Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the map man!
World download updated. New version includes a walkthrough for those of you who get stuck!
Any changes to the map itself? I just recorded the first 5 episodes in my Let's Play lol. >_<
Nope, no changes in terms of gameplay, just VERY minor bug fixes, nothing that'll noticeably lessen your experience, as well as adding a walkthrough in the map download. You're good haha
Noticed you needed a trailer for the map. Since I'm starting my official series later today... it seemed like a convenient excuse for me to make one. You're welcome to use it.
And as requested... Episode 1 of my full Let's Play!
Already added it to the main post, thanks!
Just hit over 5000 downloads!
I appreciate the feedback, but I've got to ask, did you finish the map? Because a lot of the the issues you've mentioned here are only issues at the beginning. I get the feeling you haven't even passed the 20 minute mark based on your criticisms.
- About the rules, I was going to set it to adventure mode, but there is an actual story reason as to why I didn't.
- You are allowed to modify and redistribute texture packs with permission.
- If your idea of horror is cheap jump scares like some other maps on here, you won't find them. The horror is in the atmosphere and the "otherworld" areas. If atmosphere doesn't scare you, that's an issue on your end, not with the map. Many people find this map very creepy according to feedback I've gotten. Not only that, but the beginning isn't that scary at all, and that was intentional. The map gets much creepier the further you go in.
- Again, there's only lack of food in the very beginning. By the middle and end, you have more than you know what to do with.
- I disagree. I shouldn't have to use command blocks just because. You say more should be used, but for what exactly? I saw no use for command blocks outside of playing sounds and to do a few other things, that's just how my map is designed.
- This is again, only an issue in the very, very beginning. If you never buy a sword from the stores, you'll still find enough to kill all of the monsters in the map like five times over.
- It wasn't a straight four years. I took breaks, I built the map on and off over the course of four years.
Thank you, I'm glad you're enjoying it! I'm glad to know some people appreciate good atmosphere to drive a horror experience. Most Minecraft players it seems don't have the attention span for anything but bad Slender clones that rely entirely on jump scares. (Not pointing anyone out in particular, just saying based on the amount of attention these maps get, they're good for Youtube, and kids love them), but trust me, if you think the atmosphere is unnerving now, wait until you get further, the halfway point is where it really takes off!
And yes the mobs are all hand placed (with the exception of maybe four total that spawned in the split second that I accidentally turned mob spawning back on. Whatever is in the map though is what's meant to be there, no natural spawns.
Looking forward to seeing the LP, I'll add it to the main post when you have it up!
This map is amazing, I love it! I especially liked how suited to the situation the music was, and it faded in and out. The designs of the buildings were simple, but very functional and still looks great, especially with the resource pack. The best part of you build in my opinion is how everything fits together. The atmosphere you created was awesome, and at times could really get my pulse up :D.
Of course, for me, the story has to be the best part of it. As a writer myself, I absolutely loved the story you put together, it is one of the best adventure map stories I have every seen. Even the wording of the signs seems to be well thought out, and adds to the map, rather than taking away from the immersiveness. The two endings were superb, and I'm glad I got the first ending (although honestly, I 'got' the second ending too, naturally lol :P). Its nice to see so much plot driven gameplay as opposed to endless puzzles and a million never ending mobs (although the spiders were a bit too numerous and annoying since they came from spawners haha).
I started making a while back, and while I would love to say that you were the reason I decided to make a map, you weren't, sorry. Your map is really inspiring, however, and while I don't know nearly enough tips and tricks to make mine the same quality, I'll aim for it...
I noticed that your map doesn't have a lot of command blocks, but it worked out perfectly in the end and really added to the map. For some reason, I've never considered using LESS commandblocks, only more :O. Kudos on an amazing map!
I have to stay I'm still kind of bathing in the afterglow of the ending...I do have ONE criticism however. You mention that enderchests can be used to store books and notes, which is nice but I ended up with at least 1.5 inventories of story things. As a completionist, I really don't want to throw anything out, which was kinda annoying after I filled up the enderchest -_-.
Since I'm a novice, I was wondering if you could tell me a few things?
What did you use command blocks for apart from music, and how did you set them up? What commands did you use, what set ups generally?
How did you do your music and get it to play that well?
Wow, that's what I call feedback! Thanks so much, and I'm very happy to hear how much you enjoyed it!
