Ha, I'm playing with the altered John Smith you included as per rules anyway :laugh.gif:
I have a few suggestions but I want to carry on playing first. I was stuck in the prison area for aaages, and I have no idea if the method I used to get out was kosher.
I stole the toilet water and used it to make a water elevator back up through the TNT blast site--was this completely wrong?
So far so good, though, great storytelling & very nice, atmospheric construction :biggrin.gif:
Yes thats right actually, that was how you were supposed to get out of there :biggrin.gif:
Here's some suggestions/comments on what you've got so far! DO NOT READ if you don't want spoilers, random people!
I love the atmosphere & storytelling. I'm actually interested in the storyline, unlike a lot of generic adventure maps. I want to know what's causing all of the craziness.
The build is great, lots of awesome construction, the hospital/prison are creepy as all hell. The Silent Hill-esque bits of encroaching hell are really well-done and scary; the magma slime spawn startled the hell out of me. In the dark forest near the hospital wing, I actually found myself just sprinting down the road, not even daring to look back--too much evil in there, lol. Very good tree cover, by the way--tall and thick, makes the forest VERY dark without looking unnatural; not sure if you did that via mod or by hand, but it looks great. The woodcutter's house is also really nice, creepy, like some Grimm's faerie tales place out in the woods!
The boarded-up rooms in the "sanitarium" scared the hell out of me. I half-expected to see someone back there, watching me. Also, the sign "The walls are bleeding" made my hair stand on end :laugh.gif: The use of zombies as abandoned inmates (I assume that was the intent) is awesome. Even the starter building had me sprinting for cover after a long siege :tongue.gif:
The one "nest" room I found was pretty damn hard, happy there was a "save" chest there! I broke no less than three swords trying to get past the spiders and their webs, and the lines of bookshelves all around--like in the first library--were very claustrophobic & creepy.
A couple of suggestions:
* Decide whether to make the signs read vertically (top to bottom) or horizontally (left to right). You alternate between the two a bit, and it threw me off somewhat. On a related note, your "have fun" sign in the rules was placed in the middle of another sign-sentence! :tongue.gif:
* I'm not sure that the Great Library's ladder works post-1.1. I have a flymod so I enabled it to get past, but even with the ladders given, I couldn't get up there (you can't stand on top of ladders post 1.1, I think?).
* I'd check about lighting the sign-rooms (journals, etc) somewhat better, unless you intend for players to need torches to read them. A few were too dark to read at the suggested light level without placing torches. If we're meant to place lights here, disregard this point :tongue.gif:
* The fire atop one of the towers is likely to be encountered during a rain storm. This causes the sound to be DEAFENING, as the game is trying to play all the "hissing" from the rain-on-fire on every tile at once. May want to knock the fires out, or cover them perhaps.
* I would STRONGLY recommend marking every single key as to which door it's for. Either a code for each key, or a readme file listing them, or a description of the related door on a sign at each key location; maybe even colored blocks behind each keychest + matching ones on top of the doors. I got really confused as to whether I was following the game in the correct order or not.
* Some minor typo thingies--in the Prologue file, "persue" should be "pursue," "dissappearance" should be "disappearance." The diary in the library says "weary eyes;" I'm not sure if that was deliberate or meant to read "wary." "Closured" in the hospital wing should have less "d." There's a few others but these were the ones that stood out.
Apologies for the long list; with most maps I wouldn't bother, but this has great potential so it's better to try to tweak it to perfection, I think! Sorry if it's too much.
As a whole I really enjoyed what I saw, and I'm looking forward to a full version, and really looking forward to finding out the cause (and solution) to the plot's issues.
TL;DR: Great job so far, and keep going, please :smile.gif:
Thank you so much for your detailed response, and i will take your suggestions and fix them up :biggrin.gif: And for most of the diaries, you are supposed to light them up yourself to read them to kind of create the feeling of discovering these documents that have been abandoned for a very long time, makes it feel more mysterious.
lol the forest part was completely done by hand, took 6-8 hours at best, i did it before i realized single player commands had a "grow all" option. i was like FUUUUUUCK. But the forest is one part i'm particularly proud of :biggrin.gif: There are tons of hidden goodies there too, if you went looking instead of running :wink.gif:
And no need to apologize for the long list, the longer the better, that was the best response i've gotten so far, so thank you :smile.gif: Work on the map was paused for a while as i was short on time (and addicted as hell to Skyrim, omg) but i'm continuing today and it should be done within a month or so. Glad you enjoyed it so much, and thanks for playing :biggrin.gif:
Also, the great library ladder was to be repaired, its a puzzle, you have to find the other two ladder pieces in the library :wink.gif:

Regarding that, even with both pieces I couldn't get up the ladder. The ladder mechanics changed in 1.1, I think, but I may well have just been "doing it wrong" anyway. ...Was there a torch in the ladder-space, originally? I had assumed so, but I may have accidentally put it there myself when first exploring the room, in which case it's my own error. If there IS a torch, one can't get up the ladder anymore without removing it, which is (I think?) against the rules.
Glad the rest was helpful :biggrin.gif:
No, there was no torch at the end of the ladder :ohmy.gif: so you mean a torch was blocking you at the top?

Well, i checked the ladder in the great library, it workeed fine when i finished the puzzle and repaired the ladder, idk what to you but it mustve been some kind of glitch lol
So, because of the SOPA thing, Megaupload was shut down or something, so the map download link is not working, a mediafire link should be up momentarily.
Wow, this is a really good map! I was really scared at some points, from monsters jumping out at me to just the darkness unnerving me. The texture pack made it very, very scary as well. I didn't finish it (I died when a zombie jumped out at me and made me fall the entire height of the Great Library.)

me and two friends played this last night. it was absolutely AMAZING, brilliant map! i strongly urge you to keep updating this map! it was somewhat confusing at times which lead us to cheating (mainly at bits we thought about later and understood..) keep up the good work!
Aha its no problem, i don't condone cheating, i have exceptions for things like that, glad you enjoyed the demo :biggrin.gif:
Quite early in the story (that's what I think), I jumped down through a hole in the floor and ended up in a prison. Down there I found a mess hall and a chef's quarters. I found a golden apple, a lever and a bucket, but I can't find a way out! I've checked every cell, looted every chest and flipped every lever. How do I get out???
And also: it is quite hard to find out where to go(not that I have very many places to go), and I think you should do something about that.
Just made 1,500 downloads as of today, thanks for all your support guys, and i apologize for the long wait for the final map, but i assure you, it will worth the wait when completed. :smile.gif:
Really awesome map! Spooky and scary as Minecraft can be! My heart jumped quite often while playing the map. Can't wait to see the final version.
My final score was: 95 torches, 41 gold

My brother came across a video today that i wasn't even aware of being up. It's by a youtube user named TheDickQuester, i found what he said very flattering and i thought it deserved to be on the topic.

Dude how can you APPROVE SOPA! You do that and youtube, facebook, twiter and other websites like that will vanish off of the face of the US.
LOL glad you're enjoying it :smile.gif:

Hello.
Great! haha i'll add your playthrough to the appropriate section of the thread so others can see :biggrin.gif:
Glad you're enjoying it!
LOL maybe! ;D
My final score was: 95 torches, 41 gold
Thanks for playing!
