The ultimate test of Vanilla mechanics knowledge and Survival skills, as minimalistic as possible: Only one chest in the middle of the world, filled with one grass block, one trapped chest, six blaze rods and twelve end portal frames.
You might think that it's impossible to play Minecraft like this. You don't even have saplings, water or enough blocks to build a mob farm! But I guarantee you, it is possible. You can go to the Nether, trade with villagers, get a beacon and full diamond armour and tools, fight the dragon and build a base with everything you need!
There are no foul tricks here or hidden command blocks, no data packs and no normal chunks a thousand blocks away, just an empty Overworld with this chest. The Nether and End are normal, but getting to them is hard.
Warning: Saying that this map is extremely hard would be an understatement. You'll likely have to reset many times and weeks might pass before you can even get into the Nether. If you just want a quick challenge for one afternoon, this map is not for you. If you haven't played Minecraft for very long yet or aren't aware of all the things you can find in the Minecraft wiki, this map is not for you. I know very much about this game and it still took me multiple days just to check if this map is even beatable. If you're looking for the hardest Minecraft map that isn't unfair or random, you have probably found it.
This map is multiplayer compatible. There's no real downside to playing with multiple people, except maybe that it gets a little crammed on top of the chest in the beginning. And that more than one person goes insane.
This map does not require any bugs to be used to beat it.
Note that the tag says "1.13", but this map only works in Minecraft 1.14. The 1.14 tag doesn't exist yet.
Setup
Create a superflat world with the preset code "air;taiga;", Creative mode and cheats turned on. Yes, the semicolon at the end of the preset is necessary.
You will fall out of the world, press F3+N twice to avoid that, then fly back up until the sky is no longer black.
Type into the chat: "/setblock ~ ~ ~ command_block"
Press the "use" button on the command block (default right click) to open its GUI.
Copy the command below (for example by selecting it and pressing Ctrl+C) and press Ctrl+V in the command block text field to insert it.
Click the "Needs redstone" button to change it to "Always active".
Click "Done". And you're actually done!
You can optionally change the difficulty by entering "/difficulty easy" or "/difficulty hard" into chat. If you want to keep your inventory when dying, you can enter "/gamerule keepInventory true" into chat. If you want to disable natural health regeneration ("UHC mode"), you can enter "/gamerule naturalRegeneration false" into chat. But I wouldn't recommend it.
This command creates a tower of command blocks above the original one which set the chest with all of its contents, teleport everyone to the top of it, set everyone's gamemode to survival, set the world's spawnpoint there, set the spawn radius to 0 (so that you always spawn on the top block of x=0 z=0 and not spread out, that avoids spawning in the void) and finally destroy themselves, so that there is really only one block left in the world: The chest.
There is also a workaround for MC-145113 included, because normal one-command creations don't work anymore in 1.14.0.
The concept is great, start with basically nothing and create a whole world ( love these type of maps ), but do you have a way to get other resources? For example, you listed a beacon as a challenge... but I don't see sand.

Oh yes, damn, I didn't think about the crafting.
Should I
- remove the challenge?
- change it to "get a nether star"?
- or put sand and three more lava buckets into the chest? That would add a bit of additional difficulty, because some people may think that they have enough ressources to create a rectangle portal.
Well, not sure if you want my honest opinion and not sure how much you know about survival or map making, so I am not sure what is appropriate to suggest for you. In my honest opinion, the way you have things set up ( from reading the description ), the map is going to get boring fast. I am more than willing to suggest what to improve, but only if you want that sort of thing. This is your map, so I don't want to offend you if that is not what you are looking for lol.
If you like the map the way it is, yeah, either remove the challenge or change to a nether star. The last option is impossible for the lava bucket option without a way of getting diamonds

Ah, yes, I forgot that you need the drop, not the block. I forget so many things.
