wow as i thought, 1.8 mods are mainly a bunch of noname mods
maybe in 1.9 it will get better.
Thanks for the insult, but if you look at some of the mods, they are good. For example, searching for minestrapp 4 in the google search you can find one of the best mods out there. If you also take your time in the mcf modlist, thaumcraft is in there as well as some other great smaller ones.
1.8 is not barren, its full of little sprouts of life.
FYI, World Downloader is out for 1.8.8 but only as a base edit - no liteloader yet. It doesn't seem like the list for 1.8.8 has been set up, though. (There are a few forge mods for 1.8.8 too).
Hey! anybody knows about a 1.8.9 list? that would be great
MCP and forge aren't out for 1.8.9 yet, so there aren't very many mods. 1.8.8 mods should be completely compatible with 1.8.9 servers, and you won't really lose anything by not using 1.8.9, though - the only changes were trapped chest rendering during Christmas season (that's over, so it doesn't matter right now) and some realms stuff (mods don't mix well with realms). And apparently a water exit side thing (OK, I didn't realize that was fixed and I'm kinda happy about it).
That said, I have updated the World Downloader mod to 1.8.9 (just an hour ago or so), and I think optifine for 1.8.8 also works with 1.8.9. In fact, I think many mods will be 1.8.8/1.8.9 compatible as 1.8.9 changed so few things, but obviously if you're installing it on the wrong version you're going to have to deal with any crashes you encounter.
The only bug that matters in that version was MC-42150, where trapped chests wouldn't get retextured on christmas while normal ones would. That bug's irrelevant now - it only matters on a few days of the year and in other cases doesn't effect anyone. There were also some realms changes, but realms is not usable with mods, so that doesn't matter.
The wiki incorrectly claims that MC-2324 was fixed in 1.8.9. This isn't true - half of the bug is still present in 1.8.9 just as it is in 1.8.8 (and 1.8) and the other half of the bug is fixed by 1.8.
For modded users, 1.8.8 is the same as 1.8.9. It's still a huge step up from 1.8.0, though, so 1.8.8 is preferable to 1.8.0.

MCP (the decompilation tool) and Minecraft Forge aren't updated to 1.9 yet. They're working on it, but as of right now only 1.8.9 is available.
However, the thread will be updated to 1.9 (the title will be changed, at least) when it's available. That's what's been done in the past.
The Minecraft Forge people are delaying because there 'might be a snapshot that changes something'. Imo all links in the chain of people, from mojave, to mod tools, to mods add unnecessary dawdling and pointing the finger at others to justify delaying. It's not a healthy situation imo.

Look, I'm involved in the updating process (not for forge, but for a bunch of other tools, including the wiki.vg protocol doc and other things). It's complicated. The forge team is working, as is the MCP team - MCP has some trial mappings on their export site, Forge is trying to set up patches, and we've got some level of pre-release protocol. They are not delaying; they're working pretty hard on it (and most likely even if there is a second release they'll stick with the earliest version, or else they'll update if it isn't too hard).
It's nigh impossible to update mods without MCP. I've been working on a tool that does some basic extraction of protocol doc (though unless you work with custom clients it's not too important), and that's mostly workable with snapshots. But anything involving the base game is impossible more or less since you need to work with the obfuscated Minecraft code, which I might add is all in the default package meaning it's hard to work with even if you're willing to guess names, and you can't work with the snapshots since the obfuscation is likely to shift in the next version.

What gives you the authority to say that? What do you know about the process of updating Forge and mods?

1.8.9 doesn't have any advantages over 1.8.8 also most servers these days can run all 1.8 versions and some fancy servers can run 1.7 too
