I friggin' cheated. I saw that bedrock wall and I went Open to LAN and enabled cheats, so I could break out and see if the rest of the Nether was there. Then I put it back and went back to playing without cheating.
There is a way to break bedrock, you just have to enderpearl above it first. You need a tnt minecart. Youtube it, I can't remember it now...
You can break out through the bedrock above the Nether with enderpearls and a ladder, but it's not going to help in this case, since there's no way back down outside the box. And there's very little chance of TNT minecarts in this skyblock game.
But back to squid:
Playing a different skyblock-type map, I dropped acolumn of water from about y=128. When it got down below sea level, it started spawning squids.
So there seems to be something wrong with squid spawns in this map. I'm playing 3.04, for reference.
I'd really like to know if anyone else has gotten ANY squid to spawn anywhere?

I think you are right, I have built a squid farm, at the appropriate Y level and and went afk for about 2 hours now and havent gotten anything to spawn yet
Could anyone tell me how I would go about editing the file or whatever to bring the islands closer to the spawn island?? I messed up an island, and would like to start again, but I can't bear the thought of going out 5000 blocks again -_-... I've never edited a file, so is that a complicated thing to change??
Also, has anyone had problems getting friendly animals to spawn?? It could be that I just haven't spent enough time away from my grass section, but just figured I'd ask.

You could try to use mc edit on it, it isn't updated to 1.10 yet but I dont think it will make a difference because the things added in 1.10 aren't really in skyblock. You should also try to find a video on how to use it because it isn't exactly the most user friendly thing when you first start using it. Vechs made a tutorial video a long time ago that was pretty good and I doubt the interface has changed all that much.
As far as animals go, I believe you need like a 5x8 section of grass or something like that and need to be at least 25 blocks away from it and just wait. It took awhile for mine to spawn in but I eventually got some. I am not sure if this is actually that but I had a hard time getting new animals to spawn in there if I already had some. I had to take the other animals out of the area and fence them in somewhere else before I would get new ones to spawn. It took forever for me to get a second cow for breading lol.
Thank you for the tips on the animals!! =D - I'd realized that at first, after breaking down my main island for dirt, that I'd placed grass blocks below level 64, so I'm sure that was my original issue, but I'm still trying to get my first group of animals to spawn now that I've moved them.
Unfortunately I have 0 skills for that stuff, (not to mention terrible luck getting viruses and crap, so I's probably be trying to download the wrong thing anyway. So I'll likely just have to wait (and hope) the map dev will update the map and make the islands closer...
I just had to go and mess up my sand/cactus island.... T_T
Mc edit is very safe. I wouldn't have suggested it if it wasn't a safe program, site is http://www.mcedit.net/ Guaranteed 100% virus free
It really isn't that hard to get a grip on and once you put your sand island back in you may not ever use it again, unless you decide to become a map creator yourself.
This is a decent tutorial that should be relevant still from Mindcracks' SethBling.

Alright, sorry I haven't been replying... But the map has been updated! The islands are much closer now (200 blocks instead of 1000). I tried to find a way to make sure no progress should be lost, but I found that hard to do. I used MCEdit to move the islands closer, so anyone who wants to save progress can do that as well. (or you can just cheat in the items you got on the old map into version 3.05...)

That's awesome, I'm so excited! 200 will make it much easier on a restart, THANK YOU! XD
HeroWorkbrine, could you respond to the issue of squids not spawning? We have waited for hours upon hours for them to spawn (sometimes leaving it up overnight), making sure our homemade lake is at the right altitude, but no squid. It should be swarming with squid. Also, we haven't had any Mooshrooms spawn on the Mushroom Island. We have added dirt to make a larger spawn area and still no Mooshrooms. Has something been done to prevent spawning of certain kinds of mobs, or to reduce the spawn rate?

To be honest, I don't know why passive mobs don't spawn. Neither animals nor squids spawn... I've searched around to no avail and all requirements for mob spawning are met, I think.

Glad to see you were able to change it, but I am just either just going to spawn in the blocks to make my looooong paths because I have put tooo much time into this already to start over lol. The mcedit idea is a good one to tho but the one thing I think may keep me from it is I was going to try and get a cat and dog to spawn in the jungle/taiga biomes and I'm not sure how to change biomes in mcedit.
Lol I just want to say, after all the cobblestone grinding I have been doing on this, a friend and I decided we should start a Cobblehaters map just because we are so tired of touching the stuff. It has been fun and a def challenge.
I was trying to spawn cows and sheep and stuff on a huge section of grass (basically all the dirt I'd started with on my main island) and still nothing would spawn. I had everything right, 24 blocks from spawn island, above level 64, plenty of light, and still nothing. So I just had to spawn in 2 cows, 2 sheep and 2 chickens, so I could breed and get more. The next in game morning, there were 3 pigs, an extra chicken and a horse with the ones I'd spawned. I know the spawn rate increases once you have a few animals there already, I just don't know why nothing was spawning at first!
i also got a couple of villagers, and they're breeding just fine once I added enough doors. But I'm also having trouble getting squid to spawn in a giant lake I made...
You just weren't waiting long enough when it came to the animals, sometimes it can take forever, sometimes it doesn't. Direct sunlight helps the chances a lot. I had to just leave the game running when I went to sleep and when I came back later they had finally started spawning. I got a ton of horses, chickens and pigs but cows were the hardest thing for me to be able to get a pair of. LOL I wish I had gotten a donkey at some point because it would have made carting things around my HUGE villager/iron farm much easier.
Did you cure your villagers or spawn them in because regular villagers don't just naturally spawn..
I too am having trouble getting squid. Idk if the new update has fixed the problem as I haven't tried the new update the map maker made yet because I am not going to start over after everything I have already built. One suggestion I have tho if you need ink for dye, you can fish for it. I know that doesn't help with the achievement of building a squid farm but, that is a solution for dye at least
I'd cured 2 villagers - I WISH they would just spawn in a man-made village!
And I didn't know I could fish for ink?! I actually only wanted the ink for dye, and for making nametags to keep my villagers organized!! Although that may not even be possible? Not sure. Thanks for the tip!

You most def can fish ink sacs, it counts as junk items and I have caught plenty.
Also, you cant use name tags or leads on villagers YET. It is supposed to be something they are adding in 1.11 though FINALLY!!!!!! Same thing with horses. My advice is either build a wall around them or stick them in a boat if you want to keep cheap and easy track of them, since they cant leave the boat until you break it. Just push them in it and paddle it slowly away to a quiet corner of your village thats what I tend to do.
Lol in the words of Anderzel, CCCHHEEETTERRRR

You should get another one in the nether

Just tp them to you if they are falling out of the world and not spawning on solid ground. Just don't cheat anymore after that lol
