World Name: (Suggest me one or help out and you can name the world) Size: 10k by 8k blocks Server: (Currently none but testing on a local bukkit server, if anyone wants to see the progress please ask)
Goal: To create a RPG style world and eventual build server that anyone can have some kind of design input into with various areas.
Map Regions: (Images)
A rough border and design layout image.
Current ingame world painter top down map - will be occasionally updated: (Reduced by 75% in width and height from original due to issues showing it online.)
Breakdown of regions:
North Mainland: Hills with snow water etc kinda like skyrim - This is kinda up for grabs for anyone to design themselves as I want it designed by others.
North Region: broken up into zones.
-Forest: High up forest in the mountains with some canyons rivers etc.
-Wasteland: A region that's lifeless where the undead live and general zombie land.
-Wetlands: Swamps and stuff with trees all around.
-Alcove: A cave town that is next to the water that pirates or bandits etc would live in with wrecked ships around etc.
-Desert: A general desert with a desert style dusty town in the middle.
-Fantasy: Shrooms and more shrooms a place thats unusual and different and in a fantasy style elf setting or something.
-Plains A town will be here with a port to connect to the Northern Mainland so general plains around the town.
East Hills: The main mountain range of the southern mainland with a cave to a 'City of Ember' style underground city.
Southern Region: Towns and a normalised style area with a river some trees etc.
West Region: A extension of the central city I'll call this the (outer wall city) directly from the main city to a port on the coast so the city will keep flowing seamlessly, for the other areas outside that city will be much like the Southern region.
(Unnamed Region below West Region): Kinda like Gerudo Village area from Zelda with hills and a river running through it and eventually a town built into the mountains.
Little Vienna: A canal town amongst the water with a Final Fanyasy XIV Eorzea style waterfall and mountain climb on the east side of the city.
What am I looking for: (how can you help)
- Suggestions for the topo map - make a suggestion no matter how silly you think it might sound it could be useful.
+ if you want to draw on the maps here and post them in this thread or send them to me etc.
- Anyone that can use world painter to help cleanup, whoever wants to help can discuss with me and get a copy of the map to cleanup and change along ongoing discussions (1 person editing at the map at any time)
- Anyone that can do town layouts (anyone chosen can eventually manage and lead construction in that area and quality control)
- Feedback on anything even if you like it or hate it, think I suck and should give up minecraft altogether just let me know what's on your mind, that alone is a important thing.
Future Plans:
To eventually make this into a actual server.
It will have all the tools needed and players such as world edit and voxelsniper if wanted etc and full creative mode, if people have experience they can use these tools to build the towns and stuff inside the map, also full schematics can be available, so you build it you can own the scheme of it.

I know I haven't had any replies and looking on the forum I see some other threads that the guys are just starting there builds or doing something really basic with not much currently shown getting replies oh well.

Now the area has more rivers and a river through hills etc.
Little Vienna I cant do much on till I have a actual landscape plan if anyone wants to help out with that.
The world is in rough form and will be detailed etc once areas and features are decided upon and details are roughly hand mapped first.

