V2.0 is the first of the 1.9 updates to our classic survival maps. The combat changes in 1.9, the better mob AI, and the denser spawn rates all combine to make this challenge much harder in the first few days than the previous versions. I recommend working on base defenses immediately to keep from being overrun.

Enter a challenging new survival scenario that will make you appreciate every block! This map is in the minimalist survival genre but with a unique twist.
In a world where nuclear holocaust has left most of the earth flattened and desolate, stripped nearly to bedrock, You stumble upon a band of survivors that have miraculously staved off death by trapping themselves in the ruins of a nearby town within a radiation barrier that keeps the deadly radiation at bay. But now they are running out of food and hordes of strange monsters are appearing attacking at night from the land outside the barrier. Can you save the survivors and build a new colony in this desolate world? Can you rebuild the earth and make it grow green again?
The game counts the villagers in your colony each dawn and records the number of days you survive so you can keep track of your progress. Your goal is to build a successful colony in the desolate wastelands left by the nuclear war. Try not to lose all your surviving villagers.
On this map you’ll get to experience many kinds of gameplay. In the beginning the map has a skyblock feel with minimal resources and the need to establish as many renewable sources of blocks as possible. Starvation is also a very real threat the first few days, esp. on multiplayer. You’ll be stuck in the wood and stone age for a while while you try to secure sources of metal and farm mobs. But it gets better than other maps of the kind as the world continually grows.
Each day you survive the radiation outside grows safer and the shield expands each dawn bringing in new terrain to explore and search for supplies. The rate starts slow in the beginning (1 block/day), requiring you to play smart, and work hard to survive with the limited starting resources, but it will speed up over time. The survival supplies you glean as the worldborder expands enable you to continually make life better for you and the other colonists until you are literally able to rebuild the world around you and can obtain nearly every block and plant.
You’ll get to experience every kind of tech level in detail in this survival challenge but you’ll never be stuck. As time passes, the game rewards long-term survivors with more space and land to work with and you will learn to appreciate the items and supplies that are so easy to get on other maps but that take time and effort to obtain here.
Outside of the bedrock ruins of the town is a custom-generating wasteland terrain that I designed. If you survive long enough to reach it you'll find many blocks, including ores, generate renewably under the sand, but until then you'll have to survive on what you can manufacture or forage from the surrounding ruins and on what the survivors trade.
Final Battleground is a survival game for those that want an actual challenge to survive. Prepare to struggle the first few days. If you can survive till Day 10 things should begin to get better and the radiation shield expansion will accelerate.

**This update is designed for the 1.9 snapshots, however it will still still play in 1.8. There is one bug in 1.8 though where the 3 randomized survivor villagers are not created. This is due to a change in the data of spawn-eggs. If you play in 1.8 and only 1 villager appears give yourself 3 villager spawn eggs to begin and the map should work normally from that point forward.

11. Power up your gear with an Enchanting Table.
12. Keep your tools functional with an Anvil.
13. We need a home! Create a village including:
4 types of trees
5 types of vegetables
4 species of animals
maximum level enchanting table
a lake for fishing and swimming
fully furnished house.
14. Defeat the Ender Dragon and reclaim the Egg!
15. Defeat the Wither and craft a Beacon to inspire future generations.

I've tested this map on a singleplayer game and it can be deadly the first few days, especially if you are unused to the extra level of difficulty that came with 1.9 combat changes and AI. Be prepared to struggle.
Play however you want, but if you are struggling to survive more than a couple days without dying many times and losing the other survivors, I'd recommend my strategy, which was the fortify the house and build extra walls and defenses. I then worked in the safe space and used the days to slowly make the outside safer and reduce mob spawn rates.
If you want to know the mechanics they work like this. Every dawn the game reads the number of survivors and adds a day to your Days-Survived score. When the Days-Survived score goes up, the radiation shield expands to encompass new territory to work with.
radiation shield expansion rate:
Days 01-10: 1 blocks/day
Days 11-50: 2.5 blocks/day
Days 51+ : 6 blocks/day
There's a lot of useful stuff you can forage out in the ruins of the town so check every few days to see if there is anything new. I hid some surprises as well.

