Sorry on the delay in responding to this Mechanos. I was hell-bet on getting the Block Dispensers up and running last night :smile.gif:

Fair enough, I'll withdraw my opinions on it 'till I see it in action.
I'd be interested in hearing what you have to say about the couple of vids I posted last night. My sense so far is that they aren't breaking the feel of the game at all and are opening up a whole realm of possibilities for player created gizmos.
Quote from Mechanos »
Yes.. but soul sand is already something in-game, and it already has slowing properties for whatever reason. I guess my use of the word "magical" was a poor choice lol. The fact that you put a much needed function into the game, using logic already in-game, makes it fit well.
My feeling is that the block dispensers represent some much needed functionality as well. Whether it be through trap-doors, or pistons, or what have you, I think a device that adds/removes a block or change its position is something practically every minecraft player has wanted at some point. Fluid control is one big example of why players want this and people have gone through extraordinary lengths to find and exploit bugs in the code to be able to do just that. Making traps that actually do something (like drop a mob or player into a pit when triggered) are another area where this feels entirely natural.
I also have the feeling that this kind of feature provides a wide range of emergent gameplay possibilities. I can't even begin to come up with all the uses that folks will find for the block dispensers, especially with the self-modifying circuit element that I stumbled upon while putting this thing together.
Quote from Mechanos »
That's actually a really neat backstory. And since mossy is only found in those rare dungeons, it's also very balancing. You're good..
Glad you like it :smile.gif:
Yeah, as I've stated before, I consider all of these to be "high level" devices, and I want legit players to have to work for them. One of the things I really loved about minecraft when I started was how the more I played it, the more the world opened up to me and how I felt my character was going through a process of technological development as I discovered new resources and learned how to use different aspects of the game.
I'd love for this mod to enhance that process rather than break it by giving the player early "easy" solutions to their problems.
Quote from Mechanos »
This is precisely the point of my comparison to E2 in Garrysmod (I dunno if you've played the game or not)
I am ashamed to admit that I have never played Gary's Mod. I've eyed in longingly on Steam on several occasions however, so I do know what it's about :smile.gif:
Quote from Mechanos »
Meaning servers can have plain old "stock" gmod, or they can have their extended toys along with E2. Most go the Wire route, and it's effectively changed the history of the game.
Oi. Yeah, that sounds absolutely horrible, and I can definitely see what you're saying with all this.
Look, let's put it this way. I'd NEVER include automatic resource-mining and collection gear into this mod. I think my general policy is: if you want to do something cool, you're going to have to work for it.
Harvesting and replacing a single block is one of the most basic tasks in minecraft. You can do it quickly and very easily, almost from the start of the game. To my mind, setting up a circuit to do this (never mind finding the mossy cobble to build this thing), is actually far more work than just doing it yourself (which means this equipment is useless for mining...with the possible exception of obsidian...which I think is fine). The only thing it really automates is your ability to place/remove a single block *in the same spot* over and over again, which is something no player is likely to be doing very often, and which is definitely not part of people's enjoyment of the game.
So, in terms of taking out the whole reason behind a certain subset of the player's in-game actions, I don't think we have anything to worry about with the block dispensers.
Quote from Mechanos »
This is what I fear may happen with your mod, if you automate too many of the tasks you'd normally have to manually do. Albeit by a much lesser extent. I'm sure I overreacted now keke (we're talking about just a simple block dispenser thingy right now). I'm looking too far into the future.
Not at all man. I've passed up downloading many mods because I've seen something that just didn't "feel right" in them. I knew that if I used them in my main game, it would feel like I was cheating as opposed to just using something that felt natural within the "world of minecraft".
If you're enjoying this mod because it feels natural to you, I can see why you'd be worried that I might take it in a direction that would effectively ruin that for you :smile.gif:
Quote from Mechanos »
That seriously is awesome. IMO there's a lot of players out there missing out by simply taking the easy button approach. And the amount of easy button mods on this forum, or complete game changing mods.. craziness!
Yeah, agreed. But what can you do? People will play the game as they desire, and we know that players enjoy minecraft for a wide range of reasons. Like, I don't at all frown upon people that just love building epic structures eventually using invEdit or what have you. Their enjoyment of the game is largely artistic, so why not?
But it appears that you and I are of like mind in enjoying the whole process and taking a sense of accomplishment from adhering to it :smile.gif:

Also, I noticed the above posts discussing slimes... I LITERALLY just found my first Slime ever, less than an hour ago. I only play on hard difficulty, have many game worlds, and have started 3 in just the last couple weeks.. And I've been playing minecraft since just before alpha. But this is the first slime I've ever come acrossed, so I guess for some people they are pretty rare.
Wow. I think I heard mention somewhere that their spawning is region specific, so if you found one, you can probably go back to the same place and find another.
That huge tower off to the right of the screen-shot I posted yesterday is actually a full-height mob-trap that goes down to bedrock level (and yes, all legit...I went nuts building that *&^$*! thing :smile.gif: ), and I focus a lot of building around that area as I'm slowly lighting it all up (hence the torches everywhere on the ground) and exploring every single cave in the spawning area of the trap, so that all mob spawns go straight into the trap.
I'm realizing that the sad part about that is that I seem to have built the whole thing on a slime spawning ground, and since slimes can spawn regardless of whether an area is lit, I think it may be draining off the effectiveness of my trap. What sucks even more, is I started building there when the slimes were bugged and not spawning at all, so I never had any idea that they were suddenly going to start popping into existence en masse there.
So you may be happy to have found a slime spawn, while I detest the infestation I have in my trap area :wink.gif:
great mod. I mostly play SMP and havent installed a mod yet, so it will take me some time to get this running, but this, controllerblock, piston mod, finite liquid, and the allocator are basically everything notch needs to add to this game. The possibilities for creativity got a fat exponent when redstone got added, if it were to be expanded with some of these mods then the creations could be endless.
I love the name of this mod and I love your avatar. When 1.4 rolled around, my SMP server went down, and half of the mods they are running like craftbook still don't work completely so I am STILL waiting for some of that stuff to work again so I can continue making machines.
When I looked online to see what got added to the game in 1.4, I was livid. Wolves? and COOKIES!?!? My completely automatic redstone security system is broken for weeks because of COOKIES AND WOLVES? Now, reading some of Notch's tweets, and that we will not be getting any of these cool mods implemented in 1.5 either, I don't know what to say...
Great mod, the name is awesome and so is your avatar. Keep it up!
The one and only new feature in this release is the block dispensers, which I view as being such a huge feature that I think they're worthy of their own release :smile.gif:
See the updated OP for how they work and are crafted.
Hope you guys enjoy it! Let me know what you think!

Block dispenser, me like. Its a bit like pistons only without the push.
Gives me an easy minecart dispenser for my minecart station. I'm twisting myself into all kind of knots to build a workable dispenser. I can't seem to stack minecarts. (probably some mod I have installed broke it xD)
It will indeed do that along with a whole other whack of cool stuff :smile.gif:

Dude, that is seriously awesome! Honestly, I was kind of nervous about what your response to these would be once you saw them in game and worried that I may have gone overboard with this most recent feature due to being so enamored with the functionality it provides.
So happy to hear that you dig it! I know how concerned you are with these issues, and if you're down with it, I think it acts as an excellent litimus test for this feature :smile.gif:
In my opinion i dont think this is better then wolves 1/10.
So sad. My ego is shattered by your arbitrary numerical rating.
I find it more than a little telling that the video featured on your youtube page has you flying around in a bi-plane with your wolf. Hmmmm...I wonder what motivated your rage-rating of this mod?
Also, maybe adding the previously mentioned 'descriptive' part to the title would help with fending some of the trolls off and keep a tidier thread for mod discussion. Just a thought.

Thank you sir! I very much appreciate those of you that pop in here to voice your support for the mod :smile.gif:
I actually already tried editing the title to add a descriptive part, but couldn't fit in anything reasonable given the length limit.
Given then that I only have a choice between a descriptive title, and the one I have now, I'll stick with this one :wink.gif:
1. Even though I do like the wolves, I find this mod's title amusing and your reasons for using it very sound.
2. Couple ideas: it's probably done already in another mod, but still...gate blocks. Those would basically just be half a door, though perhaps vertical bars would help give it a "gate" feel. I'd also kinda like to see a half-block of netherrack, though I'm not sure that's possible to implement and still have it on fire.
Also, would be kinda cool to be able to make cement that turns into cobblestone, for easier laying of roads.
Last idea: a fuse to use with tnt. Something like combining string and gunpowder, you'd lay it down like redstone and light it. It burns down and....kaboom. Based on my own experience, I think that'd be a lot more flexible to work with than using redstone for remote detonation. Brings new ideas for traps, as well.

I actually have fence gates in the intended feature list, so this isn't too much of a stretch :smile.gif:

As I mention in the OP, I'm staying away from aesthetic mods as much as possible so that I can focus on functionality. I originally had an idea for adding dyes to cement as well, but decided to drop it because of this.

