I want to modify the skyblock survival map to bring up to 1.4. This won't be released publicly so I am not trying to rip off the creator. However, I need some help doing basic things.
1. How did the map maker make sand float in the air? I might want to expand on the island.
2. How can I set no blocks to generate. I remember Sethbling discussing editing an nbt tag to make the world not generate, but how do I do this
3. I want to set a region of the nether to be a nether fortress so wither skeletons can spawn. Is there any way to do this?
4. How does the nether portal always link to the same area in the nether. Will adding new structures effect this?

A bit of elaboration from what I know:
1) MCEdit, without a doubt. Any illegally placed blocks will remain illegally placed until someone touches them (which is why you have to "catch" the sand island or else it falls into the void when you touch it).
2) With the 1.4 update, I'd recommend starting a custom flat world with no terrain at all. Meaning you make a superflat with the custom terrain of: 0 (Air). This way you don't have to delete anything and new chunks will also be empty. Then go in with MCEdit and add in your island.
3) Your best bet, probably, is to keep generating/searching through the nether until you find a fortress. The Nether is one giant biome and fortresses randomly spawn in it. If you needed just the fortress, you could copy it out in MCEdit, remove the netherrack, lava, and soul sand (replace with air) which would leave you with just the nether fortress bricks. Keep in mind that you will have to manually empty the nether no matter what you do, there isn't a "superflat nether" option.
4) Nether portals search out the closest 'otherworld' nether portal in a proximity of 256 blocks, I think (maybe the nr is different). Anyway, the first pair connects and they are the 'center'. If you make any other portals, they will connect to the same nether portal. If you want to make multiple pairs of portals, it gets more complicated. For that, check the minecraft wiki on the workings of nether portals.
When you travel through a portal it looks for another portal within 128 blocks, not 256. If it doesn't find one it generates one in the nearest available spot a portal will fit.
Setting up multiple portal pairs is not difficult at all (from a logic standpoint). If you're traveling from a portal in the overworld and want to know where to build a portal in the nether for reliable two way transportation just divide the X&Z coordinates of the overworld portal by 8. That is where to build your corresponding nether side portal. This is the most likely direction to have issues. Usually if you build a portal from the Nether side it will create a portal in the overworld that will almost alway link up both ways without any issues.
I know exactly how setting up portal pairs works. Yeah, I don't have coördinates in-game, so I have to do everything by 'counting blocks' and , and I never know where the north is when I'm in the nether.
But that's just me being an idiot for not using any tools XD
You can see coordinates using the F3 debug screen. If you don't like to use that, then yeah that's going to be difficult to get portals that work right. If I were you I would make an exception in this case. That's about the only thing I use F3 for.

Thanks in advance.

Here is a fairly detailed explanation of portals:

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