The fort I built to keep mobs out. I could've just slabbed or lit up all the spawning surfaces, but I kinda like the monster sieges each night so I just built a good wall and I let them keep coming and pick up the drops each morning.
Here's my very, very safe garden and bed. I just gained access to the nether and have started bringing back supplies from there.
My villagers in their house within the wall, under the floor. Virtually untouchable by those pesky sieging zombies.
A view of what's left of the ruined town and the wastelands beyond. I only have 1 water block but I'm working with a cauldron I just got to make a 2nd. In 1.9 you can bucket rainwater out of a cauldron which is a new change I made a requisite for the early 2nd water block. For now I'm just using the same one for everything from gardening to a double cobble gen under the floor. Those are the depressions on the right-side.

I've survived about 25 days so far and the base is proceeding great! I've got some bigger projects going on that I'll post when I complete them. Finally found the time and supplies to pillar up and check out the barrier machine that's been keeping me safe. Triadez left nice gifts.
The wastelands are getting close! My radiation shield has expanded about halfway there now as well and I've raided several houses and ruins I came across for supplies. I think I have enough raw diamonds I discovered for an enchant table now!
I found a survivor out in a house! This guy will be useful I think. I can finally expand my gardens now.

Horray for version 2.0! I played the first one to about 150 days and got basically everything I could without cheating, then cheated and made command blocks so I could get some more stuff "legitimately" (like more diamonds, but I had blacksmith villagers at that point) :P. I was about t restart to try doing some stuff differently and more efficiently, but now I'm looking forward to playing this tomorrow when I have more time.
Also, what are the main differences between this and the first one? (Aside from this one being in 1.9, and the sand wasteland)
- Added a few new ruined houses and features to the start area
- Added new custom-generation wasteland terrain outside the town (goes on forever)
- world is thicker to match average terrain height of 8, allows for some ore generation
- New nether with a real fortress
- Increased worldborder expansion rates after Day 10

You will like the new version as you can legitimately find all the ores out under the sand. It makes for a more fun longer-term game I think.

I feel like this should be a modpack like have ex nihlilo or any of those mods because those are great for these kinds of things.
yeah it very well might! Fell free to use a good one if you want for your experience. I was careful to allow you to be able to get most of the vanilla blocks and plants though so if you play it out it wouldn't be too limited. However, any good, holocaust-type modpack or texture pack would probably add to the feel!

The older version of the map was do-able. This isn't the final battleground, it's finally more slimes than your body has room for. I may just make a wall to keep out the slimes, made outta slimes. o.o
yeah it is. I've considered taking out the starting slime chunks, do you think that would make it more friendly? The changes to melee make the slimes tough to deal with. I dragged everything I could into a retaining wall area and holed up for a few days. That's how I made it. Spawns can be controlled by slabbing the obsidian pieces fyi.

I've been watching Brizol's vid and that helps. But thanks for the tips! I'm finally doing better after like a dozen or so tries. I had to be way more ruthless than usual like to cannibalize the landscape more. I think the new combat system is still something most of us are getting used to.
I really love your maps, but this has been quit the learning curve. I have cows, chickens, sheep, and a horse! I still owe you that wall of slime though, so I wont be slabbing obsidian just yet :-P
Ah that's awesome! Glad you got through those first few days! It gets a bit easier if you can make it to Day 10 as the worldborder rate increases after that point giving you a lot more space over time.
I also had to restart a couple times before I had a successful run, it is a bit of a learning curve lol. Do you have a cobble generator yet? I didn't see one in the compound.