I'm not sure i understand how it would be more flexible than redstone. Can you explain?
I'm very happy that this has modloader support now. I like the name and the goals of this project; this definitely has my support.
However, there is a considerable degree of overlap between this mod and several other mods: there are already powered light blocks, photovoltaic blocks, and Convenient Inventory does much more than simply add a craft all key. This is not meant as a criticism, but I'm thinking, why not make a modpack? I mean, instead of spending time and effort creating stuff which has been done, cooperate with other modders to compile a package of mods. Maybe it's just simpler and even easier to make everything yourself right now, but there are many 'small' mods which very much align with the goals of this project, such as Convenient Inventory and doomspork's Autorun mod, and I think it would be cool to have it all in one place. Just a thought. At the least, I hope any future craft all feature would not conflict with Convenient Inventory.
Great mod! I'd be happy to make unique block images for you, if you'd rather have that instead of re-using textures in the game. Just pm me! :smile.gif:
I remember reading your thread about the wolves back when you first wrote it, and I agreed with a lot of what you were saying. After playing with the wolves for a few days when they came out, now I don't even bother looking for them or wanting one following me around. Feels like a waste of an addition. Then today I stumble across this mod thread and WOW! You got some really great things going on in here. Good job.
I did something very interesting last night. For the first time since I started this mod project, I decided to just *play* minecraft. I also took a huge step as I converted my main save over to using this mod. Previously it was pure vanilla, and it's the only world I've really played in since I started. As such, it's pretty damn huge in its scope, and I am obviously quite attached to it.
This may not sound like a big deal to many, but I just wanted to mention it as I think it represents my commitment to maintaining this mod (I can no longer play my main save without updating it), and to using these features myself and making sure that they are properly balanced.
I will say that I *really* enjoyed the experience. Having all these items at my disposal immediately sparked my imagination towards a whole range of new in-game building projects, which I didn't even manage to make a small dent in over several hours of play. Anyways, good times :smile.gif:

A valid point. With the light block though, keep in mind that previous to this mod, I had never done minecraft modding or programmed in java (I have extensive C++ experience though, so java wasn't that hard to pick up). I chose the light block as my first feature to implement both because it was missing from the main game, and because it was a very simple first project.
You'll notice since then that the features have become progressively more complicated and "richer", and as we progress further into the mod, I think we'll be seeing less overlap with other mods.
With the light-sensor, I don't really have much choice other than to code my own because my version needs to function with the focused redstone torches on the intended features list. As such, I couldn't use someone else's photo-sensor without extensively modifying their code anyways.
As for the craft-all key, I think you're right and I'm going to drop it from the feature list. If I start moifying those client files just for this one little feature, I suspect that it will make the mod incompatible with a ton of others with minimal benefit. So thanks man, I agree with you there :smile.gif:

Looking forward to the future of this mod =)
Me too :smile.gif:

- fun
- showing it can be done in with very little effort
- no compatibility issues
I would also like to add:
-ability to balance objects relative to each other and create crafting recipes that compliment each other.
-ease of updating when new versions of the game are released
-one central download for "features that are missing from minecraft that don't go overboard and completely blow the balance of the game" :smile.gif:
With the last one, I think it will take time to gain the community's trust in that regard, but that eventually, otherwise vanilla players (like me) will view this as the "safe" mod to download and enjoy, knowing that I won't be putting in guns, helicopters, or anything else that completely changes the feel of the game.

But despite that - these mods aren't THAT bad where you need to capslock and curse. Don't dig on it's potential to become 'better', tis not the mods fault that the creators erm...well just scroll back a few page and read the insults lol.. enough said.
If anything, he's inspiring people to learn to mod despite updates that aren't to ones fancy.
What the **** ?! You don't like where Minecraft is going ?! So what ? You want 100 more rail types and cement ?! Minecraft is about having fun,not building train stations, and wolves are exactly what minecraft is ! FUN ! You take stuff to seriouslly.
a) This mod isn't about 100 more rail types. It's about lacking core features that can be implemented with a minimum of effort to open up functionality that players have been craving.
:cool.gif: Building train stations IS fun for a lot of us.
c) Wolves are stupid and fall off cliffs. They're not about fun, at least not the way they are now. The most entertainment I've managed to extract from them came from hitting them with a shovel.

Minecraft is about having fun in your own way so if you have fun building train stations then so be it its your world so you do what you find is fun.
Agreed, and I think the most entertainment comes from features that open up the player's own creativity, and let them discover their own way of having fun.
Bukkit this and I will, honestly give you money, these mods are so epic. XD
Hehe...fair enough. Can I ask you what the advantages are to Bukkit?

