dangit Cameron, you have me wanting to do a literal Journey map now ;3;
I thought the same thing. But no map can contain the power of that much 80s.
There's been a lot of... ah... "heated discussion" in our team over what the heck to do with Journey. It was the one we were really least prepared for. Natch.
This is going to involve a lot of clock watching, I can already tell.
I feel like any normal non themed Ctm map would fit into the category of journey. Simply because just playing through the map is a journey and I really can't think of anything to do with journey.

Not quite. Think more along the lines of an epic quest, a path the player has to travel along. Think linear is what I'm trying to say. While the maps don't all have to be purely linear, the concept of a journey will definitely come out more obviously if it is linear.
ideas,thoughts, journey..... Huh.... im still going to be thinking by Sunday ; - ;
Don't think too hard about it. Because of how broad the theme is, you've got a lot of freedom with what you create. Pretty much anything goes, so long as there's some kind of "journey" included. If you'd like, you could even take inspiration from one of the runner-up themes, (Opposites Collide, Apocalypse, Insanity) whatever one appeals to you the most.

I... I actually think I know what I want to do... :3
Are we allowed to plan on like a piece of paper or in a test world to like write ideas? and plan what you want?
Also is world painter allowed?

Test world? I need specifics on this. Can we make area sketches, or what? Or is it just for checking mechanics.
You can prepare sketches, small schematics (spawners), and anything else that's short of creating a new world or directly making areas. If you build something larger than 5x5x5 and plan you use it in the map, that'd likely be frowned upon.
Also remember that this really is just for fun. The rules are there to make the event consistent across entries, not for you to stress about if you're not following them rigidly enough.

Journey is probably the hardest of the four finalist themes. I have no idea where all of the votes for it came from.
I might have contributed one; I can't remember...
While I do agree that Journey can be difficult to think of specific ideas for, I honestly think that Insanity is much more difficult. There would be a few options available (environmental insanity or the internal, mental kind of insanity), but I don't think I'd ever be able to come up with three distinct areas that fit that theme.
As Drago mentioned, it's not a bad idea to take inspiration from other themes. My plan for my own entry is inspired by Opposites Collide. And if you're struggling for ideas, you could probably pull off the theme with any linear map. One of the reasons I suggested Journey as a theme is the huge amount of freedom it comes with.
(As much as I hate to say it, I don't think I'll be able to make my 1000th post my entry. I know I'm going to post more than nine more times before Sunday night.)
Is it bad that all I can think of for journey theme is the game Journey by That Game Company? All I can think of is desert... for miles... and miles... forever...

Actually, and strangely, insanity was the one I was basically on the ball with. I'm kind of an H.P. Lovecraft fan.
The major issue, and the reason we had such a debate, was that we were having trouble squaring journeys, which are inherently linear and have a start and end in different places, with CTMs. The ones we've played generally aren't linear and, by nature, operate around a central hub, ending, in other words, in the place they start. Granted, that's just our experience, not representative of CTMs as a whole.
Not that I'm complaining. Challenge is good in a jam. But I think there is an inherent conflict in the idea of a Journey which at least increases the thought you have to put into the CTM. I suggested to my teammate that we should try doing some kind of Wagnerian "Ring Cycle" thing with the story. He wasn't impressed, I think.
EDIT:
Ah... um. BTW, since we're now past GMT Midnight, I'm assuming we're safe to start building right about now?

If you can make it interesting, go for it! Honestly I was thinking of the game Journey too, but Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons is another possible inspiration.
About three hours left in prep time for us East-Coasters! You guys feeling confident in whatever ideas you've got going?
If you need some good mapping music, I'd suggest these guys out. The music is meant as an alternative to the default soundtrack in Warframe (hence how I found these guys,) but it works quite well for mapping! The Shipyard and Gas City playlists in particular are stellar.

This is what I listen to when doing basically anything. Works really well for mapmaking, though, especially when dealing with aesthetics:
At the moment I'm pretty content with my ideas, but unfortunately I won't be able to start actual construction on the map until around 4:30 to 5 PM tomorrow due to school and a few other things. I haven't planned custom mobs quite yet, but since I'm refraining from making anything too elaborate (as I don't have a ton of experience with that stuff), I don't think that will take very long once I get to it.
That being said, I have a sheet of notebook paper front and back filled with area names and concepts, a general storyline, aesthetic ideas, resource distribution, vanilla mob locations, and other miscellaneous notes such as gamerules. So I'd consider myself prepared.

My mini-CTM map! It's a fun map, so play it!

You can start building once it's past midnight in your local timezone. If you're in GMT or later than it, you're definitely good to start building.
(but I probably wont get much done)
