This has been a long time coming, but here it finally is. The official announcement of my new minimap, Dreadsky Falls!
Myths are the one thing that keep the surviving inhabitants of Dreadsky sane. Myths of better times, paradise beyond the horizon, even myths of a hero soon coming to bring peace and hope to their shattered land. One myth, though, is held in reverence above the rest. It says that there is a place in Dreadsky so powerfully imbued with magic, that those who set their feet upon its ground inherit some of that magic. So powerful that even death can be reversed, and the deceased can walk amongst the living.
This is where you find yourself. The smell of magic stings your nose with its potency, but with each breath you take, you feel more powerful, more alive. You look up, past the tendrils of silken cloud above the glacial ice, and see a waterfall. No, the waterfall.
Dreadsky Falls.

Well there you go, a picture of the spawn for DsF, as well as the basic lore behind it. One of the unique aspects I'm going to be implementing into this map is the concept of "Shrines". Shrines will be structures the player will encounter every so often (planning one per area,) and will grant the player special powers. Not just simple things like infinite Speed I, mind you. But I'd rather save that aspect to be a surprise once you play the map. :3
In addition, I'm implementing a tiered loot system with attributes and a "common-ness" factor, like the loot from DsI. Leather armor equates to mage robes; they break quickly, have relatively poor enchants, but offer powerful attributes like health boosts and damage increases. Iron armor equates to a knight's suit; they will have decent enchantments and protect the user very well, but offer no bonus attributes. By having these tiers, the player can mix and match armors between types, and find a powerful balance between attribute bonuses and straight-up protection. Should make for a very interesting gameplay dynamic.
I was going to put up a list of area names, but I'm afraid I don't have time at the moment. That'll probably be up sometime tomorrow in my thread.
Thanks for reading, hope you enjoyed and are sufficiently hyped for Dreadsky Falls!
Picture looks really nice, but a bit small-scale. Having another layer of mountains behind the first one as well as more peaks instead of a flattish top would make it look more grand.

There ain't much left of the world these days. The gods have forsaken us, there's no denying that. But still you press on. For what? A chance to sift through the ashes one last time? The hope to one day be called a hero? Whatever your reason, you've got a lot of work to do. The corruption won't leave without a fight, so you better get started.

It's funny that you called it small-scale considering I was struggling to fit it all in at Far rnder distance...
But I get what you're saying. I was actually planning on making some larger mountains behind the fist ones, though that would be a bit time-consuming. I was also gonna put some trees on top of the existing peaks, to break it up and add some flair. Got pretty focused on just getting the picture out that I forgot to add the little details, thanks for reminding me though.

