Oh hi, welcome to the MinecraftForum.
Next time you need help:
Please post more information and don't forget to Check previous posts before you ask for help.
There's an easier way to install OptiFine. Assuming you have Forge (well I don't know cause you didn't really say anything other than "optifine is not working"), you can just drag the OptiFine zip into the "mods" folder in "%appdata%\.minecraft" (I assume you're on Windows?).

Love your mod, love forge, love optifine, why don't you all work together? xD Using lightloader, forge and installed as instructions told me. Also running optifine in the modfolder.
I don't really think OptiFine_1.6.4_HD_U_C4 is compatible with Forge#898 (and did you install it with the simple drag 'n drop to the "mods" folder or did you use the steps mentioned in the guide?).

The guide isn't updated anymore, so I'm planning (still planning, might have issues with it) to make a new thread related to this thread. The guide does not work with the latest versions of OptiFine, as there is a new way of installing it. Some versions of Forge are not yet compatible with the latest versions of OptiFine, and it wasn't emphasized here.
I checked the OP's profile, and the last time he was active was in July 28, which means he might not plan on updating this guide anymore.
So I am having a bit of trouble with the Json file as it is becoming frustrating. Upon editing the json file i am finding this annoying bit of the forge version i am running not being available.
I am using Forge version 9.11.0.884
along with Optifine-1.6.4_HD_U_C4
any help would be appreciated and here is the data from my json file as per the instructions you presented

im haveing issues running the .jar file. i have set my path to run java. it works as i have done java -version and it responds. iv set my ftype for java. if tried evrything. yet when i try to run it all i get is an hourglass to blink for a few seconds then it gos away and nothing happens. heres some specs.
Windows 7 x64 bit
JRE7 x64 bit installed. i attemped with 32 bit also and no dice,
PATH for java set to C:\programfiles(x86)\java\jre7\bin
Ftype path set to C:\programfiles(x86)\java\jre7\bin\javaw.exe.
please help me me and my buddys wanna do forge so bad and i cant get java to work.

Wait, why did you exit that tab? The log is there to show what's happening in the background as the launcher launches the game. It'll really show up.
I have and error when i try to log in, it was working fine before but now it says this: ava.io.IOException: Cannot run program "C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre6\bin\java" (in directory "C:\Users\MOM & DAD\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft"): CreateProcess error=740, The requested operation requires elevation java.lang.ProcessBuilder.start(Unknown Source) magic.launcher.ap.a(SourceFile:261) magic.launcher.MagicLauncher.a(SourceFile:1331) magic.launcher.G.run(SourceFile:1273) java.awt.event.InvocationEvent.dispatch(Unknown Source) java.awt.EventQueue.dispatchEvent(Unknown Source) java.awt.EventDispatchThread.pumpOneEventForFilters(Unknown Source) java.awt.EventDispatchThread.pumpEventsForFilter(Unknown Source) java.awt.EventDispatchThread.pumpEventsForHierarchy(Unknown Source) java.awt.EventDispatchThread.pumpEvents(Unknown Source) java.awt.EventDispatchThread.pumpEvents(Unknown Source) java.awt.EventDispatchThread.run(Unknown Source)
You're probably using a limited account (not an administrator account). You'll probably want to ask the administrator (your parents I assume?) to reinstall Java in your account.
Im now at 1.6.2 and mine server uses special mods so they have their own installer for MC... But it doesnt install into folder Appdata and its not named ".minecraft" but only "minecraft" but if i rename it to ".minecraft" then it somehow dont work with the mods.. so i cant rename it.. And i have problem that Magic launcher wont let me select as base folder "minecraft" because it says that last folder name has to be ".minecraft" !!! help pls. How to select base folder without the "." ? Posted it also into Magic launcher topic but no one wants to answer me for dayS! pls help
(I assume you're on Windows)
Were you able to rename the "minecraft" folder to ".minecraft"?
If not, go to an elevated command prompt (search cmd.exe then Run as Administrator) then type the following:
cd ..\..\Users\*YourUserFolder*\AppData\Roaming
rename minecraft .minecraft
Replace *YourUserFolder* with, well, your user folder.

