This just struck me... VFIII is going to be a cave-based map, eh? How do you explain the area in my signature?!
The intro starts you in a wasteland surrounded by lava. Kind of a monster hunter feel where you gather some supplies from mob combat. Eventually you make your way around the island and find an entrance to the mines. That's where you see the first intersection and the real fun starts? I figured I'd try something a little different for the intro.
Ooh. The map sounds fun, although I won't lie about being disappointed that it's easy.
So since you're not remaking VFI or II I guess it's safe to play them. After I play and finish Septum, I might just tackle one of the tree_two classics.
Well. Since Septum is likely still a month-ish away, and I'm really hungry for a difficult, classic CTM experience... guess what I'm playing!
Vinyl Fantasy I Part 0: Prologue
Alright, here we go. If you've seen my text and image based map playthroughs on other threads (Vigilis Oculos is a grand example of this, being the most recent), you know how this is going to go. Each update will contain a substantial amount of progress (getting an objective, conquering an island, etc.), and no updates will be made until I feel I have made that. First few updates may be just getting set up since this is a bigger map.
Alright then. Let's get started!

Cool! It's a brutal map. Take your time if your going to iron man it.
Update 1: You hate me, so I guess I should die in a fire?
Let me just start this out by saying one thing: Golden Pants FTW.
Okay. So, this update details (at least as much as I can detail it, it's like 5 A.M. and I'm losing brain cells by the second) my discovery of the JBM, partial ownership of the starting island, and obtaining of C418 - 13.
So much for a few small updates until I get set up.
Alright. My first impressions. I really liked the tutorial thing, although most of the stuff I already knew. Probably my favorite part was when everything exploded and killed me (I know that was for respawn, so don't worry about me counting it for deaths). Anyways, I started the map and was greeted to a friendly VF logo on the floor (which I should point out is now gone, because creepers). The first thing I saw, I went towards, and luckily enough that happened to be the little shelter thing, in which I received my God Tier Gold Pants, but that's for later. I made a furnace, and went out to get wood (perhaps not in that order). Something I noticed was that the majority of the mobs were coming from the treetops, which plays an important role later. Since it's an island, and I spawned smack dab in the center of it, I went in circular patterns outwards until I felt safe (which I really wasn't).
So. At this point when I saw all the choices, like some kind of hellish intersection of sorts, I was reminded greatly of Nightmare Realm (which is a good thing, I think) with all it's choices. Only problem is, sometimes choices aren't the best things to have in high quantity. I naturally went to the JBM first, although it took me awhile because I was busy gathering arrows and not dying to go bridge out across the void. Eventually I secured a path to the JBM, which made me happy and almost made me fall off a cliff in my excitement.
Remember what I said about Nightmare Realm? My plan for that map will likely work here. Create a safe and controlled environment around spawn as my base, and slowly conquer each route as I see fit, while continuously working to better my base and make myself forget that all around me is nothing but death. My plan for reworking spawn? Operation: Candyland. This name exists purely because of the trees, and not because I'm going to make the entire map into a happy environment of candy canes and marshmallows, although in reality I SHOULD do that. This plan involves burning all the trees, flattening the island, and taking advantage of the Enderman spawners, because really, why are there so many? It's like you want me to warp all over the place, even though my playstyle involves putting the Ender Pearls at the top of my inventory, and forgetting they exist until I'm too lazy to walk to my tree farm.
I'll probably work on making my base before heading out to the next area (and I would appreciate advice on where to go next, because I'm not too thrilled about heading into a late game area with gold pants and stone tools), but before that, it's what you've all been waiting for, Record Time! Alright, so I found the entrance into the dungeon a while ago, but left it there due to other things. When I came back to it though, I meant business. I had stacks of dirt, arrows for days, and... wait, no I didn't. I had like 30 dirt, 3 arrows, and gold pants. Not the best things. Anyways, When I saw what it was, a straight shoot with skeletons, I just started bridging and lighting things up as I went. I almost died at least 3 times, but never actually did. Eventually I made it to the record, and got it back with no problems.
And this is where I stand.

