With the forums shutting down I figured I'd get this project in before everything got nuked forever. Basically I've made what I believe to be the largest public MC Earth map that's pre-made and doesn't make use of the 1:95 scale mod.
Pics:
Manhattan / Mouth of the Hudson (obscured by trees). (31744, 255, 14840)
Rocky Mountains (18752 123 13159)
San Francisco ( 17271 123 15817)
Amazon River (37377 67 27706)
Italy (Near Rome) (57696 73 14440)
Q/A:
Q: What's up with the weird scale?
Technical limitations. I tried to do a 1:200 scale but almost immediately ran out of memory (64 gigs on my server rack which was used to compile this). 1:250 was doable iirc but after generation was completely un-editable due to intense ram usage. The largest I got it to do was about half way between 1:300 and 1:400 but I'm not entirely sure what the fraction would be as it doesn't go cleanly into a 1/X format.
Q: Can you play survival on this map?
Yes. The entire world (except under the ocean for optimization reasons) has full ore generation and in some regions has increased spawn rates for certain ores. Obviously due to the entire world being pre-generated though some things like the end are not accessible without spawning in a portal. Also most climates except for mesas unfortunately exist in some capacity.
Q: X area of the world is underwater!
Unfortunately Nasa's world heightmaps aren't high enough resolution to differentiate certain low altitude regions from sea level and as such means some low lying areas like New Jersey, Delaware, parts of GB, and a lot of upper europe are partially under water. Due to the hardware strain of dealing with an 88-ish gb map it wasn't really practical for me to go through and fix all of these. The only exception is florida as it's a huge landmass that would've been entirely under water.
Q: How big is this map?
88GB uncompressed, 23 compressed from a filesize perspective. Map dimensions wise it's about 53k blocks N/S and 108k blocks E/W.
Q: Will this nuke my computer?
Assuming you have the storage it should run like any other normal MC map.
Q: There's biomes in the wrong places!
Due to the fact that World Painter only allows 16 colors in annotations, my biome map kinda got color compressed leading to some wonky biome setups. For the most part it should be fairly accurate though.
Q: Can you do X? Can you change x?
Nope. It takes somewhere around 8-12 hours to compile this into a map depending on the settings and I've spent the better part of 2 weeks solid doing work on this (each major map change takes ~20+ minutes to apply in world painter and there's a lot of changes I needed to do) and I just wanted to get this out before the forums croaked.
Q: I spawn in the ocean, can you fix that?
I would but unfortunately Minecraft likes to ignore my spawn pos setting on compile. You're supposed to spawn in NYC but it forces you somewhere into the Bering Strait.

Headsup! Make sure you read the "PLEASE READ" document before attempting to download it. I had to split the zip and the sites its hosted on due to it's crazy big filesize. Also, a word of warning: I have no idea what sort of crazy stuff might happen if you try to load this pre-1.0 release. If I get some time I might release a beta edition of it at a later date.
This is awesome, why this dosen't have more comments? Like seriously, this is cool. I haven't seen anything like this in so big scale, keep up the good work!
I'll test it out when my download finishes, this is so big, I'm sure that my computer can handle it, I know this wont nuke my computer, so I'm fine.

Quite interesting. What could help is editing the heightmap in photoshop to make a more accurate shorelines.
108,000 by 54,000 world map, exact map scale: 1:371.064 scale map
also the first 2 images you can see where the dirt changes to sand underwater so you do see the whole coastline