Wow, I really thought you managed to get those colors in default.. disappointed. I never liked how people try to make a map look better with shaders/textures/programs. It still looks cool, tho.
To an extent, I agree with this. You aren't the first person to notice that the community has been in a bit of a slump recently. As I said in my mega-post a few pages back, most communities fluctuate through stages of activity and inactivity. Maybe I'm just trying to be optimistic, but I think we're actually coming out of a stage of inactivity. If you haven't noticed, we've had at least three new people post here recently (Tikaro, statphantom, and Sylf_, really hoping you guys stick around btw. ) If we can direct more people this way, meaning people in the SH thread, people who post in smaller threads, etc., we'll hopefully see a boost in numbers and activity.
Now, I think part of the reason regulars from the SH thread haven't stuck around this thread as often as we'd like is because of the unfortunate reputation this place has. I don't know where it started, and I honestly don't care, but apparently this thread is infamous for being "immature." Now, my guess is our members have a lower average age than the regulars from the SH thread (or maybe not, can't be sure,) but this place is far less "immature" than it used to be.
I wish I could say I have a sure-fire method to kick-start the community back into action, but I don't, and I don't think anyone truly does. The best we can hope to do is keep making quality maps, pick up budding mapmakers where we can, and spread the news about CTM maps via youtube and twitter.
I'm on Drago's side about this. I've seen threads like this wave in activity, and I believe that if we will continue doing what we can, the thread is going to blossom again, (sadly I haven't been here to see what it was before). So I'm definitely gonna continue posting screenshots/ideas/stuff here, as I really like the atmosphere of this place.
In fact, why not post something right now?
Here you go:
With the minimap I'm making alongside SP #02, I'm trying to head towards dungeon-like environment, mixed with a feeling of being in a very old castle, and I can say that I'm quite happy with the work I've done so far. It might lack a bit of block variation, so I'll think about adding some cracked bricks into it(there is a reason I'm not adding mossy ones).
Also, another thing I want to achieve is enjoyment of exploration. The playable part of the map is really small is terms of dimensions, (~280x280x256 box), so I want to give player as much things to do as possible, so he'll not rush through the map in 30 minutes, (I'm not saying that short maps in terms of time are bad, this is just not what i'm heading for). Most of the stuff I did at the moment has some sort of a twist to it (for ex.that entrance on the screenshot - first time you'll visit that through the gates, but after that you might find a way to get to the upper part and try to explore that). Obviously, as it's a CTM, you could just pillar up, but who can guarantee that you'll see something like this at the first glance?
Okay, I talked for quite a bit, so let's stop at that point, as I might spoil some things if I'll continue.
Its a shame stained glass renders different- I could of had a lot more fun here otherwise
At least clear glass still looks normal for now

A mighty machine built within the wake
Of a long dead dream, little demon awake
The citizens sleep, never quite knowing when
The device will reawaken, hungry again.
Just because some people don't post here very often, does not mean that the CTM genre is dying. I've spent a lot of time working on my map, but I didn't want to post screenshots every few days.
If anyone is interested, my new map will be out in 1 - 3 days. It's pretty big and should keep you busy for a while.
You can click on the banner in my signature for more information.
Thanks again for letting me beta! Everyone here should really look forward to the map, it's just awesome!

I've been on a break from actually playing CTM maps, but this looks phenomenal! This will probably get me back into them.
And I've also been pushed back into mapping, so that's great. I'm putting the big map I'm working on at the moment to the side so I can finish a project consisting of 3 different mini maps and a central hub. I'm really looking forward to it.

*snip*
1-3 days?
You, sir, have just boosted my mood. By a lot. I thought it was going to be another week or two at least.
And on another topic, I would join the screenshot rampage, but I don't have anything to show considering that it's been at least a month since I've last worked on my map. I plan on picking it up again fairly soon, but due to a wiping of my hard drive I have to reinstall all my mapmaking tools and mods, and I'm really not looking forward to doing that.
Actually, I wanted to do something similar, not necessarily a mini-map, but a map based around the idea of being in a castle/ on the castle walls. If anyone has ever played Diablo III, you'll know what I'm talking about when I say: Bastion's Keep. Really cool place, you can google it if you want anyway. Another good reference would be the Battle of Pelennor Fields (aka Minas Tirith) from Lotr.
Uh...
...I just got an (IMHO) awesome idea for a map. Basically: Minas Tirith, only it's in an alternate reality where Sauron's forces win the Battle of Pelennor Fields. The city has turned evil, and it's up to you to "fix" the alternate reality and... I dunno, reverse time or something? Anyway, each of the "tiers" of the city would be a step up in difficulty, and each one would have a couple of wool dungeons.
...You know what, I actually want to make this. I REALLY want to make this.
Knowing myself, I'm never going to finish a project of this scale; anyone want to help out? (I don't mean to make this a ProjectCTM/Pantheon-type thing where a bunch of people each make a dungeon and then they're all mashed together; I want this to be a thing where a few people work on all the different parts.) Is there anyone else who's into the LotR mythos and/or relatively active and interested?
Alright, seeing as people are focusing on the community, I've decided to compile a list of what I consider to be currently active members. Maybe I'll do it again next week!