Although, the minecart pressure plate is about to become redundant, unless the minecart doesn't stop on the one Notch is going to add in 1.5, which makes it kinda pointless.
I'm actually not certain if minecart detectors (or rail detectors as they are being called) are going to make it into 1.5.
The only reference Mojang has made to them is one tweet by Jeb where he mentions them in an art-file, and honestly, the post looks to me like it might be referring to the boosters.
I'll be more than happy if they make it into the release though. The more of these kinds of features there are in the official game, the happier I will be :smile.gif:
Anyways, as more of these features make it into the game, I'll make sure to properly phase them out of the mod. You can see in my intended features list for the next release that I've already made plans to return the resources used in construction of the boosters when they are destroyed so that players don't end up wasting their hard-earned stuff by using them now.
Your problem is that you assume to much, but I haven't bothered to correct you because it's funny watching you squirm around quoting people with butt-tight responses lol.
1- Yes there is, and you don't seem to know it.
2- The "Mod list" thread has nothing to do with this one. And can you tell me where else I should put it? I figured alot of people would appreciate having a mod list specifically for wolf textures and mods. I don't think you bothered looking at it hard enough before getting butt-hurt about it for some reason. Sorry if it is in the wrong section though either way. I'm actually testing wolf mods currently specifically for that thread if you must know.
kinda sad you can't even stay on topic in your own thread though, no wonder it's a mess.
3 - The fact I said your mods are great numerous of times but not good enough to be called "better than anything" - I just loved your childish response to that and gave up trying to defend both sides of the matter. You've been skipping over any compliments I've made, so I certainly don't regret my RE:

Minecraft technology - the logical way - the only way.
Based off an illustration by Blonz.
Thanks man :smile.gif:
I actually have fence gates in the intended feature list, so this isn't too much of a stretch :smile.gif:
As I mention in the OP, I'm staying away from aesthetic mods as much as possible so that I can focus on functionality. I originally had an idea for adding dyes to cement as well, but decided to drop it because of this.
I'm not sure i understand how it would be more flexible than redstone. Can you explain?
Looking forward to the future of this mod =)
This may not sound like a big deal to many, but I just wanted to mention it as I think it represents my commitment to maintaining this mod (I can no longer play my main save without updating it), and to using these features myself and making sure that they are properly balanced.
I will say that I *really* enjoyed the experience. Having all these items at my disposal immediately sparked my imagination towards a whole range of new in-game building projects, which I didn't even manage to make a small dent in over several hours of play. Anyways, good times :smile.gif:
Thank you sir!
Me too :smile.gif:
I would also like to add:
-ability to balance objects relative to each other and create crafting recipes that compliment each other.
-ease of updating when new versions of the game are released
-one central download for "features that are missing from minecraft that don't go overboard and completely blow the balance of the game" :smile.gif:
With the last one, I think it will take time to gain the community's trust in that regard, but that eventually, otherwise vanilla players (like me) will view this as the "safe" mod to download and enjoy, knowing that I won't be putting in guns, helicopters, or anything else that completely changes the feel of the game.
Hehe...yeah, I saw that yesterday. I guess he gave up on trying to troll this thread and created his own. More power to him (although I personally don't think his topic belongs in the released mods forum...as he hasn't created squat) :wink.gif:
Thanks man! Hope that these features prove to be "better than wolves" for you :smile.gif:
Great update Hadley! Thanks for putting that together!
Ok guys, I need to get some work done and bring home the bacon today, so please forgive me if I'm a little slower than usual in responding on this thread :smile.gif:
he'll report you for trolling cuz he can't take criticism
But despite that - these mods aren't THAT bad where you need to capslock and curse. Don't dig on it's potential to become 'better', tis not the mods fault that the creators erm...well just scroll back a few page and read the insults lol.. enough said.
If anything, he's inspiring people to learn to mod despite updates that aren't to ones fancy.
a) This mod isn't about 100 more rail types. It's about lacking core features that can be implemented with a minimum of effort to open up functionality that players have been craving.
:cool.gif: Building train stations IS fun for a lot of us.
c) Wolves are stupid and fall off cliffs. They're not about fun, at least not the way they are now. The most entertainment I've managed to extract from them came from hitting them with a shovel.
a) There's a huge difference between trolling and constructive criticism.
:cool.gif: I wasn't the one that reported you in this thread. Although I did report your other thread for being in the wrong section...which it is. You haven't created anything at all and are posting in the released mods section.
c) If you had made a single point of valid criticism at any point in this thread I would have responded to it in a reasonable manner. Instead, you've been trolling.
I've only fired when fired upon man. And frankly, you're an easy target.
Agreed, and I think the most entertainment comes from features that open up the player's own creativity, and let them discover their own way of having fun.
Hehe...fair enough. Can I ask you what the advantages are to Bukkit?
So you're calling the mod "useless" was constructive criticism? Uh huh.
LOL @ "nothing to do with this one". You obviously chose to name it in direct response to this one mate, and changed your banner as a poke at this mod. That's plain as day. You even got complemented on it by another user in your thread.
I'd say the general mod forum is the place for your list if there's no room left beneath the rock you crawled out from under.
If it's a "mess" it's because trolls like you keep popping in here and taking the discussion off topic.
You are however providing a useful service to the mod in ensuring it's continually bumped, so I've got no complaints.
Ummm...dude, you kept saying the mod was useless, and got warned for flaming by a moderator as a result. Are you actually believing the things you say? Because if so, this is getting fairly delusional.