I think making your way to the lava diamond or the big tree would be the best choice. The lava diamond is basically a big 3x3 dungeon crawl with lots of good loot. The big tree has some low level loot but, offers renewable resources (food and saplings.) alternatively, the snow and ice area and the netherrack mountain area are little more on the tame side but, loot and food is a bit more sparse.
Hmm. I think renewable resources are much higher on my priority list. Thanks! I may have the next update done within a few days, I'm not getting tons of time to play.
I saw the first map in this series way back in Minecraft 1.2, when I was new to CTM and too lazy to make a MCF account, and was put off by the 'Hard' difficulty rating. Now that I'm MUCH better at playing CTM's (and don't ragequit after first death), the hype for map III brought me back to this thread. When I learned VF3 hadn't been released yet, I was sad because I had nothing to do. Or so I thought. I then realized that I hadn't played either of the original maps, and so here I sit. Downloading Vinyl Fantasy 1. ;D
this... is... wait for it.... AWSOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMEEEEEEEEEEEEE
welcome back to forums hope you make the map really awsome, you should use all the new mechanics, blocks, mobs, and the resource pack 3d modeling support.
(not an actual update, but kinda important) (btw I died once) (not related to the actual area but see I was making an enderman farm and well it didn't go well)
lol RIP your PC. I forgot that used to happen. Probably for the best, although that area looked cool it wasn't really that well thought out gameplay-wise. You'll have an easier time finding the the loots and the music disk at least
Well, what happened was I accidentally used my flint and steel when I went to place a block (remember kids: using the number pad is way better) and made a tree-ferno instead of a bridge. I didn't see the record, but that may be because I was busy escaping. By the way, I'm starting to appreciate my enderman farm more and more, even though it's incredibly high maintenance with the endermen taking all the walls. Without it, I'd either be a pancake, roasted, or both. Ender Pearls FTW.
Also, my PC actually tanked that fire like a champ. Consistent 100 FPS during the peak of the flame. Which is weird, because that's the highest FPS I've gotten all map (usually at 60, feels like 30 with the lag spikes). Of course, nothing higher than 60 matters, but it was interesting.
This update covers: FUUUUU big tree, 4 ender pearls, 3 accidental flames, 2 stupid deaths, and a record in the JBM.
Alright, let's get started with my Enderman farm. It's pretty great.
It has two spawners on opposite sides of each other, and gives me a constant flow of enderbuns. The only problem is that they steal the walls, which made it hard to build. You'll remember last update how I mentioned that there was tons of mobs coming from the stupid wool trees. Well, there was a couple around the building site, and creepers were EVERYWHERE. It wasn't actually the creepers that killed me. It was the stupid skeletons. It just took one to knock me into an angry enderman, lowering my health enough for it to kill me with another shot.
There goes the ironman challenge. Ugh.
Whatever. It doesn't matter. So long as I can keep below 5 deaths, I have no problems.
Anyways, so why did I bother with the ender pearls, you ask? If you have to ask that question, welcome to the CTM map scene. If you're looking for a good starter map that offers minimal challenge, try Vechs' Nightmare Realm. I always bring 4 enderpearls into an area. No more, no less. 1 to get in, 1 to move around, 1 to get out, and 1 if something goes horribly wrong. Of course, I'm usually a huge supporter of the fun path, but cave spiders.
Alright, so the fun part. I took your advice, and went to the tree area. I swiftly realized that it was, in fact, a big tree. Hoorah. I saw the sign that burning it doesn't help, and decided that that was probably 100% true. I was going to leave my flint and steel back at base, but it was almost out of uses and I might need it for something, so why not, right? It was surprisingly easy getting into the tree, and the full iron armor and melons were helpful in sustaining my life. Getting up the tree was also very easy, minus the skeletons. It wasn't until the top that things got hectic. The cave spiders. Oh boy. As usual, I reached for my ender pearls to get away, but accidentally used my flint and steel, which I thought was a good idea to have on my hotbar.
It barely took half an hour before the entire top of the tree was gone.
At that point I had ran for my life, realizing what a stupid mistake I had made. By the time I mustered up the courage to head back, everything but the very base of the tree was gone. Me, being the egotistical hero I am, decided it would be fun to parkour up the burning tree. No joke, I didn't use a single block as the platforms I was standing on slowly burned. I got pretty high up, but eventually fell.
Death #2, is that you?
Yea. It is you. What a pain. Fortunately I lost nothing, and was able to gather wood to build up to the burning tree. Not the smartest idea, but I was careful. At that point the record was totally exposed in the air, so I could pearl to it and pearl back home.
Not too shabby.

Why is there a Giant spawner in Behind the Curtain? I almost had a heart attack when I saw it, especially because I was about to jump down there. I can only assume it's punishment for those who fell for the arrows behind the lava curtain trap (hey... the area name makes sense now), but I'm worried this means there may be more later. Oh tree_two, you evil monster you.

well, long story short I put that there in the 1.9 pre-releases. Then in one of the later versions giant spawners broke and I never really tested that room or knew how derpOP they were. I left the spawner there just because I thought it looked neat and most people had never seen one back then. Ah, the good old days...
Will there be another Vinyl Fantasy minimap? Maybe after VF3? I really enjoyed Industrial Park.
Actually VF III was conceived as a mini-map before I realized it was the one. I think after VF III there will definitely be mini maps. 1.8 has so many possibilities I'll probably try out different ideas on small scale. I always loved Xekaj's maps, maybe something on that size scale.

Eventually you make your way around the island and find an entrance to the mines. That's where you see the first intersection and the real fun starts?
