Completely unrelated to everything else in this thread, but while testing iron doors I discovered an interesting fact: Villager children can fit through the space between a fence and an iron door. They run around so much that they're almost guaranteed to escape a small area before growing.
Pair that with a 2-high dropoff and you can effectively sort children from a pair of breeders who are separated from the main trading group.

What version were you testing on? One of the 1.5 snapshots changed the hitbox for children, so they can go under 1-high gaps.
I played with iron doors as well, and they work pretty well as a trapping mechanism (if they are set the right direction), but there isn't any way to free the villager using redstone or something without breaking the door.
So separating baby villagers should be pretty easy, just have the adults in a confined area, with a one-high gap leading to a small fall that they can't get back up.
Sorry I have been gone for so long, (I raged 1 too many times after a creeper blew up my mob farm/experience grinder collection point thingy and ended up dumping the map in my recycle bin, (I found it before clearing the bin so no harm done. :D)) and noticing on the thread that villagers have become a big topic. In regards to all these piston contraptions, couldn't you have more fun doing some ninja redstoning and building something similar to what Etho has at his Zombie grinder? (it has a spawner in it.) If you were to replace the spawner with a breeding pair of villagers and have the children filter down into the holding cells (with the new hitboxes, this may need slight revisment) you could use a "Master" lever to suffocate the chambers that contain villagers, and a "Master" button, that puts the villagers into minecarts if you wanted to save them. Then again, each cell would need separate controls away from the "master" controls, in-case you get some that you want so save and some you want to kill. but that's just my thoughts on this and I tend to make things more complicated than they need to be.
Yeah, some of the piston gizmos are more just playing around with redstone than they are practical solutions. Now that I have slimeballs, I'll probably implement a limited number of pressure plate-based trappers, just on the villager booths that are currently vacant.
I actually fiddled with a minecart-based villager separator, but at the time I didn't have gold, and it wasn't particularly practical. (See this post back on page 25). And at the time, I didn't have a good iron farm, either.
I'm hesitant to use the "infinite villager" glitch, I'm not sure if that's what you meant. I think the 1.5 update with the change to baby villager hitboxes adds some interesting options.

I like the way you've worded several of those, like the armor and "cake or pie". Or should it be "cake AND pie"?
You've officially typo checked me! That was SUPPOSED to be Cake and Pie!
How do I take care of these guys without angering them?
Rise it up about 25 meters and surround your portal with running water that will push them over an edge. Solves the problem AND nets you a ton of free gold!

Yeah, I saw that design on your Let's Play map and frankly thought it was kind of unnecessary.
I don't think that anymore.
Of course, to move the portal I first have to get rid of THESE pigmen. I suppose, since I succeeded in turning off the portal (and setting myself on fire and dying in the process), I can probably just kill these guys without risk of one of them warping back and leaving an angry crowd on the other side.
EDIT: So are you satisfied with your portal design, with the flowing water and drop? Do you get any gold from it? Do you need fence gates on the ladder side to keep the pigmen from going the wrong way?
This is sooo one of my favorite maps. Even though all the golems I spawned were hating me. I started out watching Tannah's LP but I saw that you have one too and will be checking it out next. Anyway, love love the map!

Sadly, since I've started working on 4.1 and the new map, I've essentially given up playing this one. The last time I played it, I recorded it and you watched it on YouTube. I've gotten a total of about 3 pigmen since I moved the portal, and only 2 of them died. Neither gave me any gold.
I considered for a moment making a massive gold farm with a lattice of Nether Portals, but - like I said - my interest in playing the map has waned. Maybe if/when I start a LP of the next map.

Can a child swim upstream? I know adults cannot.
Is there any way to sort a pile of children and adults so the adults come out and go one way, and the children stay around and play?
(In regard to a mod that gives realistic animal genetics):
Would you really rather have bees that make diamonds and oil with magical genetic blocks?
... did I really ask that?

At the moment I'm more concerned with pigmen crowd control than the nugget drops. I have a nice gold farm working in the nether (cost me three deaths, though, video should be up soon...) With no natural overworld lava, a nether portal matrix seems unnecessarily difficult, especially as easy as it is making a farm in the nether.
I went through your new challenges list again and compared it to 4.0. It looks really good, I approve of the reorganization, the 2 separate books, and the removals and additions! (I should, several of them were my suggestions! :))
My only comment is that the tree farms should say "oak tree, jungle tree, spruce tree, birch tree" instead of just "oak, jungle, spruce, birch". Not a big deal, but my brain tripped on those reading them the first time.
Also: any new objectives you want to include for Nether Quartz, or now that we'll be able to bake Nether bricks? Maybe add that to the house challenge? "A house for yourself. Include some brick, stone brick, Nether Brick, and Nether Quartz Blocks in the construction."
You could also add one for hanging a painting next to your map. You could even combine those into
"Decorate your house with a painting, a hanging map, and potted plants."

Not sure, worth a try. Leaving it on the side just means that you can't have a 3-high wall between each booth.
But despite our "success" in coming up with these, I still think that just breaking the block pushed up by the piston to free the villager is easier
What version were you testing on? One of the 1.5 snapshots changed the hitbox for children, so they can go under 1-high gaps.

Yup, it was changed in 13w06a. (See MC-1524).
Here is a nice animal farm/cooker that takes advantage of the smaller baby animal hitbox:
http://www.minecraft...der-and-cooker/
So separating baby villagers should be pretty easy, just have the adults in a confined area, with a one-high gap leading to a small fall that they can't get back up.
I actually fiddled with a minecart-based villager separator, but at the time I didn't have gold, and it wasn't particularly practical. (See this post back on page 25). And at the time, I didn't have a good iron farm, either.