Big update to this thread with a completely revised first post outlining clearly the goals and latest images of the map in full size.
I assume updating this thread won't do much as people don't really seem interested which is usual for me, oh well I dunno if I'll keep this thread alive.
I had hoped at least a couple would have been interested enough to helping out and I don't really care if aren't too skilled as long as you can learn and do something fun that you may like to do in minecraft.
Dunno how much I'm going to do to this but its a ingame shot at least rather than topo maps.
This area is a little cove in the hills and the path off at the top is meant to be high like that as I am going to do something cool there and then goes off to a small cliff over the ocean around there will be a cave with a town in it before going back out to the main open areas.
There's another kinda area other side of the map that goes to a town.
Well even if no-one replies to this thread I'll still update but I hate this thread to be ignored and to make 10+ posts in a row here and for all of you guys to think I'm full of myself posting this when no-one cares and if thats the case just tell me straight up.
Little annoying as I see people who are asking for people to complete build maps and do things for them and stuff as they can't do things themselves getting replies yet here I am able to at least build a world run a 300+ person 41 plugin server etc and people don't seem to take notice or really care to say a single thing about something I'm trying to get community feedback on where I would accept most views or suggestions on this.
If the mods aren't happy with me doing this project and think I may be clogging up this forum making multiple posts without other interest on the thread, then please let me know straight away.
Area I was working on fine tuning abit today my forest in the northwest region itrs only 1 20th of the size so far.
Its pretty large the screenshot below is one small section of it.and goes up to 200+ blocks with the sea on the edge of the forest and the alcove is underneath.
Under half built so far on landmass with the proper hill modeling and needs some finer work done on edges of the paths etc.
Also started shaping what will be a very big underwater city on the west.
If anyone wants to comment back to this thread or offer to help please feel free to post here, I can even help you in turn where you might need some help.
For anyone that cares current progression screenshots.
Sunken Plateau in the Plains (was happy with how that wall turned out).
Forest swamp lands (area is very large) a very cool swamp town will be built somewhere in here as the area is already allocated and ready to go.
Side of the sand mountain range from a distance.
Sand mountain range again where a mountain dweller nomad town will be the town will be integrated into the hill at the back, all built in sandstone etc so it really blends in.
Still looking if anyone wants to suggest stuff or help out and this will move allot faster if I had those people.
Also wasteland is going to full redesign as it was the first area I built on the map and not up to standard.
So I'm trying to figure out a kinda map and design. where I can have a big gorge and town in the mountains as I have between 80 and 180 height to play with to be natural with whats around it.
Also fixed up the full World Painter map image at the top if it had issues as I had to reduce it by 75% size to stop google from turning it into a attachment.
Note: world painter map not updated with these screenshots yet but will once more map changes get done as there's not enough major ones to replace the map only allot of cleanup and fleshing out of a couple of areas that are on there.
I would definitely be interesting it helping, wanted to do a collab for a while just didn't know where to look. I was also building a adventure map but working solo has its draw backs

At the moment map is in heavy World Painter stage so were not building yet and won't be for quite a while, a month at least I'd imagine as theres allot to make on the terrain so if you guys have ideas and want to draw up a area or something then you are free to create a kinda map of a area we can paint using as a reference.
eaglechopper Or should I say ApacheHavoc I know your name from my old server I ran last year (this is my ingame name other is Revenger which is usually my forum name but was taken here) which I think it was you that built the epic castle on the hill, and a direct friend of good Bench and no9 (had to look up the old database table). Well Love to have you on mate definitely so tell me what you can do and where you would like to help, been a long time though didn't see you on the server all that much before it closed, then again it was the same with most others that weren't staying around to whing at decisions constantly.
Eagle you should know my stuff and what I'm capable of in minecraft then and the level of quality I try to run servers, so that alone should be a good thing.

xUSMCxMARIN3x love to see what you have done did a quick look and seemed allot of grey and cobble in your Orbit Industries map like stuff was built mostly out of it, nothing against you as I don't know your work and couldn't tell what you can do from those pics, so thats why I'm mentioning it as Id love to see what you're capable of but as a tip properly mix things up abit and highlight areas of buildings in a different block like edges of window frames, the building, the base etc and make sure roads are not the same as the building wall texture.

