Was looking at trying this out but one of my 'must have mods' needs lava to work. If I understand ya buckets right, the player can no longer get a bucket of lava thus making it impossible for me to use the other mod. If I am wrong about this, let me know and I will give it a try.
Yeah pretty much. Lava can no longer be carried around in buckets. This mod doesn't play nice with others though, and I'm pretty sure there are precious few that are compatible with it anyway...tends to break the balance see.
Apparently, there is a continuation of this mod called Better With Mods.
It's not a continuation. The original author is still working on Better than Wolves. His philosophy is "Game Balance" and "Improved Features", and so tries hard to keep the BTW experience consistent. Mods like that and the Tweaks one are just those who disregard that philosophy and would rather play something haphazardly put together (not to mention without permission).
Don't get me wrong, people can choose to play how they like. But if you want the genuine BTW experience that's balanced and challenging, get BTW. If you're dissatisfied with that, go give the others a go - just know that while they're using features and mechanics from BTW, it's implemented in a way that will most likely be imbalanced and far from the vision FC had for the game.
The current launcher has the capacity to utilize multiple .JARs afaik, some of us like to keep a 1.5.2 version handy. Personally I only use it for BTW, that's just how much I enjoy it.
For those of you who use Derivation as a texture pack, here is the re-upload of the "Timed Rat" edition of the BTW support textures. Credits go to the original author of both the texture pack, and the guy who started the support textures. I have only added new textures it was stopped being updated a couple years ago.
Hope you guys find this useful.
It's such a shame a lot of the better tex-packs out there don't have support for BTW - and I'm glad you took your time to make this one do so. I'm not one for virtual diamonds, but hell, have my thanks.
I just realized there was an update yesterday while checking for new posts.
I was having trouble with the install using the instructions(both in the readme.txt, and in the Sargunster forums) with the new MC launcher as of 4-20-2017.
I managed to get it working. Assuming a fresh install, Here was my process.
Preparation:
1) Download Latest BTW version (4a2b "Timing Rodent" as of this post)
2) Download New launcher
(optional) Download CraftGuide 1.6.7.3-noloader (for MC version 1.5.2)
Setup:
1) Open New Launcher
a. Select "Launch Options" from the menu
b. Click "( + ) Add new"
c. Change Name to "BTW 4a2b" and select game version "release 1.5.2"
d. (optional) Set default Resolution, and change Game directory to Save this profile separate from .minecraft install
e. Select and Run new profile once to download required files.
f. Verify the message "Notice! Minecraft 1.6 is available for manual download...." and Quit Game
2) Manual Setup
a. Navigate to your .minecraft/versions folder. (Typically in %appdata% on Windows PCs)
b. Rename 1.5.2 to "BTW 4a2b" and open folder.
c. Rename 1.5.2.json to "BTW 4a2b.json, and Edit file
I. after the first curly bracket {, delete till you see "id": "1.5.2"
(this is so the new launcher doesn't overwrite your modified files, including this file)
II. change the line to "id": "BTW 4a2b"
III. (optional) change the line "type": "release" near the end of the file, to "type": "BTW"
IV. Save and close
d. Rename 1.5.2.jar to "BTW 4a2b.jar"
3) Normal Manual Install
a. Open "BTW 4a2b.jar" with your favorite archive manager (I use WinRAR)
b. Delete the "META-INF" folder
c. (optional) Unzip the contents of CraftGuide.zip into the jar file, overwriting when prompted
d. (required) Unzip the "MINECRAFT-JAR" folder from the BTWMod4.zip download, into the jar file, overwriting when prompted
4) Reconfigure Launch Options
a. Reopen Minecraft Launcher, and navigate to "Launch Options" again.
b. Change the game Version of your BTW profile to the newly created version "BTW BTW 4a2b"
5) Enjoy!
a. Now when you open the game, the "Notice! Minecraft 1.6 is available for manual download...." should be gone.
b. When you open a new world, The "Timing Rodent b" version should be displayed.

I use a mix of Dokucraft The Saga Continues and JohnSmith, and create personalized textures for both. Some of my submissions can be found in the Dokucraft Customizer located http://www.minecraft...saga-continues/
How did you get that to work? In my experience, also following both your instructions and the install guide exactly, the new minecraft launcher flat-out refuses to recognize custom versions. Period. They don't even show up.

