A tip: Those are iron blocks attached to the cannons. If you can figure out how to get 3 cobblestone early enough like I did (didn't even go underwater), you're set for a while for tools.
Edit: Duuuuuh. The gold.
Double edit: As in for other tools. Especially since gold works so fast.
Triple edit: (Maybe I should just make another post...oh well) Right, first shot at it ended quickly. Went straight down, hit a tunnel, and when I was trying to get a safe enough place to work a creeper bounced over and blasted my gravel wall apart for the 912837461289347 zombies to get me :sad.gif:

Do you have a lovely bunch of coconuts? Do you have them all standing in a row? Are there big ones, small ones, some as big as your head?
I'll admit I've failed this map every time I tested with the intention of doing iron man mode. And I know where everything is. It may have made me less cautious.
Semi-spoiler in the next paragraph
It did lead to a novel method for creating land for my island that I hadn't intended when I started building it. Lava isn't too hard to get if you know where to get it. There's lots of water. If you experiment with dropping the lava into the water, you might find a nice way to bypass or reduce the 500 hours of gravel collecting it would otherwise take.
I was most looking forward to seeing what people did with the gold. I did have visions of legions of butter-armored gents running around.
I'm also curious if anyone has gotten farm animal spawn on their map? I think Notch's last spawn code update may have broken it for Adrift!.
This looks awesome, I had a lot of fun with the island survival map, so I think this will be even cooler in ways. It's inspired me to build a boat of my own just for the heck of it. I'll post my progress in a few days.
Well, I'm playing through it now (I decided to start over after I crashed minecraft accidentally hitting the HUGE screenshot combo button, shift + f2) and I've got to tell you, It's well thought out. did you do the caves by hand as well, or were those randomly generated? I have an inkling you did them yourself (very claustrophobic tunnels, and some unexpected kill areas). All and all, even though I haven't beaten it yet, GREAT job. This is the first challenge map I've played, and I'm really enjoying it.
Also, how was the experience of making the challenge map? I've been planning one out on paper for a while now, and I was wondering if there were any unexpected troubles, or anything else about the creation process you would like to point out?

Do what you can with what you have, where you are. -TR
It would be cool to do this in other ways. An Underground Facility Version, A Zeppelin Version, a Small Abandoned Town Version. As long as the space is small and feels like it's not completely natural, it really makes for an original Challenge. Far too many island or cave maps exist.
Anyways.
Yeah.
You asked and it will be made, i have already got a huge shell of a zeppelin done, just need to do the interior. I will make a topic for it in the next few days.
Yes i have a plan, there will be a half finished portal in a trap/spawner filled room but in order to activate it you must find the obsidian blocks scattered throughout the ship. From there it will lead to a nether thing idk what yet. And from there you find a portal to broville AKA civilization :biggrin.gif:
The secret locations are marked with signs. Looking at your image, I expect you'll find a sign or two somewhere in that cave. If the creepers haven't eaten them yet. Maybe in a week or two I'll post an extended walkthrough/spoiler.
MrFunsockz-
I didn't do as much planning as I normally do with any sort of Minecraft project. Once I had the concept established (boat on open ocean), it came down to a couple of nights messing with MCEdit to get the terrain set the way I wanted it. I didn't have a specific resource profile in mind for starting conditions, so I started stocking the boat with what made sense (axes to cut lines, fishing poles, lifeboat, salt pork, massive gold stash looted from a colony, etc). After play testing the map for about eight hours I made a few tweaks. Don't underestimate the value of play testing (some maps posted here don't seem to have been tested at all).
The caves are mostly natural, so I got lucky in some of the features that showed up, like the underground lake where I may have left a spider spawner. It seems like the current map generator spits out a lot of Swiss cheese, so I was glad to see mostly-contained cave systems to exploit. Some small touches underground were mostly done by hand in game, except for the massive amounts of lava which came courtesy of MCEdit.

I built a rather large dirt platform that the grass grew onto, and I usually come back up to the surface to find is completely covered in random animals.
Also, I'm going to have to try using the lava, that sounds a LOT faster than playing the shift-click-hope you don't fall in game.

I did not see any signs, but this 'Dungeon' looks quite strange. In the view you can see is a 1 wide hole. I (turned it on peaceful) looked closer in it and it was like stairs to another cave part. Inside was the dungeon chest. It had 2 saddles and a cacti.
You may have the save file one layer of folder too deep. When you open the World# folder, you should see lots of subfolders with numeric names. If you just have a single folder, copy the contents of that folder down a level.
Also, I've heard a report of incomplete files being downloaded from the host. A second thing to check would be to re-download the original file and try again.
Err i folowed your steps, then tried my own steps but each time i just spawn on a normal ground, any idears?
Make sure you get into the folder that has all your world folders in roaming/.minecraft. Copy the adrift folder from your zip in there and you ideally want to rename it to a world you're not using. To help make sure you're in the right folder, if you are using Windows 7 the full file path is C:\users\(user name, this will change)\appdata\roaming\.minecraft\saves. I can't say for sure with other versions of Windows or Mac though.
If all 5 worlds are taken, you can move a world into another folder so you don't have to lose it.
Rename the folder to the name of an unused world, like if you don't have a world 1 save in the folder, rename it World1. The lack of a space is very very important and will make all the difference. If you wanted to make it world 2, then it's World2.
If that doesn't do it, then I'm honestly not sure what else there is you can do. I don't know if there's any mods that could interferer with this, but that might be another thing that could be causing issues.

Thanks for the reply, I just wondered about some of the stuff in the caves. I found dirt for the first time, and franticly dug it out, only to be greeted by lava from the other side.
Either way, excellent job!

Haha, that just happened to me too! Maybe we found the same patch of dirt :tongue.gif:
Wova, this map is pretty cool. It has a very MYST feel to it, especially when you have to play on Tiny distance like me. I haven't found any secrets aside from #1, but I did find a cave, a zombie spawner, and a ton of iron. And coal, so I can quit burning logs for illumination :tongue.gif:
Make use of gravity-prone blocks (sand or gravel). If only there was a stash of one or the other on board! *shifty eyes* Once you can get down to the bottom (you'll probably need ladders), mine to find more gravel, extend island, repeat.
Method Three (Painful if you're lava-impaired)
Find lava, drop lava in water to generate cobble. Remember that wood burns. Remember that you burn. Believe it or not, you can do this on Adrift! without mining a single block.
Edit: Duuuuuh. The gold.

LMAO! A creeper just came from a tunnel somewhere in the back of this and just blew up the zombie spawner.

Love the Metool!
Built: November 8, 2010
People who love the Metool: 4
Spoilers:
Method One (Really Painful)
Swim down, place block, swim up.
Method Two (Less Painful, but slow)
Make use of gravity-prone blocks (sand or gravel). If only there was a stash of one or the other on board! *shifty eyes* Once you can get down to the bottom (you'll probably need ladders), mine to find more gravel, extend island, repeat.
Method Three (Painful if you're lava-impaired)

Support my suggestion, Thanks