As I'm planning a level of quality the same and massive amount higher than my old server was and visual design is the most important thing when making a map rather than just the design.
by the at the time ingame manager Bench. Eagle I believe your building is in that vid I linked.
Also the map itself isn't a single player RPG map, its a kinda RPG style 'build project' looks nice map instead and may be the first of few maps depending, in one kinda big RPG world.
Think Legend of heroes, elder scrolls etc, each area is separate and independent in timelines etc but all part of one fictional world planet.
If you ever played Zelda64, Legend of heroes, secret of mana, Tails of (anything), Dot Hack, WoW, Guildwars 2 you will know the styles I'm going to be building as this project takes inspiration of all of those and more.
But ultimately this is a fun project and one I have wanted to do for 10+ years in some form make my own RPG world map in some way so there's no pressure time constraints or anything really as long as we can move slowly and keep progressing.
Actually, I used a lot of cobble and stuff on purpose, the point of the build is suppose to be Post apocalyptic and I used a lot of dark and gray blocks for the feel, that was just that part too. The feel of the map is "Big Brother" like and suppose to be similar in looks. Nothing is too "different from one and other". My best builds, are a lot better than Orbit Ind. and are more diverse, trust me. I know what you want, and I dont have much to learn honestly, because I know everything already. Im not 10, ive played for years now and have learned from the best, trust me, I wont let you down. Just message me, when you are ready for my help.
Awesome, would definitely like to hear more details on how the collab building is going to work, story/quests and other details. I'm not how much time I will have each week to help, but we will see how things go
As for time I'm not worried how much time people have as long as I have some good guys helping when they can its all good.
I have some ideas for the build stage but thats not for ages away at the moment is the terrain world paint stage which I need help on.
So until the world is made in World Painter I'm not going to think too much about actual building apart from initial tests to see how one might go about building the stuff which I have done alittle of.
As for quests and story I don't this will go that far I just want to make a high quality map with towns and stuff nothing more really.
I don't think any plugin is up to doing quests the normal way mmo's etc do and that minecraft might be a hacky way to quest thats why im not going to plan to go down that path for quests and stuff as for books sure we can fill those in but thats as far as I would assume we would go.
Hey there I'm looking to help build stuff in a Server to make and RPG adventure Map. I believe I am quite good at building cities and I am quite good at art so I could help with anything forum related that you want looking cool. For example that map

This map scale is quite larger than your vid as roads on my map are 8 blocks wide to look natural etc.
At the moment in stuck designing the map, while I have the basics down and some areas made, actual finer design of the areas thats not vague which I have done I'm having issues with so looking for anyone that can take the map as I have done and help to flesh it out make it less bland and vague while not taking anything away from it more with stuff paths hills and other features.
There is one area that needs a redesign thats wasteland which I would love with bridges over canyons a town in the mountains and areas that are just wasted.
All the hills are built in bulk so there's no tight trails through the mountains leading to caves like in elders scrolls etc nor is the design of the current hills suited for them and thats another area i'm stuck fleshing out the hills making them tighter so I can put trails in even on cliff sides aka this because the current design is too smooth and not suited to anything like this, when I know I need to make the hills tighter etc or people that can help with that so it can be good enough to have trails like that and bridges over rivers etc.
This is the level of detail I want to get down to but cannot do it alone so need people to help with that.

I've been watching the 'Akiba Festival' in Akihabara Japan live online yesterday and today as well as all the F1 stuff.
As promised the World Painter top down image render has been updated to the latest map in the first post.

Some notes about this map image render:
Wasteland is a complete mess needs a complete overhaul hence the terrain blocks as I was testing putting it to grass to see if that was easier for me to design which it was but I cant design that area for anything.
The pink transparent circles are caverns.
The little forest area at the top next to the wasteland was a initial test for that area.
Roads are the grey lines.
Area at the south west is a new town area the terrain is mostly done just needs a polish and a town layout I have some key building locations in my head but apart from that I don't have a layout yet.
You can see the plateau near the hills at the river.
The weird water area above swamp is meant to be like that and will be a little river to a cave with a town in the mountain there, the lake that is behind will be a secluded part of the town with a temple or something in it.
Current snowy mountains won't be the only snowy mountains in the end.
Facts, areas the map is based on:
Areas that I say are based on are inspiration or loosely based on only, they are not going to be direct copies, just some of the ideas, concepts, designs come from there.
The overview map below the central town is looking more like it came directly from Ocarina of Time or Majoras Mask and yep that's how it has turned out in layout, I wasn't planning it to end up like that but it just happened so I decided to go with it and actually add in the Zelda areas in some small weird way.
Swampland inspiration from Avatar the last Airbender and other various thing.
The area in the swampland thats clear in the center is the town area think of ffx / x-2 kilika port with the houses on the water etc.
The area north between the desert and the snowy hills is based on FFXII with Ginza Plains and the town there with bridge over a ravine to it.
Plateau is based roughly on FFXI La Theine Plateau.
Little Vienna Falls will be based on the FFXIV Eorzea Waterfalls which were in the trailer but were not actually in the game.
Little Vienna will take a very small inspiration fir a small area of it from The Longest Journey where April Ryans apartment is but thats basically it.
The cave town in the snowy mountains will be based on the movie City of Ember.
The lava area is based on Chrono cross I think or another game forget which one (could be a final fantasy) where you need to climb up vines after going through a sulphur pit area.
Near that area is going to be a town based on the Guado area from FFX
Central city area is based on Guildwars 2 Divinity's Reach and this map supports about 250 buildings in the central area alone around where the castle will be initial guess was 500 at 30 blocks allocated for each place but with all the space between them the walls of the town the castle area more like 250 I would Imagine.
One area I hope to base on a anime movie which had a multi level industrial city above and below ground with a ravine going through it and the city had like 10 or so levels down and 10 up from ground level, I think it was (Metropolis) where they tried to bring the sun out again from a company that blocked the sun out so it was always night with the cities pollution through all the pipes etc.
Fantasy Region will take inspiration from Morrowind with its Mushroom areas.
Initial design of the map took loose inspiration from the area from Tales of Eternia where the main castle city and port etc were.
The river and where the bridge will be to northern region takes inspiration from WoW as well as a few other areas take small bits of inspiration from.
Desert I want to take inspiration from games such as SoM, Outcast etc and have a walled town in the middle of the desert surrounded by sand hills.
Lake at the top of north region with the cavern takes inspiration from a area from Guildwars 2.
Cavern area on the waterfront take placement from Farcry 3 but will be a smugglers area with no inspiration on that except mby pirates of caribbean or something.
Wasteland is meant to take a bit of inspiration from Dungeon seige.
Area on the south that town area is based on my own made up dream of a old style town with a blacksmith and trading carts etc which was loosely based on Zelda.
What is listed above are the main influences and there many other inspirations all through the map will take inspiration from various mmo games like WoW with areas and design and things from Dot Hack, Skyrim etc and stuff not even listed.
Only adding stuff when I actually have the mindset to do it.
I'll say here at the moment I do not need builders but instead anyone that can help with map design is appreciated.
Its going to be at least 3 months till the map is properly exported from world painter and I even start thinking about building stuff on it.
Here is the plan for progress of this map.
Before then the map has to be made its under half done in the landscape its pretty much a alpha at this stage.
Currently its a mostly rough laid out design thats still ages away from being finished as you can see in the world map there's massive areas with nothing in them, the whole map will be covered with something from a tree to a small hill to a road or even flowers etc by the time world painter stage is finished.
After the rough map the entire needs polishing which im doing to areas as I go but overall that needs a full check and polish with a map tracking system so people can mark areas that need fixing on a online system this stage will included trees, rivers, lakes, biomes etc, the ground material all the hills etc to be made checked and added based on the reports, anything to do with the terrain.
All the custom ground cover etc flowers wheat netherwarts etc unless they are part of the default grass cover etc reports will still be made but will be fixed after the base fixes are completed.
Then the fix to the terrain etc happens and someone verifies the fixes so they are up to the standard required to meet the reports etc.
After that all the extra stuff is done to the map all the manicured grass, flower beds, all the netherwart etc plants and small mushrooms to make the map more fantasy style based on reports suggestions and just what feels right.
Then that all gets checked and done on reports as well as the rest of the map.
From there the plan is to get a small team to go over and finish and fix anything that can't be done in world painter ingame and then verify all those fixes.
From there thats when the builders will come in at that stage but in doing so before any builds are done rough ideas etc will need to be planned checked off and agreed on by everyone and approved before anything gets built as this project is not a open build server its a planned and managed build project so a separate flat world may be built for testing and planning ideas on.
In order for people to help out with the project certain baseline standards in quality and attitude will need to be met once we get closer to the build stage as this will probably end up having get 100+ people trying to sign up that whinge and can't build properly instead of all cobble or wood only and start doing there own things crying whenever someone says anything. And yep I've experienced that in a very bad way on my last server.
This ultimately is a private project and there will be no tolerance for people that can't respect that or who feel left out or injusticed by that.
Those who do end up building will probably be split into teams or something depending what happens, those that are professional enough with the mature attitudes and won't take advantage of anything for themselves, that can and do communicate everything properly and efficiently politely etc will end up in a kind of key staff position.
If people build stuff it will be in certain areas only and there will be constant reviews of areas ingame and if the stuff isn't up to scratch and what the ideas and designs are etc or buildings in not the right areas then those buildings will be taken down and rebuilt or whatever, this will probably be a very regular occurrence redoing areas and builds in the game.
Thats pretty much the plan and will be ongoing for however long as from then on it will be a semi private build server something like Westerocraft currently is.
So I'm just getting it out there that all those that want to help this is what is planned and the level of quality and requirements etc that will be for this project.
So if you think this is a open project or you one to get annoyed and angry when things may not go your way and upset when you build something then told its not up to scratch or your stuff starts getting pulled down while you are the middle of a build as a result then please look elsewhere.
Also if you can't log onto a dedicated forum and check it before doing anything or communicate on there before doing anything then please look elsewhere also as I don't want anyone who will get ingame without knowing anything going on or any changes that happen during the life of the project.
My last server had people building a cobble box and patchwork buildings where the roof were in patterns because they built it single layer and floored the floor for each room and it showed up on the floor below or even a half dirt in the wall building or half dirt half glass window etc. They all thought they were great builders and most left or got really upset when I told them there stuff wasn't up to scratch for the server.
We even had a building review and reward system for people to build better and learn and that still did not help.
And as for the forum we had people crying ingame something had changed when they didn't know or were oblivious to new features etc because most a good 70% of all supposed builders refused to go to look or post to the forum, and even they refused to post a server issue or suggestion in the tracker when they had one instead wanted to tell me in person or not at all which wasn't good for tracking all the issues and suggestions in a central place
Ok rant over I was posting my outline what I expect of anyone helping with the project etc. If this makes you think I'm a screwed up person now and disrespectful etc then thats your thing to deal with. But I hope some of you see it from the other side on why these are my plans and if it was your big project.

