I just read the first two pages of your epic, and with the tiny bit of modding knowledge i have: I know it's a big pain in the ass.
I never expected the update to be done in a day, but this sounds like you'll need more than a week(of actual work) and at least 1 buggy release to get stuff straight.
i wish more people would respect the kind of work it requires.
-snip-
As a PvP kinda guy, I'm sure I'd appreciate your input in the coming weeks and months.
Yeah, dunno why I didn't join the forums earlier. I guess that was when Tekkit was first out and all the trolls were hanging around. As soon as I'm on and it's up I'll join the forums. I have to work on traps now, since I'm so pysched.
Also, while lenses are useful, have you considered another use for diamond? I already use all my gold in redstone synthesizement, but I stockpile diamond rather quickly if I have access to soulforged steel. I have no idea what I can use it for, since I have jukeboxes, have enchanters, have an infernal enchanter, and have soulforged armour/tools. The crucible makes diamonds useless, since I can re-use the same pickaxe over and over. Just something that is handy to have. Maybe a crossbow with diamond bolts? XD
Oh, I just had an idea. Crush it in a millstone, and fire it off in a dispenser and it blinds people and mobs. Just anything that gives them a use once you have a ready source of steel.

I'd like to say that there won't be a buggy release, because FlowerChild just doesn't /do/ that. But he's already admitted this update may be larger than one man can reasonably test by himself, so we'll see what happens.

The millstone is mainly meant for organic components, so crushing diamond in it isn't likely to happen. Though, unless you've got your automations set up very effectively in your world already, I've found with the special properties added to soulforged steel armor recently, as well as the difficulty in obtaining arcane scrolls due to their drop rate, that diamond equipment is becoming desirable again in certain situations. Sometimes I don't want to sink to the bottom of the ocean, you know?

That's actually the effect I was aiming for with some of the more recent changes to Soulforged equipment. It was my desire to get away from the "good/better/best" kinda thing that happens with MC equipment and inspire a little more thought in players as to what they're using at any particular time.
SFS is great if you're going into battle, but I doubt anyone ever really wanted to wear full plate while lounging around the house or when going on a boat ride
With the increased rate of food consumption while wearing it, and the sinking effect, there are definitely times when I'm not wearing it either.

Just a quick note that if you want an idea of where the mod is at, at the moment, I'm posting screenshots of the base I'm building as I work on this update, at least once a day.
I decided the best way for me to proceed with this one was to start off fresh with what is basically a "new world", play through the tech tree and fix problems as I encounter them.
So, the screenshots of my base basically serve to detail how far along in the process I am, and there's usually the most recent one on the last page of the thread
Here's the most recent one from last night:
And once again, the thread itself can be found here:
Translation: FlowerChild, please spend more time and work adding a completely useless feature to the windmills to make them look pretty while serving no useful purpose to the mechanical system.
This translation is provided so FC can ignore the quoted suggestion. To be honest, I believe he ignores any suggestions in this thread already.
Wow... seems like all you can do is being negative... stop making ppl feel bad.
I'm primarily an anarchy player when I play SMP, and one of the things I love about it is the constant sense of living in fear of other players (I actually find playing anarchy MC has a somewhat similar sensation to playing DayZ).
I was curious about the 'forced' merged on SSP / SMP from the latest update and how the mod would respond. Now, I am fairly new to forum-speak (I usually just download a mod, give a +1 rep, and move on), but when someone says 'PvP' do they literally mean player VERSUS player, or just the fact that it's multiplayer?
I ask because one of the biggest things I LOVE about this mod is the steady, purposeful, goal-oriented technological progressions. FC's focus on gameplay design clearly shows, and that aspect of this mod is better than any other mod I've ever played. That being said, I ask about the 'future' of BTW in regards to both PvP / multiplayer because I think it would be fascinating to have multi-player specific achievements built into the game. I haven't thought of specifics, but one example would be to somehow only allow certain items, structures, etc to be built w/ multiple players. Sort of like a Quaker community where they wanted to have everyone build a schoolhouse (or similarly important structure). Or, in 'real' PvP - kill someone w/ a soul-forged steel weapon and it becomes (embued?) with the spirit (or just name) of the people it's killed. Again, just spitballing, but I think incorporating a collaborative effort into the mod would open new doors for gameplay

Well, we know who'll be the first couple of people called on to help with that if it happens... </jealousy>
The only real glaring problem i see in that test world screenshot is that I'm not in it. Really though, I give my hats off to you - rarely do you see someone do an almost play-by-play of their modding AND keep at the mod itself the way you do (almost like you really do care... ). One of many reasons why I'm drawn to this mod like a mosquito to a bug zapper.

Player versus player, as opposed to multiplayer creative or whatever. FC wants us killing each other and blowing @#$% up.

I just noticed you and me use the same colors for our windmills. But, what's the lava for? By the way, can the same fix you applied to the hearts be applied to gearboxes, or do gearboxes function properly when powered? Is this vanilla 1.3 generation? I haven't seen much of it, but I like what I see here.
Well, we know who'll be the first couple of people called on to help with that if it happens... </jealousy>
Pfft, no. While I think I could do a rather professional job of it since that basically has been my job for the last three years, I won't get the next BTW release before anyone else. The masses are his testing pool... he's just stingy about QA funds so he tends to do it a lot himself.
Why not allow it in a mod pack? This looks like the perfect mod to have in one.
It's actually not. It's designed to be a rather stand-alone mod, even if it is not quite as incompatible as claimed. It's tech tree is very self-contained, and adding other things in just messes up the balance.

I'd take it a step further and say there is no mod that is perfect for a mod pack. While not against the idea, I have yet to see a mod pack where the mods didn't trip over each others' feet and essentially boil down to a cheese fest in features and nullifying any survival challenge.
You guys should make this compatible with the technic pack, that way I dont have to play two seperate worlds to play the mods, this would be so much better with technic
FlowerChild thinks Technic is a ridiculous conglomeration of useless and redundant functionality that steals mods. Plus it used Forge.

I've been considering it. It wouldn't be the full map though, as this is actually just a distant portion of my main world that I built a nether-rail network to in order to start over.
I'm not down with sharing my main world in general (it's my baby), plus it's around a gig in size, so it's not really a reasonable download. What I'm thinking of doing though is grabbing this portion of it with MCEdit or something, and putting that up for download.

Honestly, I needed a bucket for water, and all of mine were filled with lava from when I constructed my nether-portal out of a dirt mould.
So I just dug a quick pit and dumped the lava there for later use
