So I installed 1.3 and took to searching some of those clues. I believe I have managed to determine my heading based on the two clues: west of the start and south-west of the cross. That meant that the cross was north of the start. (Don't tell me if I'm right or wrong!) So I was picking around Naked Sky Ravine and I realized I hadn't yet named the third one above it, with a ceiling about the same height but the floor way higher - it's a short ravine you can see along the top of Naked Sky and Applesauce ravines. I guess I'll call it Tornado Alley, since tornado skies often have low-hanging clouds. XD
Anyway I was searching in there and realized there was an opening I hadn't yet explored. I went up there and discovered a rather large cave system as yet untouched by me. I found another exit which came right out on the side of Naked Sky ravine, I found lots of lapis lazuli, and then I discovered this:
Yes, that is a lava stream ending in air, over a water flow with a squid trying to swim in it. I fixed the lava so it wouldn't cause any disasters, but apparently squid keep spawning in that area. It's roofed forest so I don't know why squid spawn in it, but it gives me an idea--I should try to make a squid-spawn pool, and maybe name a couple of them!
Oh, just to clear something up, I'm willing to use the F3 menu for certain info. I don't consider it cheating to check the biome type because I don't see any other way to obtain that info other than making large grass patches and waiting to see what spawns there...screw that. But speaking of large grass patches...I had to search around quite a bit because Bob's room is surrounded pretty well by extreme hills, but I found some birch forest halls not too far away and covered them in grass. Oh and I've got a couple of cool enchanted items I wanted to show you guys:
First, a leather tunic that dropped off a mob in one of my spawner rooms:
Note the difference in repair cost depending on its placement on the anvil!
And here's my new mining pick:
Now you might be thinking that since I have a grass patch and a fancy mining pick that maybe I got livestock for leather, but this is in fact not the case at all. My enchanting table has just one bookshelf next to it (it doesn't do much!) and this pick I made by combining several before it on my anvil-I also used them quite a bit before combining so as not to waste all that durability. I'm really excited to have it! It won't last forever but hopefully it'll last till I get bookshelves. Shouldn't be long now, I haven't had the grass too long yet but soon enough I should get me some cows or sheep or something. I'm hoping for sheep primarily, and anything that gives leather after that. I'm working on a little project I think you guys might find pretty cool once it's finished.
I found several diamonds in a cave but I'm waiting on them until I have a fortune pick. I got carrots and potatoes! What I still need is sand and nether wart. I took some of my heaps of cobblestone and built a bridge across the lava lake in the Nether. It'll open me up some more area to explore. I haven't quite finished the bridge but I'm about to do that today when I get back on. That bridge used up 12 stacks of cobblestone, but it was worth it! Here, I got you guys a screenshot:

wow, that's great from a one-bookshelf table! We got decently enchanted picks after a while of combining as well. 1.8 changes to enchanting and anvil use were wonderful for this kind of thing lowering xp costs dramatically--makes it so it is much easier to incrementally improve your gear.
And that is one sick vest drop man! Shame it's one leather which is gonna make repairing tough, but with unbreaking III on it it might last decently.
And I know what you mean, I noticed some odd stuff just hanging out like lava and gravel. Disaster waiting to happen, not only odd but a bit dangerous if you aren't paying attention. Looking forward to hearing about your adventures to the west!

I finished the bridge, went across, did some exploring, and found a good spot to make more bridges! I called it Mad Max Crossroads, after the name of the Road Warrior. Here is the Crossroads in the finished state:
I went across the one on the left and a bit farther along I found a nether fortress.....but I'll have to make ANOTHER bridge to get to it! I'm getting tired of making bridges. Well that one probably has nether wart in it. I've had my client growing grass for a while now so maybe I'll go back and look for livestock, and then try to find one of those custom areas.

I got it all back but I had to jump into the water to get some of it. I've still got my efficiency III unbreaking III pick, my aqua affinity helmet, my smite II sword (found that on a zombie), and my power II bow. Actually just now I got a power II bow from a skeleton so I made myself a power III bow! And then my anvil broke! >.< It was the first time I used it after it had reached very damaged state. Kind of like the first time I used an anvil in Minecraft: the first time I used it, it became slightly damaged. The second time, it became very damaged. I used it about five more times without it breaking. Since then I've probably had around a dozen more anvils throughout my time playing Minecraft, and this is the first time one has ever broken on me.
I haven't got any livestock yet. Am I doing this right?
The room is more than half birch forest, though a significant amount of it is river or extreme hills. I don't know if those can spawn mobs, but birch forest should be able to.