Project stalled over the last couple months, I was just starting to look at doing some better rugged small hills and cliffs but things just ontop of me and I had mindblock for terrain'ing and stuff and kinds ended forgetting about this abit.
I still plan on doing this project the above post stands and is always going to be the rollout plan once world painting stage is up to a certain standard.
I know theres soo many people on here that wouldn't care about world painter and think everything can be built ingame on voxelsniper or worldedit but in reality especially on a project like this you need to build the terrain and landscape first before you even get into the game to do the building.
World painter is not too far different to what actual developers use when making the actual areas for your games, aka skyrim, mmo's you play (WoW Aion, GW2, FFXIV) etc they in a sense paint and shape the areas using tools very similar if you have used editors in other games to make maps for AoE, Simcity 4 and other strategy games etc.
This stage is the most important part of my project because otherwise the map could just be a flat shape or square with no hills rivers etc and that would be pretty boring for you all wouldn't it?
Currently if anyone wants to help out with world painting thats where I need people even those that can do a 5 min kinda crappy mspaint outline using the pen tool of some sort of landscape.
Thats where I need people to get the painting stage finished because until that happens this project is not going anywhere from here.
My plan is sometime just after or around the next month once I redo all my pc's etc which I have planned to do and fully sort out within the next month, to pull the map out again and try to start work again on world painting.
Hey drg, just finished reading all of the above posts and I would LOVE to help out. I have plenty of experience with worldpainter so if you want help with that I can definitely do that. I would also love to help with in game terraforming (for finer details) and building if necessary. I'm well versed in the likes of world edit in game and can definitely do that.

Also started shaping what will be a very big underwater city on the west.

Sunken Plateau in the Plains (was happy with how that wall turned out).
Forest swamp lands (area is very large) a very cool swamp town will be built somewhere in here as the area is already allocated and ready to go.
Side of the sand mountain range from a distance.
Sand mountain range again where a mountain dweller nomad town will be the town will be integrated into the hill at the back, all built in sandstone etc so it really blends in.
Still looking if anyone wants to suggest stuff or help out and this will move allot faster if I had those people.
Also wasteland is going to full redesign as it was the first area I built on the map and not up to standard.
So I'm trying to figure out a kinda map and design. where I can have a big gorge and town in the mountains as I have between 80 and 180 height to play with to be natural with whats around it.
Also fixed up the full World Painter map image at the top if it had issues as I had to reduce it by 75% size to stop google from turning it into a attachment.
Note: world painter map not updated with these screenshots yet but will once more map changes get done as there's not enough major ones to replace the map only allot of cleanup and fleshing out of a couple of areas that are on there.
At the moment map is in heavy World Painter stage so were not building yet and won't be for quite a while, a month at least I'd imagine as theres allot to make on the terrain so if you guys have ideas and want to draw up a area or something then you are free to create a kinda map of a area we can paint using as a reference.
eaglechopper Or should I say ApacheHavoc I know your name from my old server I ran last year (this is my ingame name other is Revenger which is usually my forum name but was taken here) which I think it was you that built the epic castle on the hill, and a direct friend of good Bench and no9 (had to look up the old database table). Well Love to have you on mate definitely so tell me what you can do and where you would like to help, been a long time though didn't see you on the server all that much before it closed, then again it was the same with most others that weren't staying around to whing at decisions constantly.
Eagle you should know my stuff and what I'm capable of in minecraft then and the level of quality I try to run servers, so that alone should be a good thing.

