Think Dark Souls + Minecraft. That's the CTM experience in a nutshell for ya. Atleast that's what it used to be, perhaps not so much anymore. I'd go as far as to say that Pantheon is the last good example of a CTM map that represents the original survival romhack-hard difficulty that used to be associated with CTM.
What saddens me is that with how big of a p*ssing contest CTM mapmaking has become, nobody is daring enough to put time and effort into a what I suppose one could call a "traditional" CTM map. It would just get downboated so hard by people expecting something entirely different.
I think my map comes close. It's not 100% traditional, but there isn't a lot of gimmicky stuff. There are some areas that are a bit gimmicky, and I might, might (!) redo those. It depends on when 1.8 comes out and stuff...
Well I have been lurking and going through some of the previous pages and I have noticed many who have voiced that they disliked random loot chests, I personally can't help but disagree. I find they add a lot more variety for obvious reasons and also it adds a new element to each map that utilizes it. It forces you to scan chests and prioritize and weigh in what's worth taking and whats not and that by itself I find fun. A chest is no longer "oh da pwetty loot" *grab everything*, it require more thinking.
I also can't really explain why but I find conquering a dungeon and then backtracking and collecting all my hard earned loot unsure of its quality fascinating. Another point I would like to add to my argument is that random loot provides more variety for not only chest but in the gear that you wear. Due to random loot chests in Inferno Mines I found myself wearing tons of types of gear with tons of different types of enchantments. Questions always appeared in my head about various situations like whether to use this protection 3 unbreaking 3 leather pants or these iron pants and things along those lines.
Well although I probably worded my opinion horribly I hope people can understand what I am trying to point.
Now on to another subject, I looked through what was everyone favorite map by vechs and no one mentioned Nightmare Realm. I found that my favorite vechs maps were Legendary, Nightmare Realm and Waking Up but Nightmare Realm in my mind was the most unique of the three it also brought a new factor with the rather low quantity of food he gave in the early stages of the map and focused heavily on a hellish theme from the beginning of the map to the end and I had never seen anything like it before..
So here my question: Why no love for Nightmare Realm?
See, what you like isn't Random Loot. It's Noise Loot. You like loot that could possibly be useful, but might not be. You like some of the useless or outdated stuff in chests that just adds population and feel to the chest. But that's not random loot. There's no personal touch. There's no choice, just a random roll of a dice. It's not the feeling you're looking for, but you seem to just seek the choice of items you could take, but may not be the best, rather than every chest having nice things.
I also think you might like my minimap, as I have lots of chests with Noise Loot
As for Nightmare Realm - because it's not hard, as advertised. It's a very awkward map now, poorly balanced, with less than strong areas, and lots of issues throughout even on release. It's decent, but I've never really found it as a top tier Vechs map.
So, I wanted to do a little experiment. Can you guys give me some feedback on this?
Can't see it. Imgur still blocked.
Same thing for Ragrik.
============================
And for the whole command block thing...
While my map have some command block contraptions in it, I don't think that today's ctm maps needs to have heavy command block/redstone mechanics in it, or a never before seen mechanics in it.
I think if you're not that good at creating unique gameplay or command blocks gimmicks, just screw those things and just made your creations just the way you're comfortable with it.
I actually interested by ctm solely by it's aesthetics, and I want to make ctm maps because I like to make beautiful areas, yet people could do something in it (and see other people rage ). The command block thing will be just an icing on top of most of my map.

Nightmare realms was one of my favourite vechs maps:
It was open world, which is significantly tougher to make than linear branching
It was sky world based, which is also difficult to make
Despite these things the aesthetics were very good for a vechs map:
The bedrock stalagmites looked very ominous and nice
The netherrack tendrils also looked great
The map was fairly balanced, starting off very difficult though still giving you a chance and then it had a fair difficulty increase
Also some very unique areas as well as great rewards for exploration
I would give it top 5 vechs maps, and maybe even top 3

While I do agree with these things, I don't think some people enjoy the harsh difficulty this map have. I mean yeah, the aesthetics looks great. And it has a unique mechanic which if you don't have a bed spawn, you lose.
But some areas could be really rough, for instance, the cave with crap ton of silverfish and spiders, only to find out that the fleecy box is inside a bedrock box and you don't have any ender pearls and you can't find a way to get the wool and you die when trying to go back (I'm sorry, I'm having bad memories. *sniff*)
And also, the bridging to areas across the void could be a thing that not many people enjoy.
So if you think this map is great or not, it's your opinion. Some people like hard, punishing map, some people like a light difficulty map with a couple punch to it.