Regarding the Ender Chests, I knew this would be an issue, but I included it because I knew people would want to hang on to the notes generally. While the Ender Chest isn't big enough to fill all of them, it's really meant for holding on to the important notes, character stuff, cutscenes etc, minor notes like puzzle riddles and stuff really have no reason to be kept!
As for command blocks, yes I used very little. I wanted the player to get immersed in the atmosphere, not fancy effects. I absolutely HATE it when someone bases a map's worth is based on how many command blocks it uses(LeDirt up there seems to feel that way). Besides music and sounds, I used them to spawn a couple of enemies as you moved through areas (The Regulators and end boss were spawned this way), as well as using them to close the gates around you during the final "otherworld" visit. I could tell you the commands I used and the clocks I set up, but instead, you could just see for yourself in the map! Load up the map, and where you spawn at the very beginning, head over the small mountains directly behind you, you'll see all of the clocks set up along a small beach, in the spawn chunks. Most of the commands are activated through testfor @p with specific coordinates and a radius. So for music to play for example, I'd have one block with (just pulling these numbers out of my ass) /testfor @p[x=100,y=25,z=77,r=5], and then another command block connected to that one with a comparator using a command like /playsound music @a 100 25 77 1 1 0.1 (1 is the volume, the second 1 is the pitch/speed, and the 0.1 makes it fade out when you leave the radius). As for the gates closing behind you, redstone hooked up to pistons, and then when you're in a certain radius it swaps and air block with a redstone torch to activate the redstone.
Hope that helps! And thanks again for the great feedback!
Also to add to that, I really wanted the builds to be more complex, and they could have been, but I don't have much time these days and I was the only one building this map! In the end, story and atmosphere took priority!
As for the spider spawners, that room was intentionally really hard because it's an optional room, all it has is some amazing loot at the end of it haha!
Nice looking map, from what I've seen via comments it has a few kinks to work out, but me and my friend might be playing this tonight.
She streams on Twitch, so if you want to see live how people react to your map you can come laugh at us. Let me know if you want to check it out, I'll post on here when she's streaming so you know, roughly 3-4 hours from now
EDIT: If you hate advertising then don't check out this spoiler;
Link to her Twitch-
Sounds good, I'll check it out! Hope you guys like the map!
Too much to say so I'll say as little as I can for anyone who happens across this comment,
This is, by far, one of the best maps I have ever played. It has an excellent story, beautiful music/ambience, very, very well made world with multiple sections that will have you thinking it's Skyrim. If you are looking for a story driven adventure map with action to couple as well as sections possibly more immersive than some of your most beloved films, this map *IS* for you. Very fun with multiple people, I played it with 2 friends. This map is not created for multiple players, but that is easily remedied by buying food more from the stores in-game. I'm sure the map creator will release a multiplayer-exclusive map soon!
Please try this map, we played it on a livestream and even some of the chat were scared. One mentioned their toaster going off and terrifying them.
Thanks for the feedback! Though when I was watching the stream I didn't really get the idea that you guys were too interested in the story lol. I don't blame you for that though. The map has a ton of reading and you really have to think and pay attention throughout more than most adventure maps. It's hard to do that in a multiplayer environment because you don't get to play at your own pace (plus the horror of the map comes from the atmosphere, which is significantly lost with more than one person).
Regardless, thanks for the great comment, and I hope you guys really did have fun!
Glad to hear you thoroughly enjoyed it!
As for the music, yeah it freezes when some of the tracks come in. Oddly enough, it doesn't seem to be the length that causes it, since the longest track, which is during the boat ride, doesn't freeze the game at all (at least in my experience). Don't stress it though, everyone who has played the map has gone through it, I couldn't figure out how to stop it from happening, so I just left it as is and accepted it as a minor inconvenience that was worth it in the end.
And the room under the bathhouse, sorry to hear that it crashed your game so much, though that's the first I'm hearing of that. I play on a pretty low end laptop and I've never crashed in that area. Even the featured playthrough on this page by Unfixingalloy1, he plays on a laptop even lower end than mine and he didn't crash in there either. I'm not sure what was causing it on your end, but I'm sorry for the minor annoyance it caused!
Glad you made use of the walkthrough, that's what it's there for! I included it after seeing a lot of people get stuck. This map doesn't hold your hand, and some of the puzzles can be a bit cryptic, so I figured it was necessary.
Thanks again for playing, and I'll be looking out for the rest of the LP!
The map just hit over 7000 downloads!
Congrats!