xUSMCxMARIN3x love to see what you have done did a quick look and seemed allot of grey and cobble in your Orbit Industries map like stuff was built mostly out of it, nothing against you as I don't know your work and couldn't tell what you can do from those pics, so thats why I'm mentioning it as Id love to see what you're capable of but as a tip properly mix things up abit and highlight areas of buildings in a different block like edges of window frames, the building, the base etc and make sure roads are not the same as the building wall texture.

As I'm planning a level of quality the same and massive amount higher than my old server was and visual design is the most important thing when making a map rather than just the design.
by the at the time ingame manager Bench. Eagle I believe your building is in that vid I linked.
Also the map itself isn't a single player RPG map, its a kinda RPG style 'build project' looks nice map instead and may be the first of few maps depending, in one kinda big RPG world.
Think Legend of heroes, elder scrolls etc, each area is separate and independent in timelines etc but all part of one fictional world planet.
If you ever played Zelda64, Legend of heroes, secret of mana, Tails of (anything), Dot Hack, WoW, Guildwars 2 you will know the styles I'm going to be building as this project takes inspiration of all of those and more.
But ultimately this is a fun project and one I have wanted to do for 10+ years in some form make my own RPG world map in some way so there's no pressure time constraints or anything really as long as we can move slowly and keep progressing.
I have some ideas for the build stage but thats not for ages away at the moment is the terrain world paint stage which I need help on.
So until the world is made in World Painter I'm not going to think too much about actual building apart from initial tests to see how one might go about building the stuff which I have done alittle of.
As for quests and story I don't this will go that far I just want to make a high quality map with towns and stuff nothing more really.
I don't think any plugin is up to doing quests the normal way mmo's etc do and that minecraft might be a hacky way to quest thats why im not going to plan to go down that path for quests and stuff as for books sure we can fill those in but thats as far as I would assume we would go.

This map scale is quite larger than your vid as roads on my map are 8 blocks wide to look natural etc.
At the moment in stuck designing the map, while I have the basics down and some areas made, actual finer design of the areas thats not vague which I have done I'm having issues with so looking for anyone that can take the map as I have done and help to flesh it out make it less bland and vague while not taking anything away from it more with stuff paths hills and other features.
There is one area that needs a redesign thats wasteland which I would love with bridges over canyons a town in the mountains and areas that are just wasted.
All the hills are built in bulk so there's no tight trails through the mountains leading to caves like in elders scrolls etc nor is the design of the current hills suited for them and thats another area i'm stuck fleshing out the hills making them tighter so I can put trails in even on cliff sides aka this because the current design is too smooth and not suited to anything like this, when I know I need to make the hills tighter etc or people that can help with that so it can be good enough to have trails like that and bridges over rivers etc.
This is the level of detail I want to get down to but cannot do it alone so need people to help with that.

I've been watching the 'Akiba Festival' in Akihabara Japan live online yesterday and today as well as all the F1 stuff.