Well I'm back, if you could even tell I was gone. I basically starved myself for 30 hours starting yesterday as a part of a fundraiser to feed malnourished children in third-world countries. /endofdragoisagoodperson
Point is I'm pretty out of it right now, likely won't be doing much other than watching Doctor Who tonight and tomorrow. I did skim over the posts on the past few pages though. It's interesting stuff you're writing about, a bit more emotion-infused than normal, but fine.

My eyes are literally burning right now because I am so tired, but for some reason I'm sitting here replying to you instead. Though granted, I'm finishing listening to a new CD, but still.
Well, apparently today my ISP just decided to block imgur (and reddit). So I can't see any screenshots by you guys. "Yay!".
And I just done making an area and I'm about to ask for feed backs, but once again, imgur problem.
I am using postimage.org to post this image (lol), but if anyone knows a better alternate image hosting site, please tell me.
I'd get in touch with your ISP and ask them why they blocked those sites.
(This is depending on where you live, if you don't live in a MEDC it may be censorship related.)
Until then, there actually isn't a very good replacement for imgur. Most other image hosting sites delete older images, block access to an image if traffic to it is too low or too high, or have limitations on uploads :/

Oh you poor thing
in all srsnss though, good job for devoting your stomach to a worthy cause! *pats back*

The difficulty of creation should not be taken into account when judging a map. Just because it took me 1,000,000 hours to make something doesn't automatically make it good.
And really, an Open World map with positive block placement isn't TOO difficult. People simply shy away from Open World now because of a key flaw it has in that the difficulty curve can easily be broken.

I'm pretty new to this community, but I can give you my perspective, though its pretty tunnel visioned having only really played a few maps, and never completed one (I'm heavily working on Insomnia by Heliceo ATM).
So I'm in that phase (if there actually is one) of lurking through the communities of old games I've played to just.. idk ask questions or talk a bit I guess?
Actually, I do have a few questions so here you go:
How is the CTM Community? Has it turned into a complete pile of crap like a lot of communities have turned into (ahemreddit) or is it still this wonderful paradise of trees and crap, or both? As far as I can tell its pretty good. I wouldn't say theres anything special about it, but thopse who are heavily in it and recognized are all good people as far as I can tell.
Are there good maps or even better maps than before or has everyone just lost touch and started producing crap? (heh) I would say there are, comparing the map I'm playing now (Insomnia) to, say, the first ones I've seen LP's of. Mostly this seems to be because of implementing new minecraft feutures such as command blocks, at least in Insomnia. For example, on area in insomnia forces you to have extreme hunger all the time, and in order to keep full you have to bhunt wild wolves that drop satiation onto you when they die.EDIT: I realize some may not like this. By this I didn't neccesarily mean "better", more like "innovative gameplay". Another example is an area thats based entirely around you having speed and jump boost the entire time. Also, I realize this isn't neccesarily the only way, and I too would like to see others. This is just what I know of.
Is it the same people that are still here or are there actually new people coming to the community? (specifically I guess this thread) Well, I'm a new person. . TBH I think this more depends on how fast the minecraft community itself is growoing, and it seems to be slowing down. This means the same shouold be going for CTMs. I think most who would get into it have.
Do people still mass upvote something because others do? (im such a hypocrite, actually this happens in about every community that has a upvote/downvote of some sort doesn't it?) Can't say for sure here, though if they do, there aren't enough to have broken double digits while I've seen replies here, and I come back at least every other two days or so.
I have more questions in my head but I'd rather not say them.. hur.
pls gib me ur opinions I wanna kno if u guys sux or not im guessing not and u guys rok still