Ok, well here is what I suggest. You want us to survive with as little as possible, yet it needs to be able to last for awhile. So, in order to do this, find out a way to make a shop system ( either with command blocks or with custom villagers ). For example, you just mined over a stack of cobble, so one of the shops, you can trade some cobble for some sand. With that sand, now you can possibly grow a cactus and then you can trade some cactus for another type of item. You also have the option to make custom mobs that have a chance of dropping items ( zombie dropping sand as an example ).
Another thing to keep in mind, it would be nice to have biomes (not just everything 1 biome) so that you can get other things to spawn ( such as ocelots and wolves ).
Hope this helps, have fun and good luck! I know map making isn't easy, but don't give up!

Very nice ideas, but the main topic of this map was to have only one block. Command blocks are also blocks, that's why it's important that even the automatic setup machine destroys itself afterwards. Even the button or lever which you press to activate it, pops off and falls into the void.
Biomes are very hard to make in an empty world, because there aren't biomes in flatland and else you can't empty the whole map without extreme lag, world save file sizes of multiple petabtes and, again: command BLOCKS.
There is a map that does start you with one block if you are interested in checking it out. The 1.8.3 version has a different shop than the picture shown. Le Bloc Divin
1. The beacon task is actually possible. You can get glass from villagers and it's possible to farm obsidian with portals. It's very time-consuming, but it's possible, even if you only have ressources for one portal. So I'll soon put the task back in.
2. As soon as 1.9 comes out, I'll update this as an even harder version. The main difficulty: You can now take water out of cauldrons with a water bucket. That changes much in my map: I won't give a single water bucket, since you can get water from rain in cauldrons. And I won't give iron for cauldrons, because you can get it from an iron farm. I'll have to look if the challenge is still fun this way, because an iron farm was a pretty late-game task before and now it's needed to get water, a basic ressource (cobblestone farm, etc.). But I'll investigate that as soon as there's a final release.
I made it even harder by removing one lava bucket (go to the nether to get it), combining grass and dirt blocks into grass blocks (use bone meal to get grass) and removing the potion of weakness (you can get it from witches).
Also I adjusted it to 1.9, which is the biggest change, by removing the water bucket. In 1.9, you can get water out of cauldrons by using a bucket. Since cauldrons fill up while rain, you can get water that way now. That means that the start becomes extremely hard, because to get a cauldron you need iron. How do you get iron? By building a iron golem farm with cured villagers. Before that you can't build a cobblestone generator, you can't go to the nether, everything is harder. I'll look later if the biome is one with rain, but I have much to do at the moment. Also the 1.9 command comes later. I don't use the new void preset, because there's no rain in it. I should check if the cauldrons fill up anyway. I wanted to remove the buckets, too, but sadly there's no way to get lava or portal items and you need iron for the cauldron anyway. So, here are the new contents and goals:
Contents:
64 oak leaves
64 grass blocks
10 lava buckets
12 end portal frames
That's all...
Goals:
Build fully automatic farms for chicken and 10 different plants*
Get the achievement "beaconator"
Make ultimate gear**
That's also all, because task #1 contains many smaller tasks, #2 and #3 are very hard and getting started is already hard enough. Both tasks contain a boss fight. If anyone knows more good tasks, please tell me!
*big mushrooms count as their small variants
**Armor, weapons, tools, all diamond, enchanted, ... You can leave single things away, if you e.g. don't like bows or frost walker or whatever. Spade and hoe are not possible in diamond, make them out of iron.
I'll update the first post as soon as I have the command ready.
It's possible to play this map in UHC mode, although I don't recommend it. If you do and send me a video proof, you will be my hero.
Since this map got so hard now, if anyone wants tips (e.g. "What plants do you mean?"), just ask here and I'll answer.
I've now updated the post to 1.9 and also changed a few things that I didn't find good anymore (for example I restructured the automatic part of the setup).
I've turned the beacon challenge into a general achievement challenge and listed all achievements that aren't possible. The 10 plants and chicken challenge is now a 10 plants and 20 mobs challenge, to also make this challenge more general and more... challenging... Wow.