Not sure if this may be the problem:"C:\programfiles(x86)\java\jre7" is a 32-bit Java version. It works for 64-bit versions too, so that would probably not be the problem here.I think it's supposed to be "C:\Program Files(x86)\Java\jre7" (capitalization and spaces matter when dealing with directories/folders).
Hey guys, I'm in a bit of a pickle here, hoping that someone can help: I have three builds of Forge currently installed in three different profiles (due to various degree of compatibility with some mods I use). I'd need to install LiteLoader into another one of those profiles, but the installer only offers to chain with the latest version build I have installed, which, unfortunately, is not the build I need to chain LiteLoader to. Any help on the matter would be greatly appreciated. Best regards, Thomas
It's just the way the LiteLoader installer works. Can't do much about that other than manually installing LiteLoader to the specific profile, which is not recommended.
I am using both forge and liteloader. When I play I use the liteloader profile because its the only way to load certain mods since Forge profile wont use them. However after installing Optifine the specified way in the first page it wont load at all when I am using the liteloader profile.
Am I supposed to add the little code to the liteloader json in the versions folder?

Yes, because that's the part of the code that actually loads OptiFine itself.
okay so after adding the code part to the json and trying the game again I get this error:

by myself I cant tell what went wrong otherwise I would not be posting this hoping for someone more experienced to help.
I did all the steps:
.minecraft>libraries>net>optifine>optifine>1.6.4_HD_U_C7
when I added the code the second optifine:Optifine was with a capital O. is this significant? I edited it to a normal optifine since my folder name did not contain capital letters.
is it possible to hide the Code part in this post so reader click a button to open it and not have it take so much space?

by myself I cant tell what went wrong otherwise I would not be posting this hoping for someone more experienced to help.
Oh wait, I think I remember what should be done when installing OptiFine. Been some time since I used OF.
You should just drag the OptiFine jar file to the mods folder in your ".minecraft".
That's what the OptiFine OP ( http://www.minecraft...-and-much-more/ ) says for the later versions.
It's in the "Installation" section in "For Minecraft 1.6.2 and newer".
This still applies to LiteLoader chained to Forge.
B. Simple
(for OptiFine 1.6.2_C4 and newer)
- Put the OptiFine JAR file in the Forge "mods" folder
- Start Minecraft and Forge should automatically load OptiFine

Hey, i've put optifine in the mods folder and added that extra line of code, but when i go to options it doesn't show the options optifine should give. It also doesnt give me any error, just not recognizing optifine as a mod...
You don't have to add the line of code in the latest version of OptiFine.
I don't really think OptiFine_1.6.4_HD_U_C4 is compatible with Forge#898 (and did you install it with the simple drag 'n drop to the "mods" folder or did you use the steps mentioned in the guide?).
The OptiFine page (http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/249637-162-optifine-hd-c4-fps-boost-hd-textures-aa-af-and-much-more/) does not really say that it's compatible with that version.

I checked the OP's profile, and the last time he was active was in July 28, which means he might not plan on updating this guide anymore.

please help me me and my buddys wanna do forge so bad and i cant get java to work.
(I assume you're on Windows)
Were you able to rename the "minecraft" folder to ".minecraft"?
If not, go to an elevated command prompt (search cmd.exe then Run as Administrator) then type the following:
Replace *YourUserFolder* with, well, your user folder.
Not sure if this may be the problem:"C:\programfiles(x86)\java\jre7" is a 32-bit Java version. It works for 64-bit versions too, so that would probably not be the problem here.I think it's supposed to be "C:\Program Files(x86)\Java\jre7" (capitalization and spaces matter when dealing with directories/folders). It's just the way the LiteLoader installer works. Can't do much about that other than manually installing LiteLoader to the specific profile, which is not recommended.

Am I supposed to add the little code to the liteloader json in the versions folder?
Yes, because that's the part of the code that actually loads OptiFine itself.

Use the [spoiler] tag to hide the code section.
At what point did it crash? (You had forge and liteloader working but adding optifine = crash?)
Can you attach a copy of your json file?
