I fixed the ocelot spawn now. They needed more grass. I was just using the tops of jungle trees, since the wiki says they can spawn on grass or leaves. I did have one block of grass up there, not sure why I went with just one, or even why I choose to put it there in the first place, so that accounts for my rare sightings. Put a small 4x4 grass square up and they are spawning much more frequently.
Oh slimes near the original lava square? I found a slime chunk farther out, but its under my house so the noise gets really annoying. I was already looking in the direction of the original lava square for a replacement chunk, good to know I was looking in the right direction.
How the heck did I miss this one?! Got my head stuck in FTB I reckon *snort* Well, I am doing a playthru of your Oceanblock to FTB so it's all good. Have all the bugs been fixed? I want to play it after my first impression but I don't want to have to restart it several times
Oh, its highly possible you will have to restart several times anyway
Enjoy the map!
Am I playing the same map as everyone else? You said you have to get under the dirt - I used TMI to get creative - nothing! Everyone is talking about the cobble they found and how they got lucky with the blazes..? I DON'T GET IT HELP ME
I'd suggest you go into the nether.
Wood near the lava will catch fire, and can light a portal.
Also, when in the Nether, don't make the mistake that a lot of people make while caving.
A lot of YouTube videos show people checking the ground while caving, and forgetting to look for open passages in the roof.
awesome - now what's under the dirt? apart from the void?! Confused
Well, there's a tiny bit of flowing lava.
If you have a fire resistance potion, you could swim in it, and pillar downward, making a base that you could then use to build a second layer.
Or, if you collect enough iron to make buckets, you might try moving the water.
Then, you could swim down the water without having to make potions.
Just remember, you cannot put water back down in the nether.
(In regard to a mod that gives realistic animal genetics):
Would you really rather have bees that make diamonds and oil with magical genetic blocks?
... did I really ask that?

I dunno, it seems pretty tame to me. I'm on my 10th night or so, been to the nether, seen what's below the dirt, what's above in the nether, and I'm at the point of trying to figure out how to make cobble and I haven't had any trouble yet. I'm editing part one of the video's now. Should be up sometime today. I'll post later and I may have to watch someone's to see what trouble everyone seems to be having. Maybe I don't have the same map? *confused*
Part 3 of my series is up. I don't do much productive but I do take a stab at my Nether mob trap.
I should really test these theories off camera before I podcast about them I give up on that, though, and go back to the original way I found to get working in the Nether.

If you're careful, you won't need to restart. The trouble is you may not notice exactly what you need to be careful of.
Many people get caught on that first night with their pants down, without good shelter or without having secured the villager. 3 or 4 creeper explosions and their world is destroyed, possibly with their obsidian falling into the void along with them.
I passed that part fine, but I was wondering, have you actually gotten a second villager yet? Because..
there's only 3 pieces of sand, how do you figure you're going to make bottles? I hope there's more sand somewhere because that'll screw those wool challenges up somewhat because of the cactus and waiting

Don't worry about it. Well, worry about it a little but there's more.

Lots more.
Goddamit, Am I going to be pulling my hair out trying to find it, like I was when I was looking for dirt in oceanblock? Then again, I tend to overlook the obvious, and that's why I never find things...

I can't say if you'll be pulling your hair out or if it'll take a long time, but it's a LOT like dirt in OceanBlock.

But if you got through all that, you're good
The funny thing? The very first thing I noticed as soon as I saw my first lets play for this map -- someone punched a dirt block, saw emptyness, and understood why it's "pancake", along with the relatively empty chest -- combined with "No furnace == no charcoal", and I instantly understood what was going to happen. And sure enough, that's exactly what happened.
Frankly, I consider what you have in that spoiler to be common sense. I can think of at least three ways around it (variations on a theme).
No shelter is just plain silly. Next to the lava is light level 13 at night. 5 blocks out (6 from the lava) is 8. Stick two wood blocks one block farther, where light level is 7, and put a fence on top of that. Make that your wall, and you stop everything except spiders from reaching you. You have an open roof, and can grow trees at night inside your compound. That's the first, most basic shelter. One additional wood block (with a fence on top) next to your doorway, and the villager will think it's a village, and will go inside on it's own at night, you don't even need to worry about it.
Options include roofing, or moving the walls in three spaces closer, so that the tops of the walls are 8 instead of 5. I don't like either -- one prevents you from growing trees (Well, you could make it a really TALL roof -- 8 spaces , the other makes it too cramped.