At this point I'd recommend checking out the BTW forums for the most up to date install directions from the community (in the tech support section), as the vanilla launcher keeps changing between versions of the mod.
Without the forced hardcore modes that drove most players away from it I would agree.
IMO, not really. These days all mods are like libraries with sets of functions applied on MC and their effect is undefined and depends on billions of config options as parameters. Beside the obvious overhead forced on the programmers by this, it means that those who actually define the game (and whether it will be fun or not) are people who sets those parameters. Nowadays it's mainly modpack authors.
It's a bit weird to say but I think in modern-MC-modding language, BTW is not a mod, but a modpack using only custom in-house mods. And a very well designed one. Too much configuration for the end users would both add more work programming/testing-side (which translates to less work elsewhere) and allow them to saw off the branch they are sitting on.
But I guess all of this is just always repeated over the years and the world will always be divided between those who think they know what they like and those who think some are more talented to find what is needed. It's an eternal debate.
Without the forced hardcore modes that drove most players away from it I would agree. Minecraft is just so much more "better with mods"
TLDR; Minecraft is better with BTW, than it is with mods.
I only play BTW minecraft anymore. Even the 1.6 version makes me angry. Mojang has filled the game out in way of features, in lieu of gameplay. What BTW does, is hone those features(and extend them), to make dynamic, emergent, and interesting gameplay.
In other words, when I play modern minecraft, there's a ton of stuff to look at, and there's a lot of things I can build/craft, but nothing interesting to do. I end up playing survival mode like it's creative mode, and creative mode like it's god mode. When I play BTW, the emergent gameplay is the only thing in your mind.
Can I get enough wood and food to make it thru the night? I'm running low on torches, I should stop exploring this mine. You build huge "machines" to make your work easier, instead of just because they're cool. You go through hell, quite literally, to find villagers, and it feels like a huge achievement when you do.
Here's the typical progression path in vanilla MC:
Spawn > Wood Pick > Stone Pick > Iron Pick > Diamond Sword > Kill all bosses > Done
Here's the typical progression path in BTW:
Spawn > Get Food so you don't die > Wood Pick > Stone Pick > Tree Farm > Chicken Farm > Cloth Armor > Seed Farm > Iron Pick > Leather Armor > Mechanical Power > Bad Automation > Nether exploring > General Automation > Diamond Pick > Iron Armor > Travel Thru the Nether! >Die...
Start all over. Maybe find your original base, but not for awhile, need to get some food so you don't die.

I've been playing some Forge minecraft with friends (since they won't play BTW with me), and while it's infinitely more interesting than vanilla minecraft, i simply don't see any mod working well with BTW, nor do i see any mod reaching this level of quality.
Virtually every other main mod in virtually every modpack does what BTW does in simpler and easier ways. mods with electricity and item and liquid pipes are ubiquitous. But none of them do it with a feel for what minecraft is, with multiblock construction and proper mobtraps. Putting BTW in those mods will just make 90% of the mod obsolete and the other 10% a mere curiosity. Especially since most people tend to pick the easiest version of something in the modpack. Nobody's gonna use soulforged steel if you can just get powered armor with some coal, iron and obsidian. Yet those are the people that miss the point of this mod.
I've yet to see a mod that reaches BTW's level in progression, in integration and in terms of a total picture. Seems to me most mods are nowadays designed for a niche in a modpack, hoping that nobody's overriding their features with easier ones.

I think you're bang on with that. I've thought about it in similar ways in the past where modern game design within mods seems to be left to modpack creators, where mods themselves are largely about the raw feature set which is used to create those designs.
Since I'm interested in both design and programming, it has resulted in BTW occupying a strange (strange for modern modding anyways) middle ground between mod and modpack.
For those that use the Derivation texture pack, I've updated it to the newest BTW version and included a bunch of CTM and CIT stuff. This continues on from what Levaunt and Kezza have already done though I've cleaned a few things.
Man, I'm really struggling to install this mod. I spent the last hour futilely following the readme and wiki to the very word, and still no custom version shows up at the end. Even Priox's instructions on the previous page of this thread didn't work. Anyone know what's up?

I have noticed that this is not Mod Loader compatible, but I must as something. I this going to cause problems with mods that require a mod loader?
It's not Modloader compatible, and it is not intended to be used with other mods.