Some notes about this map image render:
Wasteland is a complete mess needs a complete overhaul hence the terrain blocks as I was testing putting it to grass to see if that was easier for me to design which it was but I cant design that area for anything.
The pink transparent circles are caverns.
The little forest area at the top next to the wasteland was a initial test for that area.
Roads are the grey lines.
Area at the south west is a new town area the terrain is mostly done just needs a polish and a town layout I have some key building locations in my head but apart from that I don't have a layout yet.
You can see the plateau near the hills at the river.
The weird water area above swamp is meant to be like that and will be a little river to a cave with a town in the mountain there, the lake that is behind will be a secluded part of the town with a temple or something in it.
Current snowy mountains won't be the only snowy mountains in the end.
Facts, areas the map is based on:
Areas that I say are based on are inspiration or loosely based on only, they are not going to be direct copies, just some of the ideas, concepts, designs come from there.
The overview map below the central town is looking more like it came directly from Ocarina of Time or Majoras Mask and yep that's how it has turned out in layout, I wasn't planning it to end up like that but it just happened so I decided to go with it and actually add in the Zelda areas in some small weird way.
Swampland inspiration from Avatar the last Airbender and other various thing.
The area in the swampland thats clear in the center is the town area think of ffx / x-2 kilika port with the houses on the water etc.
The area north between the desert and the snowy hills is based on FFXII with Ginza Plains and the town there with bridge over a ravine to it.
Plateau is based roughly on FFXI La Theine Plateau.
Little Vienna Falls will be based on the FFXIV Eorzea Waterfalls which were in the trailer but were not actually in the game.
Little Vienna will take a very small inspiration fir a small area of it from The Longest Journey where April Ryans apartment is but thats basically it.
The cave town in the snowy mountains will be based on the movie City of Ember.
The lava area is based on Chrono cross I think or another game forget which one (could be a final fantasy) where you need to climb up vines after going through a sulphur pit area.
Near that area is going to be a town based on the Guado area from FFX
Central city area is based on Guildwars 2 Divinity's Reach and this map supports about 250 buildings in the central area alone around where the castle will be initial guess was 500 at 30 blocks allocated for each place but with all the space between them the walls of the town the castle area more like 250 I would Imagine.
One area I hope to base on a anime movie which had a multi level industrial city above and below ground with a ravine going through it and the city had like 10 or so levels down and 10 up from ground level, I think it was (Metropolis) where they tried to bring the sun out again from a company that blocked the sun out so it was always night with the cities pollution through all the pipes etc.
Fantasy Region will take inspiration from Morrowind with its Mushroom areas.
Initial design of the map took loose inspiration from the area from Tales of Eternia where the main castle city and port etc were.
The river and where the bridge will be to northern region takes inspiration from WoW as well as a few other areas take small bits of inspiration from.
Desert I want to take inspiration from games such as SoM, Outcast etc and have a walled town in the middle of the desert surrounded by sand hills.
Lake at the top of north region with the cavern takes inspiration from a area from Guildwars 2.
Cavern area on the waterfront take placement from Farcry 3 but will be a smugglers area with no inspiration on that except mby pirates of caribbean or something.
Wasteland is meant to take a bit of inspiration from Dungeon seige.
Area on the south that town area is based on my own made up dream of a old style town with a blacksmith and trading carts etc which was loosely based on Zelda.
What is listed above are the main influences and there many other inspirations all through the map will take inspiration from various mmo games like WoW with areas and design and things from Dot Hack, Skyrim etc and stuff not even listed.
Only adding stuff when I actually have the mindset to do it.
I'll say here at the moment I do not need builders but instead anyone that can help with map design is appreciated.
Its going to be at least 3 months till the map is properly exported from world painter and I even start thinking about building stuff on it.
Here is the plan for progress of this map.
Before then the map has to be made its under half done in the landscape its pretty much a alpha at this stage.
Currently its a mostly rough laid out design thats still ages away from being finished as you can see in the world map there's massive areas with nothing in them, the whole map will be covered with something from a tree to a small hill to a road or even flowers etc by the time world painter stage is finished.
After the rough map the entire needs polishing which im doing to areas as I go but overall that needs a full check and polish with a map tracking system so people can mark areas that need fixing on a online system this stage will included trees, rivers, lakes, biomes etc, the ground material all the hills etc to be made checked and added based on the reports, anything to do with the terrain.
All the custom ground cover etc flowers wheat netherwarts etc unless they are part of the default grass cover etc reports will still be made but will be fixed after the base fixes are completed.
Then the fix to the terrain etc happens and someone verifies the fixes so they are up to the standard required to meet the reports etc.
