Disclaimer for the lazy: this is about CrossTalk, mumblelink works fine.
Well, the attenuation works a little in the beta, but is not as great as in mumble, as the finetuning is difficult.
Crosstalk uses "dB reduction per meter" and maximum reduction, while mumble uses percentage (which makes mumble way easier to adjust).
The low position refreshrate still causes problems - but that's a TS problem.
an untested situation is 4 people in one mumble/TS channel, but two on MC server A - and two on server B.
the plugin would pick up my pos and that of my buddy who is on a different server, so we would hear eachother, as if we were in one world, although we were on different ones.
this could be countered by having this mod transmit the MCserver's IP+port along with the character specific data.

Thanks for those details and for posting at Thorwe's issue tracker. I felt bad for not getting back at him but haven't had anything to add :/
So I will keep an eye on CrossTalk
The problem with two different servers is not that easy to resolve. It is actually quite simple to write an addon for the MumbleLink mod to insert the server IP but that has two potential issues. It also applies for different worlds on the same server or other servers (you will hear some one positionally when you are in the overworld and the partner is in for example the nether).
1. The problem arises when the people are connecting from different networks. For example, if you are hosting the game on your PC you will probably connect to either "localhost" which is 127.0.0.1 or some other LAN address (i.e. 192.168.1.100). When you expose your PC with port-forwarding for your friends they will see your router's IP. So there are already 3 different ways to connect to the server each of you will know the server by a different IP. If we now go by IP mumble would think each player is on a different server because the IPs don't match (mumble calls this the "context") - therefore it wouldn't link.
To counter this I was trying to use the world seed but that didn't work. So the closest I came up with is the world spawn location. But I think it is not that unique and if that is changed to like 0,0,0 the collision probability is even higher.
Ok, granted, if it is a dedicated server on a remote host where everybody has to use the same IP to connect to, the IP is a valid consideration. But maybe mojang has some unique id for those public servers that we could use instead.
2. Another issue is the default behaviour of mumble for when the "context"s don't match: instead of muting the players like ACRE does now - it transmits the sound for the non-linked players at full volume, centered (like shouting/whispering). This makes it unreasonable to have those different players in the same channel. Every time they would try to talk locally they would in fact shout into everyone else's ears (except for the ones on the servers). I have mentioned this problem in previous posts and submitted a feature request for that but Mumble dev's seem to ignore it.
This is what the mod currently sends for data:
The important part is context and identity.
The "context" specifies whether two users are playing the same game (on the same server, in the same world).
Mumble is simple here: if the contexts of two users match they are "linked". They can hear audio data of each other with the positional effects. Everyone else is full volume, centered.
The "identity" can be seen as a unique id to know who is who in the game world.
This can be expanded without much effects as long as their identity stays unique. In fact other 3rd party applications (like mumo) could use this to do some tricks with for example the mumble user - like switching you into the minecraft channel.
So to conclude, putting the IP into the context has some weird effects and doesn't really help.
Putting it into the identity simply has no effect as long as there are no 3rd party application using it.
So you're suggesting to mute the unlinked users to the linked users?
that would make it unreasonable to stay in channel for the unlinked players, as we usually talk even when we are playing completely different games.
but adjusting the volume of unlinked players to 90% instead could do the trick for me.
but if mumble doesnt have that feature yet, we have to be patient.
Sniping Coward! Could you help me troubleshoot?
I've been trying to test your mod with a friend, but positional audio doesn't seem to be working. I also can't hear him, but he can hear me no matter how far away I am.
For your information, I am using:
Mumble 1.2.8
Forge11.14.0.1268-1.8
and the latest version of your mod.
We triple checked our settings(he is also using mumble 1.2.8), positional audio is ticked, linked to transmit game is ticked, link1.2.0 is ticked, etc.
When we entered my server, I see mumble linked in chat and minecraft linked in mumble, and my friend reports the same thing.
What could be going wrong?

Basically yes. The justification to stay in channel is that the whisper to channel would still work. It would be a concious decision to broadcast to everyone instead of doing it even when you intend to speak only to a friend right next to you ("Watch out creeper!").

When both of you see both "linked"-messages it should really work.
Have you tried communicating through mumble without the mod? Does that work properly?
Which operating systems are you using? If you are on Windows please provide a screenshot of PAHelper once each of you is all linked.
Also please provide a screenshot of your audio output and input settings.
Sorry, it's working now! We couldn't speak to each other normally in mumble, so I just uninstalled and reinstalled the murmur server. After that it all worked fine. Thanks and sorry for bothering! Awesome work by the way

Hello, I seem to be having a problem with this mumble mod on my Macbook Pro. It seems to crash whenever i try to start up the game. Here are the logs. I've also bolded where I think the problem accrued.

unfortunately this is a known compatibility issue that has been fix with the 1.8 release of this mod.
Your best option is to update Java (you should do that anyways because java releases usually fix security issues). Alternatively upgrade Minecraft to 1.8.
This is probably a stupid question, do I need a mumble server for this?
It is a valid question.
There is no server software shipped with this mod (no integrated server). So all users will need to know and connect to stand-alone mumble server.
However you do not need to host one. You can use any public server that you like no special link between the Minecraft server and the Mumble server is required.
Of course, you can also host the server yourself. The server software is called "Murmur".
Here is a schema depicting the relations of the components involved:
Yes, currently crashed on my minecraft forge server, would like some help, because for the nature of the server, we do require this mod.

I'm looking all over to get this to work with no luck. I don't know if you'd be willing to help out since I'm using an old version of the mod, but his is my error report:

firepanda27,
unfortunately this is a known compatibility issue that has been fix with the 1.8 release of this mod.
Your best option is to update Java (you should do that anyways because java releases usually fix security issues). Alternatively upgrade Minecraft to 1.8.
Want Positional VOIP? Get the Mod for Mumble Support

Cool, thanks for he note.
Here is an FYI for other mod pack makers.
Want Positional VOIP? Get the Mod for Mumble Support
Yes, currently crashed on my minecraft forge server, would like some help, because for the nature of the server, we do require this mod.

Ok, so I know I'm going to sound dumb of this most likely and probably. But I am trying to run this with my tekkit classic server. I'm using version 2.4.4 of this mod and running tekkit classic. I'm looking all over to get this to work with no luck. I don't know if you'd be willing to help out since I'm using an old version of the mod, but his is my error report:
