I know that I am having fun with it. I'll try to have ep 10 up by tomorrow, had a busy weekend.
And that unnamed map looks interesting so far. Also you may need to advertise it a bit more so that more people notice them and can give their opinions. And you did say that you can play this as a CTM map...
These are fun but like the Vechs map Piggot Panic it's very tedious and hard. Once you get proper items it get less hard but there's still a fair amount of challenge just trying to move the them to Animal-Pen. I think that you should be slightly nicer because it's all the more ragetestic. You can't just pick up the item and place it you have to move it. Once you see the Mob Box you have to goto the work of transporting it to your Animal-Pen.

I just finished Caliginous Den. I have a full let's play of the map on my channel at http://www.youtube.com/user/bronymanproductions
The winning Screenshot will be up as a video. Next I will be doing a let's play of Unnamed, then of Deathly Lands.

Great, first LPer to finish the map! I would recommend your video to not be so laggy though. To prepare for the Unnamed map, practice Intricate World in Deathly Lands
I was just thinking that mobs will despawn if you are outside of the 128 mob bubble. So the mobs in the pen could potentially despawn. If you could have a mod so mobs don't despawn you wouldn't have to have things be so compact(Within 128 Blocks of the Pen)
Should I continue making these types of maps? Or are CTM maps more fun?

I know my first video freaking sucks,I died like....idk
Anyways,if u make a part two or whatever awesome update,tell me. www.youtube.com/user/TwiCaCaX
I love ur map,as well as CTM....
ooooo wait u got part two eh?I am going to do a review on it right now,I mean after school
Didnt know that,u should advertise it man!
I think he should merge the threads all into the very popular ctm thread so it gets more attention instead of making you go on to the other thread to look at it.
Pretty cool series! Should get more attention. I just completed Caliginous Den, the first map of the RTA series. The concept is clearly based off Vechs' Hostile trails, but that's ok, as you developed it further, there's a huge difference between this and his "Pigget Panic", as this is a lot more advanced. (Although I never actually completed PP, because of the glitches resulting of the anvil conversion)
Anyways, I had a lot fun playing through this map, partly because it had an innovative concept - CTM maps are awesome, but always just going for wool or even music discs is kinda repetitive, partly because the map itself was well designed.
Here are my victory screenshots: (note the additional animal on the right )
Here's a picture of my little base right next to the monument:
What's with the gravel right above the victory pen?
I like what you did with the monument - I mean the TNT explosion and dispensed potion each time you complete a task. Still, it didn't work for two of the levers, also I don't really like the look of it - bedrock is rather ugly. Obsidian would probably work too.
Detailed review:
I wasn't sure whether to try the map at all, it looked like it was well done, but getting the animals to the pen seemed like a huge annoyance / pain at first. I was wrong about that, though, it was not as bad, quite the opposite, it was quite fun and offered an additonal challenge which is kinda different from the usual combat in CTM maps, more focused on building etc.
The map clearly starts out a bit too rough. Aside from the 5 circle stone bricks, glowstone if you're smart enough to grab it and the chest itself, you don't have any non-gravity-blocks to build with and reach your goal / the end of the starting area - and that area is pretty hostile. I wouldn't say I'm a bad player, because of that starting area, I had to restart the map several times. I almost ragequit, luckily I didn't, because the real fun comes after that. Seriously though, a lot of ppl *will* quit here, so please nerf this a bit. After all, you want ppl to get to the parts of the map in which you've put most of your work. A starting area like this one is ok for a Rom-hack-hard-map, but not a normal difficutly one.
To put it nicely, you draw inspiration from Vechs in a lot of aspects, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but sometimes is a bit too obvious - like, having a chest full of "manchests" ( ) and a brick that has the exact same stats as Vechs' battle sign level one could be seen as a reference, but the rest of the loot is pretty similar, too, the combat and potion chests are almost the same. I like what you did with the random loot chests, another thing you've adopted from Vechs, though - they have way less crap / stuff in them than the orignial ones, so you can actually grab most of the stuff inside. Nether warts and slime balls were pretty useless in this map though - I'm pretty sure there's only one sand block (in the graveyard area) in the entire map, and you need at least 3 to get some glass bottles for brewing. I didn't really care, though, I'm not the person who's using potions all that much, anyways, just saying you should probably add sand somewhere.
Some more, random criticism:
I'm pretty sure you know that putting torches like this causes an ugly lighting bug, so why don't you avoid doing that? :/
The torch placement in this area (mines) looks kinda rushed and not good - can't tell if intended or not. Would be easy to fix.
In the training map, the creeper actually *did* blow up the dispenser! Does that have to do with the difficulty setting? (peaceful or not)
A few pictures of me getting the animals to the pen:
The squid was the hardest animal to get. I didn't bother buidling a railline until this point. Even then, it wasn't too easy, they're kinda glitchy. Getting them into the minecart is kind of problematic already, purely luck-dependant, and even after that, one managed to die inside of the pen. Since I'd already built the railline, I figured I'd also use it for the sheep. Same for the testificate.
I find it interesting that there are no seeds in this map, you can only find wheat in chests. Makes food management a bit harder. Luring animals into the pen with wheat is easier than I thought btw.
Two pictures of me discovering secrets (love that you have things like this in your map, rewards players who explore every area, which is great.
One last thing: The ore placement in this map was weird. Coal was very limited, I still needed to cook a lot of charcoal even after I had mined out all coal veins in the map, and even needed to start a tree farm for that after having cut down every single tree in the first area.
Same thing for diamonds / iron - I was basically able to upgrade from an armor that only consists of a leather chestplate to a full diamond armor. :/ That's not very balanced. Also, the diamond area shouldn't really be in the same interesction as the iron one.
The fortune book was funny, as it looks like an editable book with the enchantment on it, but that update wasn't even made when the map was designed. It helped getting saplings from trees while farming. The fortune pick was great for mining diamonds.
You've clearly drawn inspiration from Spellbound Caves - the Grand Hall (not sure if that's the exact name) is very similar to the rattle-bone crypts, it even has rooms under the pillars and two fleecy boxes hidden in one area. It was still fun, as I love close combat with overpowered gear and speed potions, also, it was a lot easier. That library-type-area was again kind of similar to the Blackened library.
Definitely keep this series going! It's interesting to have something else to go for than just wool. Luring the animals to the pen / monument is a challenge that's different to the usual one. Sorry for the huge text wall, hope it helps you making better maps in the future.
Edit: One more thing I wanted to mention: I think there's only a single pumpkin in the entire map, which is very unforgiving - if you screw up once, you won't be able to get the additional mobs anymore.
Wow! Thank you for such a detailed report. I like the starting area, so I'm not going to change it :P, did you find the chest with the wooden pick? Anyway, I did draw alot of inspiration from Vechs because he makes awesome maps!
And for the creeper blowing up in the training map thing, its the Animal Dispenser that does not break, sorry for the misconception.
BTW, since you did such a great job here, I would like to offer you to do BETA testing for my upcoming map "Colossal" , just PM me if interested.
Well, the animal completiton board kind of is a monument which you have to complete, it's just different ot the usual wool monuments. I don't think it'd would be a good idea to mix two things, it would take away from the innovative / fun RTA concept.
Well why not just connect the two maps? like after you get all the animals and flip all of the levers a secret passage will appear somewhere and a sign will tell you where to go.. and through it would be a victory monument and you have to go to all of the past areas and get all of the wools that are ridiculously hidden!
