Well, I mentioned a bit of this a few days ago, but I've (finally, stupid real life) made a third Let's Analyze discussing the role of items in maps. While most CtMs have some awesome custom items, I tried to illustrate specifically why we might use different types of items in different locations. I'd especially love to hear comments from people who disagree with me, since I do love a good game design discussion
p.s. If there's a topic you'd like to see covered please ask! I've got two episodes planned, gameplay vs aesthetic design and custom mobs, but I'm totally up for suggestions/requests on any map making topics!
Good day everyone, does anybody know if there is a worldedit-like mod for 1.8?
I'd recommended McEdit. If you use the fork, we've got quite a few new functions, and within a few days we should have even more nice functions. Erode brush now does what it should, block models are becoming an actual thing, and we have got %age brushes too.
Dang it. Do you maybe know other programs like that? Or are map makers so screwed that they need to place all the random loot in the chests by themselves?
Yup, we pretty much all do. It really isn't all that tedious, and anyway if you use random loot you need to go through it by hand to see that it's balanced and whatnot.
@Trinis I would probably stay away from paths and ruins if you're going for an area the spiders created themselves. I'd make more natural objects to catch the players attention, like piles of eggs or things like that. Or little areas where people got trapped and had to hold out. Both of those would catch the players attention, draw them towards the area, and provide opportunities to place loot.
and also @NewRuski, spawners don't normally help with basic aesthetics, which is what I think Trinis was asking about.
So I built a thing, considering getting back into mapping. Thoughts? (Also what type of map should I make? Linear branching, open world, open sky, floating islands, cave, etc.?)
Personally, I'd like to see you do one of the lesser done genres (AKA Not the normal cave linear/linea branching). IMHO one of the ones with "open" in them seem good, as they're al rarer than the normal. Also even though I know you've been here for a long while, lemme say this: try make a small/mini map first. That way if you need to scrap it it's less painful and you can learn faster from your errors.
Time for a Community Question:
Are you having your testworld for trying out stuff and derping with mechanics just a plain superflat-world or do you have something different?
For me, my main testworld is a spawn I've created for a server which went down( ), so I have some nice buildings in the background.
I don't even do that much with them, they're just there so that i keep my sanity - All the same or even chessboard-pattern drives me crazy
I usually test/build something, then give up and make another world for building/testing.
I end up with 10 worlds and I delete 9 of them.

And so, as all stories have their bitter parts, it seems mine has reached yet another.
As some of you (or none) have noticed, I haven’t been too active on this thread during the last few weeks. This has been because in what was a pretty sudden manner, I got next to no free time to do mapmaking, or at least what would be considered enough time to get some progress done. As it is, the IRL things that now take up most of my time aren’t things that I can wait until I’m done with them, and I can’t just stop doing them.
Because of this, I have decided to put my map on hiatus. It does not seem that any time soon I’ll be getting enough free time to work on it without some sort of miracle, and I don’t want to just have it be constantly at the back of my mind. It’ll be in this state until the 21st of February (which will be 1 year since I completed the very first version of my map) which if until then nothing substantial happens/changes, I’ll give out a copy of it to a few people whom I have grown fond of in this community, and I’ll become a retired CTM mapmaker.
Now to be clear, I’m not leaving this community. I still have enough time to give feedback and whatnot here, and do less time intensive things such as test maps and possibly stream them here and there (more on that later this week). As for things such as strawberry jams…those still stand as a big maybe.
It greatly saddens me to do this, but I think that for now it’s for the best. I’ll probably sometime this week do a large dev update sorta thing on my thread with all that I’ve done with the map so far, and I’ll also edit my thread to say that my map is currently on hiatus.

I have 3 testworlds, a blockstate one (the debug world), a vanilla terrain one, mostly for terrain interaction and general derping, and a superflat one for anything that has to do with commands or redstone.

Sad to hear that fren :[
ANYHIZZLE, I TOOK SOME ADVICE Y'ALL SCRUBS GAVE ME AND I'VE STARTED WORK ON A MINIMAP
first off
and also the spawn island
n yea ik it looks p much xactly like my other minimap but w/e idrk
oh n @CQ i have like one test world bc i dont really do redstone n stuff i just build things n stuf
Well, IMHO, what I'm doing is sorta something in between both of those. As I said, if a miracle happens by then and I get the time to work on it, I will continue, but if by then nothing happens, even if I was to continue the map it would be quite outdated. Still, people would be able to use my area's (or parts of them at least) and my map would serve a purpose, and in a certain sense, it'll still get to see the light of day. Then if I do find the time and inspiration to continue after that, I'll probably just pull a Xekaj and start anew. Thanks for your conselations Skeeto
So life's been hectic for me, and as some of you may remember that caused me to put all my maps on hiatus a while ago. They are still on hiatus, sadly, but I thought i'd leave a little post to let everyone know i am in fact not dead and i'mlike here andstuff so kthxbai....

Make use of space, and add guidance. Make the area have a direction, add goals and stuff to do. It's just an emtpy template at the moment.

They're very orange.
I dunno, it look purdy.
And do linear. I need somebody to make my decisions for me.
My mini-CTM map! It's a fun map, so play it!
