It's not that my vanilla loving brain can't comprehend any complex mechanisms that I expect to find in this mod, it just doesn't seem like it fits into vanilla as the topic creator claims (and fits even more so than the latest additions, apparently). By vanilla style, I didn't mean easy, I meant that I was hoping it would have general features that would fit into Minecraft, but it seems to be another industrial mod. Just my opinion, you don't have to think the same way, but I don't think that makes my opinion any less valid.
While it's true BTW does focus a bit on mechanical power and 'industry', the way I see it is this.
In vanilla minecraft, people make all sorts of farms by using or abusing various functions and bugs of the game(one good example would be the nether-roof gold farms). A lot of these(like iron farms) could be seen as exploits, or abusing the functions of the game(like making endermen farms in the end by removing all spawnable areas except the in the farm)
BTW simply turns these into a feature of the game rather then 'exploits' and gives you a 'simpler' way of doing it.
I think this is the most relevant point here. The OP *is* horribly out of date and doesn't at all represent what the mod is like in its current incarnation.
Nothing more really needs to be said beyond that point. Guy read the OP, didn't like what he saw...oh well. Only one to blame for that is me for having let it get so far out of date
Thanks for trying to settle the debate. Maybe I'm not completely right in what I'm saying, but I think I'm being misunderstood a little. I just want everybody to understand (I could probably use this lesson too) that we all have different opinions on the direction of the game. Mojang aren't going to be able to please everybody, so maybe saying that our hopes are being crushed like moles in wack-a-mole isn't such an accurate representation of the game's state for everybody, and maybe not everybody thinks that this mod doesn't fit into vanilla. And maybe I'm not fully equipped to talk about what this mod has to offer, but I think some people here are getting a bit rude now, and if you don't like what I have said, fair enough. I don't think I've been totally right this whole time, but I don't think that I should be expected to not make a judgement on a mod before I play it. You shouldn't totally judge a book by it's cover, but you can use said cover to determine whether it's going to be of interest, and if the cover is an inaccurate representation of what that book has to offer, you can't be blamed for believing that the book isn't going to live up to what you had been told.
Anyway, I might try to find some time to play this. I'm not going to sit here and argue with anybody over whether the mod fits into vanilla or not, if I'm equipped to even be making that judgement, nor if I should even be telling you those opinions. So I'll end this with a smiley face and hope we can all just drop the subject.
(And if that smiley face didn't convince you that we shouldn't continue with this discussion, then I have no faith left in humanity)

Gamelord, the primary issue I believe is that based on your comments you seem to think we mind one way or another whether you play this mod or not. This mod was primarily made by FlowerChild for his own benefit in enjoying minecraft and like minded people who happen to enjoy the same kind of gameplay. The goal is not popularity so much as a sense of fully integrated gameplay and polish. The primary inspiration for Better Than Wolves has I believe been to live up to the potential of the early days of Minecraft Alpha before beds and charcoal were mainstays of the game. Overall concepts hinted at in alpha but never fully fleshed out were given a polish and deeper purpose in the overall tech tree beyond 10 minutes to diamond. For several updates, a lot of newer items have been added in here and there, but there's been very little purpose for most of them besides "hey check out this new shiny that does things". Vanilla doesn't have much of a challenge or a tech tree to it, and many features appear to have been added 'just because' without any real underlying meaning to them. This is the gist of the criticism it's been getting from what I see. Maybe if there's some underlying pattern you see in the features that truly adds meaningful gameplay you could share it with us?
Isn't it a bit silly to assume that I won't know the content of a mod before I play it?
No. The only thing silly here is assuming you're some kind of authority on a mod you've never tried. Feeling the need to post in a mod's thread to let everyone know you haven't played the mod is also pretty silly. This isn't something normal people do.
(And if that smiley face didn't convince you that we shouldn't continue with this discussion, then I have no faith left in humanity)
The internet is the wrong place to put your faith in humanity at.
All your faith for/against humanity should be left in real(non-digital) life.
That said, either I'm still doing this wrong, or I just really suck. Yet again was slaughtered, and lost my iron pick. Coincidentally, it happened to have been made from all the exposed iron I could find in the area.
Oh well, I don't live there anymore. Better greet the animals before they turn into monster chow.
Well either you suck and do it wrong as a result, or you doing it wrong results in sucking
If you could give us a little more info on whats getting you repeatedly killed; we might know a trick or two to keep you alive for the next time.
(though its worth noting; keep your pick safe (in a chest) until you've secured the area- then extract iron).