I got to that nether fortress and it had nether wart! With the nether wart along with those brewing supplies and sand I got from the giant witch hut, I got my brewing stand going and have cured a villager! Tomorrow perhaps I will cure another. I'm going to name them Phobos and Deimos once I can figure out how to move them next to the nether portal. Stupid bug >.<
It looks like the baby zombie spawner is a no-go for chickens. It seems to only spawn them riding cave spiders, which is a rather interesting touch I must say! Still, I think I'll have to spawn about 400 zombies to get my first chicken. I've gone through a couple hundred already this game and no chickens yet.
Still no livestock on the grass. Maybe the ones upstairs are preventing them from spawning lower down. Has anyone else got any livestock other than chickens?

yay! You should be rolling in the potions now then! Pics of your villagers?
I too have been attempting animal spawns underground but no luck yet! From what I know they will spawn on grass above certain light levels (8 I think?) but not in Mesa, Desert, ocean, river, or beach biomes. But at this point the mob cap might be filled. I may type the kill @e[type=] command a few times to test if this is the case. Using the different animals names: Pig, Cow, Chicken, Sheep, etc. will kill all of those above. I think animals spawn in extreme hills though. All my grass is in that biome but I'm not for sure.

Since it isn't skyblock, and there are animals on the surface, you won't be getting many (slight slight chance) passive mob spawns :\
I'd suggest making an AFK fishing farm

what do you mean by an "afk fishing farm"? Don't you have to be there to reel in when bites comes?
And I agree, if you get animal spawning you got fairly lucky. It can happen but it hasn't to me. Also you need to be further than 24 blocks from the area but still have the chunk loaded for it to happen.

Guys! Do you like underground flowers? Look what I just found! A flower-forest biome! Haven't explored much but you could get loads of them by getting some grass to bonemeal in the area. All the tulips at least.

So I experienced my first village siege, and there was no village for it to happen to. Suddenly, zombies began to pour from my spawner and they ran right past me and to my villager. One of them was a baby zombie and I had to kill it quick cause it jumped through the light hole! One zombie even spawned outside of the dungeon! I got another zombie villager and killed the rest. It was rather easy getting the second one in the cage due to the presence of the villager:
He just couldn't wait to get in that pen! XD
So Deimos is a toolsmith, and Phobos (the first one) is a Cleric. I got a fortune I pick which I have been using on coal so my shortages have been solved, but I'll need to go hunting for more to have enough to trade to the toolsmith. I might be able to bypass the enchanting table for good diamond tools, depending on what luck I get.
So I decided to dig up to the bedrock. I was thinking hmm...maybe there's a hole. Danaphanous said there isn't but why should I not even check? So I built a stairwell up to the top, it's a very LONG stairwell. At the top I found sand!
Past here was the ocean. I used pumpkins to light it up and signs to make air bubbles. At first I was thinking maybe signs for air is a bit cheaty, then I thought well it'd be difficult for me to get respiration and besides, this is actually harder than just using a Respiration III helmet. So I went with the #1 rule of fun: if it's fun in the long run, do it! I enjoyed a bit of ocean exploration.
Oh what's that...I see a way out!?
Can it be?
Nope, it's a mirage.
It would seem that the bedrock generates only near the player, allowing you to see the overworld above until you get closer.
So with a slightly heavier heart I turn back home:
I got sand and a little bit of clay! Time to make glass and get creative! edit: stay tuned, I am one step closer to completion of my special project.
I was collecting clay and mostly using up a lot of signs when I thought hey, I can find clay here, but it's getting tedious. Maybe I should just go to the surface and get some. It's not really cheating since I already know I could get it down here! So I head on up
to Dragonborne Nether Portal.
So I'm out on the surface and looking for clay, and I climb to the top of one of the giant mountains. There are giant mountains everywhere! There's rivers everywhere, too! So I'm walking along and....WAT
Is it just a mirage? I draw closer to see...
Seriously...WAT!?

uhhh...wow, not sure what is going on there. It isn't even the right size for a normal chunk error. message me coords please? If that is a world generation error I may be able to fix it on future maps. That is the weirdest looking thing I think I've ever seen though, hopefully it is just a selective chunk-loading error as I've never seen that before and I flew around a good deal...

Update: I made it to a stronghold using eyes of ender! It pretty much uses up each eye every time you get a bearing I found out. This is because floating eyes of ender get destroyed when they run into walls/ceilings which almost always happened. However, getting the bearing using them and conserving them I was able to make it. It was quite a trek, but then I saw this:
happiness!
Also, challenge #20 may be impossible for you guys that got the earliest versions of the map, i just realized. In all my playing I've never found surface caves that penetrated deep enough to have snow that could be collected under the bedrock. So you have permission to skip that one if you're having trouble.

Hello guys! While fishing I got some leather and these goodies:
I realized everyone can get leather by fishing so I decided to expand my house and make a decent enchanting room, will post some pics later.
