechanics in the end

I just want to say, I looked at the github, and although I can't read code, the art looks awesome. Can't wait. I don't suppose you'll give us spoilers on what the stuff besides the divining rod, the alchemical ash, and the alchemy bags are?

Kind of like TC2 cauldrons used to work like, right? Upgrades improving efficiency, while costing more to upgrade, etc, etc.
Will the P-Stone recipes become lossy as well? (8 Iron->1 Gold while 1 gold ->7 Iron, or some such.)
I have noticed a Bug in equivalent exchange, not sure if in 3, or whatevs. But there is a duplication glitch involiving RM furnaces, in which if you put an item, (stackable, not emc value required) into your bottom right slot of your inventory (not hotbar), then you shift+left click it, it will jump again into your inventory, and be duplicated. Works in SMP,SSP.

You should add a magical wand that works like the mining laser in IC2. And I know most people will think this is a bad idea, but only your opinion matters.
PS. If there is already a magical wand, then just ignore this post.

That is a ee2 bug, pahimar stated he is not going to work any more on ee2 or thier bugs, unless its gamebreaking. Which their is none

But how would it work, it would be kinda pointless. It would have to be a range or something, something that people would want to get it, if its just one block, most people would just a pick
Why did you take out condensers? that was one of the main reasons people got the mod(Besides the flying ring)! Ok,ok I guess i know why you took it out, BECAUSE YOU HATE US

I know of one. Ars Magica's dig spell will allow you to get itemized obsidian for nothing more than wood, cobblestone, squid ink, flowers and paper.

Says something about the whole issue of "balance" when dealing with mods, that's for sure.

It's full of slime and furnaces and fireballs and magic gems and explosions and lightning.
