You have to install Forge:
At Optifine downloads check for the recommended Forge version:https://optifine.net/downloads
Then download Forge: http://files.minecraftforge.net/
Install Forge and start Minecraft with that Forge profile - close the game in main menu
At .minecraft you will now find a mods-folder - move Optifine inside this folder and start Minecraft with Forge again
You also can install Optifine as stand-alone mod - just double-click on the optifine-jar
In your Launcher, select the Optifine profile.
......Well yes, probly shoulda said I have Forge on there already. And I'm trying to install it onto another folder I already have; tried once to extract onto said folder, and it basically just duped the installer; tried moving it from the .minecraft folder to the other folder, and it lolnoped the mod when I started it up.
This is the version for 1.15.2, btw.
GET OFF MAH LAWN.
With your Launcher, create a new profile
Choose 1.15.2 as version
and as Game directory the path to your folder
Run the game and close it in main menu
Then install Forge into this folder
Run the profile with forge and close it in main menu
Then put Optifine into /mods/
..........Uh, I've done all that already; that's the problem.
GET OFF MAH LAWN.
Are there any logs?
Well there wasn't a crash involved, so......not sure.
GET OFF MAH LAWN.
Check the logs-folder and add the latest.log
Ok, I see where I've gone wrong in explaining after looking over my prior explanation; I'm trying to install it onto a profile I already have in a different folder.

Is there a reason why you want to install Optifine outside your .minecraft-directory?
Forge or Optifine can be installed at their default location
With your you can still use a different game directory
If it is not working, check for a custom Launcher like AT Launcher - the game directory it there were you run this Launcher
With it, you can search for a clean Forge or Optifine modpack
Because I used to be able to use it in a different folder, just like any other mod? I've used Optifine before on previous versions, and I did not have to go through all of this iirc. Which is why I'm really confused, here.
GET OFF MAH LAWN.
If you load Optifine with Forge then you can run Optifine.jar in a new location
Install Forge at its default location
In your profile select the forge version and the path to your new location
After running this forge version at the new location will be a mods folder created
There you can put Optifine in
Forge IS installed in the default location though. I can't install Optifine directly into the other folder, and I can't get the folder to accept the .jar copied from the default folder either.

any change of updated forge support for 1.12.2? I could really use this mod.
There are 1.12.2 versions of it:
https://optifine.net/downloads
But not for the forge version I'm on. It's only 2847 I'm on 2854
You can use the latest version anyway - the given Forge version is a recommendation.
For 1.12.2 you also can ignore that - it is important for the newer Optifine versions
Please Help! I followed the instructions and have downloaded optifine but it wont let me add shaders!! What am I doing wrong??
After installing Optifine make sure you select the Optifine profile at Installations
After running Optifine once then you will find a shaderpacks folder in your .minecraft-folder
Download some shaderpacks:
https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/customization/search?search=Shaders
and put the zip file into your shaderpacks-folder
Ingame at video setting you will find "shaders" - there you can choose the downloaded shaders
OptiFine 1.16.5_HD_U_G7 still has invisible mobs :c
Here during the 10th anniversary of this mod!
