This is what i started on yesterday.
Went to bottom and got some sand dirt and clay.
Trapped villagers in small room so they dont drown(again).
Started tree farm have some wood.
Mined all mineable blocks under start of island.
Have 4 or more saplings after 15-20 restarts from 0 saplings from all but birch at different points.
(got 0 spruce 1-2 time 0 oak once 0 jungle so many lol)
Some things can not been seen from here but the biggest thing is the tunnel to the floor.
No mob spawner because I was working on a design in creative which is now perfect. Creepers will die 1 hit now water needed. Slow but steady and made of all wood with no water.
No, it doesn't show up in there. And when I download the map it I'snt a folder it's just a file called oceanblock, so I don't know why it does that.
I bet this person doesnt have a zip program. It might be showing up as a folder instead of a zip file then minecraft doesnt know what it is unless you unzip it.
Also just an idea for an easy mode. You could Teleport far away put a command block down and enter the command mob grief and there would be better gameplay for most as creepers wouldnt destroy the island if they exploded on it. hard version would just be this so to speak.

Windows 7 should actually handle zip files without the help of an external program.
But yeah, installing a program that can handle zip files like WinZip, WinRar, 7-Zip, etc could help.

That's just crazy how many times you had to restart. I've never had that many problems with saplings, though I haven't played on the current version yet. Maybe I *should* make the jungle tree bigger

Hmm, I've not played around with command blocks yet. One problem: While the ocean appears infinite (and it is!), to keep the file size down it's actually only 4 chunks. Everything more than 16 blocks from the island's center is generated by Minecraft.

That's pretty sweet. Much nicer than my automated cobblestone generator that I cobbled (ha!) up from scratch.
Thanks for the pics! they're like food
That ones my own invention. I stumbled on it in creative. I actually had 2 other pistons on the prototype then realized i didnt need them.
And one of the rules could be dont touch the block if you find it. I fooled around with them in creative and they are great. Also easy to use but if the player on the map finds it, it can be abused to auto heal etc... So you could set it up at the corner of one of the chunks or at the emergency cache and put the command in for mob greifing so endermen wont steal you stuff and creepers wont destroy your island.
The sapling thing was odd for me to. I even got a single 4-5 times in a row then it dropped nothing after all that time.
Not just from the Jungle tree but from all but birch and then once birch sapling fell into ocean as did a few others.
Now i have a chest full nealry of oak because i farm the apples for food till i can get something else going. A few big trees have spawned for 3-5 apples but i know a little trick to make them only spawn small trees. Place a block 9 blocks up with a torch on top and you will only get manageable oaks.
No, that's the problem. When I download it from the link at the first post it's a file, not a folder.
it is a file.....a zipped file. Search 7zip its free or use winrar. With winrar put it int the saves folder then right click and extract here.
make sure minecraft is not running while you do this. Start minecraft and it will be in your saved games.
I can make a video if you need me too.
Are you using the flat world generator then painting in the biomes ?
Because this is just an idea.......Maybe edit only bedrock then put the blocks of clay sand and dirt at the bottom ? Maybe just a small bit like 128 or around that of each because the way it is its infinite in all directions. Yea its a challenge to get there mine it then bring back place etc... maybe a hard map would include 60 or so sand dirt and clay directly below the island ?
I like it the way it is for sure. Its nice and still challenging and i have yet to complete very much of it.
Easy could be like it is with command block mob grief off 2 each sapling in a chest with maybe 4 torches and an apple or 2
Hardcore = play normal or better with the stuff i was saying and creeper damage on ender grief on etc.... you get blow up you just deal and no cache at all ?
Just tossing ideas as i really like this map type and i love skyblock but i love this differnt type of challenge too.
ps and maybe enclose the villagers on easy so they dont drown. Hard that could be part of it not letting them drown.

Essentially. It's a custom-made ocean, then I built everything around the spawn from scratch. Then, right before publishing I trimmed off all but those four chunks.

