It really is a beautifully made map and I did have fun playing it. However, I do have a complaint--the fact that it was in creative made it too easy to cheat (which I did do) and since the only way I could get back to the check point was to fly back, it really wasn't worth it to do, because your map is so maze-like, that I'd get lost looking for the lapis block. I would just end up flying to wherever I fell off and attempting the jump again.
My solution would be to implement a command block system, with a bed and have the game in survival mode. Have it so when they reach the checkpoint, they hit a button which sets the time to night, allowing them to sleep and actually save a spawn point, so if they fall far enough to die, they'll actually return to the checkpoint, or if they don't fall far enough to die, ask them to hit the "/kill" command to kill themselves and return them to the checkpoint. I mean, you've based the map on trusting the player to do the right thing anyway.

That's a really good idea but, like the guy below you said, you can't have falls over 3 blacks tall and even if you have feather falling boots you still get that little "punch" that stops you from jumping again immediately. I do have a solution to the problem that I'll probably implement into the next map, which just teleports you back to the last checkpoint when you fail.

About that, can you make use of command blocks to teleport people or something? maybe with tripwires on the floor that activate teleportation, so its not optional.
Well done! Very nice and very long! Makes a great let's play map. I would recommend putting signs with arrows pointing in the way to go because some areas are confusing, but overall excellent job. 5 Diamonds!
