If you're patient enough, you can bridge around the Nether until you find where there once was a Nether Fortress.
You, sir, win the kewpie doll for getting something that is supposedly unobtainable on this map. I recently found the code that actually spawns these critters in the Nether, and you are correct that you can obtain a blaze rod in the manner you've described.
With a little bit of decyphering, I might even be able to publish the formula based on the Skyblock seed for generating the fortresses... and I'll admit I hadn't thought of doing that before you mention it on this particular map. There definitely are several resources you can get with villagers that are otherwise unobtainable on SkyBlock.
One that isn't documented on the wiki but is possible with the redstone is to make an obsidian generator by pouring lava over redstone wire. You can either "build in place" or get a diamond pickaxe from a villager to use it in other ways as well. It would be nice if you could get some diamonds to make an enchantment table, but that isn't on the map. You can, however, make multiple ender chests that way though
...an obsidian generator by pouring lava over redstone wire.
I'm almost certain that got fixed. What I'm planning on doing, once I get a diamond pick from a villager, is to go into the Nether, bust down the Portal, put the obsidian and pick in a chest, and jump off to my death. I'll respawn at my overworld bed so I can enter the Nether and repeat the process after the game regenerates another Portal.
And Thanks for the kewpie doll! I had to look up kewpie dolls on wikipedia and I still don't know what the heck they are! lol But I would like one that is "highly collectible and worth thousands of dollars."
No, it still isn't "fixed". I just build this obsidian generator in 1.6.2:
It still works. As a matter of fact, this was not accidental but intentional behavior put into the game by Notch. I don't want to get into the politics of the thing, but it really isn't a "bug", and it was supposed to put more obsidian into the game. At the time, lava was quite limited. It "feels" like a bug and the wiki tries to suggest it is a glitch, but there are ample statements by Notch when it was originally put into Minecraft to show it clearly is intentional behavior, even if unorthodox in terms of creating blocks. For awhile, even string was causing this behavior, but that indeed was a bug and that was also fixed to only work with redstone. It might be a little bit easier than mining portal gates, but that is your choice.
As for the Kewpie Dolls, they were basically a prize given at traveling carnivals and circuses for games of skill, like throwing a ball at some bottles or using a gun at a firing range. If you were successful, you could get one of several prizes, but of course you wanted to get the Kewpie Doll as a present for your girlfriend if you took her there on a date. That was usually the top prize, that sometimes you could trade in lesser prizes after emptying your wallet trying to win the game. Of course older dolls given out by a circus that has long since disbanded is considered a very rare collectable.
IMHO, this is something better than a diamond, but I'm sorry I showed my age on something like this.
My mistake. It does still work with redstone. It was the string version that I was thinking about. I much prefer this method over farming portals. Even if this was a glitch I'd still do it. As soon as someone figures out another sand generator I'm probably gonna do that too.
download links dont work (it just shows page with links to some random pc cleaners and music players) also ip skyblock.net is not working (cant resolve hostname)
A villager was kind enough to sell me a diamond pickaxe on my Skyblock world today.
I was going to make a redstone obsidian generator but then I realized it would cost 1 redstone per obsidian. I wanted to farm quite a bit of it so I went the Nether Portal route. I need my redstone!

I wish my 42nd post was a little more significant. I love the title.

Wait, if you get redstone in the nether, but you need redstone to generate obsidian, then how do you get enough obsidian to get a portal? (That assumes there's a diamond pick somewhere available.)

I made a tutorial, your welcome.
That's a very strange way to present a video to someone.
I read "Welcome" like you would say "Majesty." Sounds a lot nicer!

.............mcf isnt gone???????????????
You've never played Skyblock, have you?

Nope. Just started it last night. I take it there's another platform somewhere?
Hmm, do you have render distance turned to tiny? You should crank it up a bit, at least to look around.
One of the joys of Skyblock is that you can turn up your render distance a little on older computers.

Yep. Render distance set to far, graphics cranked. Even popped it into creative and flew around a bit. I take it there's something else out there?