I'm sorry, but I don't understand what you're saying here... it almost sounds like you're suggesting I do exactly what I already did, but I think I just don't see what you're saying.

I'm not all that hot on an "easy" mode. I think the map should be pretty challenging, no matter how many YouTube videos I watch where the people don't even look at the list of challenges and then say that I couldn't have realized that the map is impossible to complete because there's no lava.
The hardcore mode of version 3.0 got a steady stream of downloads, and I've considered making a hardcore mode of this one as well. It's a bit of work though so I've not bothered yet That hardcore map would not have the emergency cache and would (obviously) be in hardcore mode, but would otherwise be exactly this same map.
I've found a way to include a command block, though I still don't know how much I like the idea. I like that this map - other than the terrain - uses all of the default Minecraft rules. Changing those seems (to me) to be counter to the idea of the challenge, which is to exercise your creative uses (and expand your knowledge) of the Minecraft game mechanics.

I dont know how to make maps other than with world painter and it doesnt have these options to do this stuff like remove chunks etc...
I was talking about the endless floor on the ocean. It goes on forever which the challenge is to get down there and bring it back up. I was saying on hard it wouldnt be endless but only some blocks down there in a limited amount.
It is a great play and i understand lava and other mechanics of minecraft maybe to above average but not the advanced level.
Easy enough for me to light every other block and never get a creeper or enderman, but lots even most will get discouraged with an explosion making them reset. not me i will start over 100 times if that is what it takes. I keep the zip in the folder just click extract here and restart but average/newer players will not start over many times before leaving. Thats why i was suggesting different ideas. I like it the way it is for sure just suggesting some different things which may enhance gameplay for others or make it more casual of a challenge.

Okay, finally got it to work with winrar. Thanks for helping me and being patient with me, I know I'm a newb but I'm learning.
I'm finally playing now and I'll be posting some screen shots soon, 5thHorseman.

If you're interested in making maps, I wholly recommend MCEdit and BiomePainter which are the two programs I used (other than Minecraft's Creative Mode) to make this map. I've used WorldPainter in the past and like it, but it did not serve my purpose here. In particular, you can trim off all unnecessary chunks in MCEdit.

Ah. That is possible but I don't think it's necessary. This map isn't about surviving without endless dirt and sand (and clay but that's not as needed), but balancing how much time you want to put into it with how much you get. I don't want anybody to get to the final stages of their house and realize they have no more sand in the entire map, ever. Even in hardcore mode

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate and consider all suggestions. However, this map is more for you than it is for people who will get discouraged losing a half-hour's (or a half day's) work due to their lack of forethought.
Villagers coming along nicely now and got glowstone for trade but they only trade so much before not letting you trade the same thing anymore. Still got some for extra added light now.
I love this map, but I really hate the low drop of sapplings from jungle trees. Seems like I got a sapling from every other tree, cheating in a sapling each other time since I don't think pure chance should totally screw me If my sappling fell into the ocean, so it was my mistake I would have to live with it, but this is just silly I think.
Got a bit of luck on the villager side though, 5th villager is a blacksmith with iron pickaxe! Gotta get some more villagers to sell items to though, since I can't afford it yet, and my "paper buyer" won't buy any more.
Jungle sapling drops is better if you don't destroy leaves but just let em rot. That is how I maintain my giant jungle trees farm in area very far from any jungle. I also have small reserve farm of jungle trees in case one of giants failed to drop 4 or more saplings.

Actually, how the leaves are broken makes no difference as far as the chance of dropping saplings go (apart, obviously, from harvesting them with shears, which gives a leaves block but no sapling); it's down to luck, pure and simple.

It's a 31x31 space, 6 blocks high, under my farms (did I mention I like to build things big? )
This is how I'm removing the water. It's a lot of water to remove, by all measurements.
The one below might be seen as a spoiler, though players can find that info easy enough.
A wider view to get a feeling for it's size. See anything familiar?
Very nicely, if you put some thought into it
