I can't get OptiFine HD to open its installer. Every time I try, the file just gets unzipped. Necessary details: MacOS Catalina. I tried the Magic Launcher method, but Magic Launcher does not have a new enough version for Minecraft 1.16.3 and when I tried anyway MacOS responded with "“MagicLauncher.app” needs to be updated". I am not sure what to do. I would rather not try Forge because I have done it before and after a year of use eventually broke the entire .jar file. Luckily, I was able get the Minecraft folder out before deleting and reinstalling, so no worlds lost.
My only guess would be that I do not have Java installed. The Java Version of Minecraft does not need Java installed as it has its own Virtual Java.

That seems to be exactly the problem that you are facing.
Either you do not have Java installed at all or you are not using Java to run the Jar file.

I had performance issues in Hypixel and other servers when using 1.8.9 optifine, random frametime spikes and the screen would freeze up for split seconds at a time. My framerate is high so the stuttering was unusual. I managed to fix it doing the most simple thing that you wouldn't think would fix it..
Question : Does anyone here who uses 1.8.9 optifine get random stuttering / screen freezes / lag, when on a server, even though your framerate is high? When on a server, check to see if these tall white spikes appear on the Lagometer, you can't miss them, they stand out.
To open the Lagometer, in game hold Alt and press F3. Now watch players as they spawn into the game. If you see these spikes :
Try this :
1) Open video settings
2) Toggle Smooth lighting Level from 100% to 0%, wait a couple of seconds then switch back to 100%.
3) Or, If the smooth lighting level is already 0%, toggle Smooth lighting Level from 0% to 100%, wait a couple of seconds then switch back to 0%.
After doing the above, check Lagometer again, tall white spikes are gone? The game should be much smoother.
You aren't disabling any options, you are simply toggling one option, leaving your own settings intact. This simple toggle, reloads the shadows (or something like that) and can fix random stuttering for some users. The fix stays applied until you close Minecraft. I found that players spawning onto the map causes the spikes to occur, and turning player visibility to off is an alternative solution to toggling smooth lighting level (although I prefer to keep players visible).
I seem to be having trouble with optifine, whenever i try to craft birch logs into birch planks the game crashes. Disabling optifine fixes this. My crash report: https://pastebin.com/ysRe6UdB
Thanks so much, disabling fastbench fixed it. I'll make sure to post any other issues I have on github. As it turns out i was using an outdated version of fastworkbench
Hey there guys, I have a problem, I hope someone can help me.
First of all: I'm a noob, so please forgive me...
Here's my problem:
I'm running Minecraft Java on my HP Omen 15 gaming laptop. When I start up the Minecraft Launcher and use it to start the latest UNMODDED Minecraft version, I load up a world, open the debug menu and it says that the game is using my Nvidia Geforce 2070 GPU.
However, when I'm running the OptiFine Version (or the Forge Version) of Minecraft, the game is using my Intel Onboard GPU, which of course causes fps to drop quite significantly when I'm using shaders (BSL).
How can I get the modded versions to use my Nvidia GPU, just like the unmodded version does?!
Ugh... I did set the MinecraftLauncher.exe to use my Nvidia before, which seemed to do it for the unmodded version... Your suggestion fixed it! Thanks a lot!
I'm working from memory and it isn't what it once was.
I think if you look at earlier posts you'll find Mojang tried to purchase Optifine (probably multiple tries). sp614x and Mojang could never arrive at a mutually satisfactory agreement.

Thanks TileEntity. Appreciate the help.

Try it with Technic Launcher: https://www.technicpack.net/download
And search for an Optifine modpack

Proof it works -

Just a black window that appears for a second?
Then you have to run jarfix:

You should post your issues here: https://github.com/sp614x/optifine/issues
Test it with Forge 1.16.4 build 35.0.1 or without fastbench

Just check your Nvidia Control Panel - Add a new program and check for the latest one
Set all Java versions to high performance

why is optifine still necessary ?
why can't Mojang implement similar methods to make the client more performant? is something sacrificed for performance when using optifine?
just curious!

Ok, I'll bite: How do I put Optifine into a folder that ISN'T in the .minecraft folder? Because I haven't gotten that to work. :/
GET OFF MAH LAWN.