After that all the extra stuff is done to the map all the manicured grass, flower beds, all the netherwart etc plants and small mushrooms to make the map more fantasy style based on reports suggestions and just what feels right.
Then that all gets checked and done on reports as well as the rest of the map.
From there the plan is to get a small team to go over and finish and fix anything that can't be done in world painter ingame and then verify all those fixes.
From there thats when the builders will come in at that stage but in doing so before any builds are done rough ideas etc will need to be planned checked off and agreed on by everyone and approved before anything gets built as this project is not a open build server its a planned and managed build project so a separate flat world may be built for testing and planning ideas on.
In order for people to help out with the project certain baseline standards in quality and attitude will need to be met once we get closer to the build stage as this will probably end up having get 100+ people trying to sign up that whinge and can't build properly instead of all cobble or wood only and start doing there own things crying whenever someone says anything. And yep I've experienced that in a very bad way on my last server.
This ultimately is a private project and there will be no tolerance for people that can't respect that or who feel left out or injusticed by that.
Those who do end up building will probably be split into teams or something depending what happens, those that are professional enough with the mature attitudes and won't take advantage of anything for themselves, that can and do communicate everything properly and efficiently politely etc will end up in a kind of key staff position.
If people build stuff it will be in certain areas only and there will be constant reviews of areas ingame and if the stuff isn't up to scratch and what the ideas and designs are etc or buildings in not the right areas then those buildings will be taken down and rebuilt or whatever, this will probably be a very regular occurrence redoing areas and builds in the game.
Thats pretty much the plan and will be ongoing for however long as from then on it will be a semi private build server something like Westerocraft currently is.
So I'm just getting it out there that all those that want to help this is what is planned and the level of quality and requirements etc that will be for this project.
So if you think this is a open project or you one to get annoyed and angry when things may not go your way and upset when you build something then told its not up to scratch or your stuff starts getting pulled down while you are the middle of a build as a result then please look elsewhere.
Also if you can't log onto a dedicated forum and check it before doing anything or communicate on there before doing anything then please look elsewhere also as I don't want anyone who will get ingame without knowing anything going on or any changes that happen during the life of the project.
My last server had people building a cobble box and patchwork buildings where the roof were in patterns because they built it single layer and floored the floor for each room and it showed up on the floor below or even a half dirt in the wall building or half dirt half glass window etc. They all thought they were great builders and most left or got really upset when I told them there stuff wasn't up to scratch for the server.
We even had a building review and reward system for people to build better and learn and that still did not help.
And as for the forum we had people crying ingame something had changed when they didn't know or were oblivious to new features etc because most a good 70% of all supposed builders refused to go to look or post to the forum, and even they refused to post a server issue or suggestion in the tracker when they had one instead wanted to tell me in person or not at all which wasn't good for tracking all the issues and suggestions in a central place
Ok rant over I was posting my outline what I expect of anyone helping with the project etc.
If this makes you think I'm a screwed up person now and disrespectful etc then thats your thing to deal with.
But I hope some of you see it from the other side on why these are my plans and if it was your big project.
If anyone is still interested then thats great if not its no big loss.
I still plan on doing this project the above post stands and is always going to be the rollout plan once world painting stage is up to a certain standard.
I know theres soo many people on here that wouldn't care about world painter and think everything can be built ingame on voxelsniper or worldedit but in reality especially on a project like this you need to build the terrain and landscape first before you even get into the game to do the building.
World painter is not too far different to what actual developers use when making the actual areas for your games, aka skyrim, mmo's you play (WoW Aion, GW2, FFXIV) etc they in a sense paint and shape the areas using tools very similar if you have used editors in other games to make maps for AoE, Simcity 4 and other strategy games etc.
This stage is the most important part of my project because otherwise the map could just be a flat shape or square with no hills rivers etc and that would be pretty boring for you all wouldn't it?
Currently if anyone wants to help out with world painting thats where I need people even those that can do a 5 min kinda crappy mspaint outline using the pen tool of some sort of landscape.
Thats where I need people to get the painting stage finished because until that happens this project is not going anywhere from here.
My plan is sometime just after or around the next month once I redo all my pc's etc which I have planned to do and fully sort out within the next month, to pull the map out again and try to start work again on world painting.
Whenever you plan to start up again I'll be down to help