It's a super simple cobble gen. I created for skyblock maps. (i don't know if anyone else makes them this way, but i'll give you a better look at it now with a farm attachment...cuz steve is getting sick of rotten flesh.)
And thanks for the encouragement. I won't lie. I got sick of slimes and took your advice and went super saiyan slab mode.

yep... I wonder what the chances of that is, I know it is a rare trade and that is also a pretty cheap price for it
The beginning of the map is very slow but once I get going it should be fine...
I am getting a decent amount of lag from all the zombies trying to path find into the base (to the villagers or me) making the beginning a little bit more hard.
yeah beginning is a tad rough. But if you work during the days you should be able to make things secure and use the mobs for loot and supplies. I usually found plenty to do, esp. after I got gardens going and cobble-generator and grass came into range.
I tried to simulate the way real radiation disperses so it starts slow with a confined space to work with but the shield expands at a greater rate later. After Day 10 it speeds up to 2.5b/day. So in the beginning it feels like a ground-based skyblock where you are busy making systems to make yoru life better, contain mobs, etc...but later you aren't so limited, esp. when the border expands out into the wastelands. I think brizol above is near there now!
In any case, enjoy the experience! Hope it's fun for you!

You will like the new version as you can legitimately find all the ores out under the sand. It makes for a more fun longer-term game I think.

I feel like this should be a modpack like have ex nihlilo or any of those mods because those are great for these kinds of things.
yeah it very well might! Fell free to use a good one if you want for your experience. I was careful to allow you to be able to get most of the vanilla blocks and plants though so if you play it out it wouldn't be too limited. However, any good, holocaust-type modpack or texture pack would probably add to the feel!

1.9 is hard.....
The older version of the map was do-able. This isn't the final battleground, it's finally more slimes than your body has room for. I may just make a wall to keep out the slimes, made outta slimes. o.o
yeah it is. I've considered taking out the starting slime chunks, do you think that would make it more friendly? The changes to melee make the slimes tough to deal with. I dragged everything I could into a retaining wall area and holed up for a few days. That's how I made it. Spawns can be controlled by slabbing the obsidian pieces fyi.

I've been watching Brizol's vid and that helps. But thanks for the tips! I'm finally doing better after like a dozen or so tries. I had to be way more ruthless than usual like to cannibalize the landscape more. I think the new combat system is still something most of us are getting used to.
I really love your maps, but this has been quit the learning curve. I have cows, chickens, sheep, and a horse! I still owe you that wall of slime though, so I wont be slabbing obsidian just yet :-P
Ah that's awesome! Glad you got through those first few days! It gets a bit easier if you can make it to Day 10 as the worldborder rate increases after that point giving you a lot more space over time.
I also had to restart a couple times before I had a successful run, it is a bit of a learning curve lol. Do you have a cobble generator yet? I didn't see one in the compound.

It's a super simple cobble gen. I created for skyblock maps. (i don't know if anyone else makes them this way, but i'll give you a better look at it now with a farm attachment...cuz steve is getting sick of rotten flesh.)
And thanks for the encouragement. I won't lie. I got sick of slimes and took your advice and went super saiyan slab mode.

yep... I wonder what the chances of that is, I know it is a rare trade and that is also a pretty cheap price for it
The beginning of the map is very slow but once I get going it should be fine...
I am getting a decent amount of lag from all the zombies trying to path find into the base (to the villagers or me) making the beginning a little bit more hard.
yeah beginning is a tad rough. But if you work during the days you should be able to make things secure and use the mobs for loot and supplies. I usually found plenty to do, esp. after I got gardens going and cobble-generator and grass came into range.
I tried to simulate the way real radiation disperses so it starts slow with a confined space to work with but the shield expands at a greater rate later. After Day 10 it speeds up to 2.5b/day. So in the beginning it feels like a ground-based skyblock where you are busy making systems to make yoru life better, contain mobs, etc...but later you aren't so limited, esp. when the border expands out into the wastelands. I think brizol above is near there now!