I used to fall into the overconfidence trap a lot, normally right after getting that first pick. Its still best to advance slowly, and keep materials on your hotbar to block off monsters. Theres no such thing as fighting dirty, so if you need to fight; fight dirty. Get yourself a terrain advantage. Build a shield. Back out and try later.
As simple as it sounds, why not go hunting and find more food before you run out? The iron will stay there until later. (it also provides a nice break from being underground, and as you explore more of the world- you might stumble upon an older base).
-Worth noting pumpkins themselves are near useless, but with a few chickens you can make ham & eggs early on. If you're eating every few minutes try sprinting/jumping less.
If you get caught short, find/build shelter. Its somewhat safer than the mad dash home.

Mostly going slightly deeper to mine after I mine out all iron in easy reach, then getting ninjaed by skeletons. Oh, and falling creepers.
Other times, I just starve because I couldn't find enough iron to mine before I ran out of food.
And I sometimes get overexcited and forget to go home at night, or go just slightly too deep.
Edit: Also I sometimes take a long break, then forget a good 1/4th of the survival tips and tricks until I mess up.
Or simply forget to look at tool durability.
Falling creeper? Don't walk anywhere that could have a jumping spot from above.
Keep building material like dirt to block up areas in caves that could bring in unwanted guests.
Be smarter than the skeleton, use line of sight to bring it in close, use blocks to stop it from shooting you.
If you get low on food, go on hunting trips, you don't need to return home at the end of the day, you just need to create a safe area that you can work in during the night and exit safely.
I find long hunting trips to be especially beneficial for leaving markers to find your way back home to help with future deaths.
Honestly it's just playing it that will help with survival. Each death you can reflect as to what killed you and change your play-style to compensate
Started a new world, and I think I got off to a ok start. Saw some exposed coal and iron while slaughtering animals, and buried a chicken alive. Hope it stays alive long enough for me to find some pumpkins. Only time will tell though. I am slowly getting better(being really unfocused probably doesn't help me. I randomly tend to go off to play different games for extended periods of time), so I hope to at least try surviving long enough to make a farm or something.
Main problem is, when I get ninjaed by skeletons or creepers, I tend to panic, run around, jump across ditches to ditch them, and try to charge it before I die. I really should stop panicking but it's hard...

They're surprising you.
If this happens in the surface: pick a direction and run. Having some paths here and there help due to the hardcore movement.
If this happens while mining: block certain paths in the caves with dirt, so mobs don't surprise you.
Hehe..no, I'm both older and balder than any of those guys. I keep getting told I look like this dude
Whoever he is
For some reason, this reminded me of my 6th grade history teacher, and someone I knew from boyscouting. But they are both totally different people. Weird
On a totally unrelated note, I realized that a abandoned library on top of a hill isn't the best hideout you can get, mainly due to all the hunger you lose climbing up the hill. Also, it tends to be devoid of trees. Well, at least there are plenty of houses I can knock down for wood. Plus, I got a free crafting table. At least, I'm pretty sure I did. I might have placed it and forgot.

Awsome mod!
So... which one of those guys is FlowerChild? (at work, trying to watch bits and pieces here and there with the volume down low)

I wasn't there unfortunately. Only attended via stream chat at one point
My guess was the long hair dude wearing the 'stache. Guess not...

We're in the same small wooden boat... I too am older, and am balding. I keep getting told I look like this dude... but thinkin' you have me beat:

I dunno man...The Penguin vs Heisenburg would likely be fairly epic