What to do. In the normal course of this game I have restarted many times including after watching let plays so I can incorporate better ideas. Finally I have gotten to the point where I have weakness potion and went to look at the zombies around my villager hut to look for a convert and behold my villager had vanished. I just don't know if I can start again. However this is the first time I have done many thing in the game (never worked with potions) so it has been a great learning experience. I have learned a lot of great moves from your maps.
now I have to decide if I want to make two villagers and then after I get my first emerald pretend like I earned silk touch shovel.
Please put something unique and interesting in your next lets play so I will want to start over.

Ouch!
You do have one possibility: Make a village, and make it big. I suggest a MegaVillage like MegaTrain has talked about. Slaughter EVERY villager with a useless trade (including ones with useful trades that have been X'd out and they have a bad final trade). Eventually one will be willing to trade you either a silk touch book, or a silk touch item (it doesn't have to be a shovel, even an axe will do).
Also, you can make an enchantment table (You should already have the diamond and can trade for a diamond pick to mine obsidian, and trade for a bookshelf to get the book) and then keep enchanting things until you get a silk touch something.
It's not easy by any means, but I expect it'd be far easier than restarting!
My first base with zombie trap on the left. Spider proof fencing. You can see the results of some creeper explosions here and there.
Zombies incoming!
Time for zombie slaughter
The New Base with Village and Farm.
Cobblestone generator version 2 or 3
The Nether Fortress, nothing efficient about it, but its a nice safe spot. I like to kill everything with a bow. The slabs are to discourage ghast spawns, while keeping it dark enough for blazes and wither skeletons. Torches near the outside walls to encourage spawning toward the center as the outside walls are out of bow range. With the ghast spawn more controlled I run around outside the fortress a lot more now. Oh, there was one weird nether brick block, that was above the level of all the rest, I don't think it was intended? I couldn't see any reason for it to be out of place. I kept thinking it was a magma cube until I took it out.
And my treetop mooshrooms.
Now I'm working on a very complicated (for me) semi automatic chicken farm. Why? when getting a substantial amount of redstone is a fairly slow process? I don't know. Now if there was a witch hut in the swamp... Nah, that might make the map too easy. Though it could make life more exciting in the early part of the map.
This map is great, in that if you don’t mind waiting a bit, you can have a fun time and get really creative. I love survival maps that make you pause and think, and this one certainly does that, several times in fact. By now, everyone should know how to make a cobblestone generator, with buckets, but what do you do with a river of lava and a river of water? Separated by several levels even?! (That was rhetorical; I know what to do with them)
I had, and am still having, a blast on this map and when Feed The Beast is updated for 1.5.1 I’m going to be playing this over FTB style, oh yeah!
I like your Nether setup, and it's making me think I went too long between testing and playing this map. I think I forgot what level things were on!
I was making my traps on the Soul Sand level, but that'd be level 40(ish). The fortress is on level 60(ish). What a maroon I am.

Actually, the witch's hut would make things too difficult for ME. It was hard enough finding a 2x2 clump of slime chunks that coincided with a Nether Fortress. The idea of ALSO coinciding with a witch's hut makes my head swim. Sadly, you can't place huts and fortresses, you have to just take what the game gives you.
Ah, not familiar with map editing at all. I didn't know that you couldn't place witch huts or nether fortresses. I assumed that the blaze spawning was simply linked to the nether brick, not to a nether fortress identity as well. Well that makes me more impressed with your map.

I was wondering about that in your let's play. I was wondering how you were going to make your way up to the next level then you started making your trap. I thought you were after the zombie pigmen.
Humorous event: Ghast fireball hit a pigman when it was shooting at me. Pigman spent the next few minutes running around chasing the ghast. It was hilarious watching it from my shelter. Then it got lucky and the ghast got low enough and pigman killed it. I cheered.

Hmm. Well, it's custom made. It has no grass in the overworld. It has no water or ores in the overworld. It's called "Pancake".
What are pancakes known for?

Don't be TOO scared. I was serious when I said this map was fair. There are no tricks or traps, and you can find everything through normal exploring.