The one-commands now use the 1.9 command blocks and there's an UHC version (careful, this one is extremely hard, because the start of the game is very hard anyway).
I've changed "click" into "right click" for placing the button/lever. How did noone remind me of that? How did I not think of that? Anyway, I've now generalized it, since I want it to be as easy understandable for as many people as possible.
Trailer and Let's Play will follow as soon as I have even more time than I have now. (I have a little break, but final exams aren't over yet.)
Note to self: When I update this to 1.13, I will change the biome to "mountains" (formerly "extreme hills"), because then you can get water at low heights (rain in cauldron) and ice at high heights. That's a really nice solution to this dilemma.
The map was updated to 1.13! No content changes, except that I fixed the biome (in mountains you can get ice and liquid water, it rains and mobs spawn), but I changed a lot about the post:
I removed the challenges, they were pretty arbitrary anyway.
There's only one setup command now, they barely differed before anyway. You can set difficulty, keepInventory and naturalRegeneration yourself, if you want to, just like any other custom rule you want to set.
The setup is simplified in general, for example you can auto-activate a command block by setting it to "always active" while having the GUI open, then just pressing "done" completes the setup. And you don't have to pay attention to where you execute the command anymore, it's in a fixed location. As long as you're near 0 0, that's enough.
And a lot of other smaller changes, grammar, clearing up, formatting, etc.
Warning: I do not recommend updating to 1.13 yet, see this post. But as soon as 1.14 gets to a point where it's usable, I do recommend updating and my map is ready for it already. For 1.12, just use the 1.9 version in the post history, I think it still works (not tested).
Edit: You don't even have to fly near 0 0, you always spawn at 8 0 8 in an empty superflat world.
Edit2: I doubled the amount of dark oak leaves so that you have to reset the map less. With 64 leave blocks, you get an average of 3.2 leaves, but you need 4. By doubling the amount of leaves, the probability of a failure just from the initial leave drops goes down from 60% to 11%.
Edit3: You also have to be really fast in the beginning now, because after 70 minutes, phantoms begin to spawn.
1.14 adds the "wandering trader", which allows for getting renewable dirt in SkyBlock. I've researched a lot whether it's possible to just leave out the grass blocks without replacement, but sadly without water and without solid blocks, nothing can spawn, so the only new block you can get is saplings. I've also considered just putting a single unstable TNT block into the chest, but it would be annoying to have no grass at all during the entire gameplay on the map. So I'll just reduce the number of grass blocks to 1 for 1.14. You could use that to grow trees, but then it would very likely turn into dirt at some point. So you'll have to use the grass block as a spawning platform, which makes the beginning extremely slow. You'll have to do something against those phantoms…
I just noticed that nobody apart from me can see the edit history of the post. So I guess if someone wants the 1.8 version or the 1.9 version, just ask me and I'll look for and copy it.
I updated the post to 1.14.0 now. I don't recommend anyone to upgrade yet, because 1.14.0 contains many critical bugs, but hopefully 1.14.1 addresses those. And it was so much fun to make the map even more diabolically evil that I did it now already. 😈
The map was quite challenging in 1.8, then it became very hard in 1.9 and now it is absolutely ridiculously evil in 1.14. So many things came together perfectly that it almost appears to me as if Minecraft, especially 1.14, was made for SkyChest. If someone wants to play this map with me in a series of YouTube videos, please tell me! (and no, I won't spoil all the solutions)
About updating to 1.14: 1.14.3-pre2 still contains three critical issues, I hope those will get fixed soon. Here is the bug tracker filter, I recommend updating to the latest release once that list is empty: https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/MC-108469?filter=23011
It should still be possible to play SkyChest without too much interference of these bugs, in case that's necessary. But remember that even downgrading a .minecraft folder is not officially supported and can lead to various issues, including game crashes.

Due to the Minecraft forum shutdown/archiving, I'm moving this to Planet Minecraft: https://www.planetminecraft.com/project/skychest-4322464/
