The Guide for using Optifine with Forge doesn't appear to work, as it is, now.
I've followed it to the letter, with the file "OptiFine-1.6.2_HD_U_B5.jar" at .minecraft/libraries/net/optifine/optifine/1.6.2_HD_U_B5/. Forge has been installed properly, and can be verified on load, and the Forge .json has been modified at exactly line 196, right after the final curly brace and before the closing bracket, with the following:
I have also including the JVM parameters successfully. When Minecraft loads, Optifine is simply not present, nor are any of it's options, in either Controls or Video Settings. If it makes any different, I am also using LiteLoader (Chained to Forge, as per the guide), along with the Macro Keybind Mod, Rei's Minimap, and Inventory Tweaks.
This appears to be a common issue, looking over some of the last few pages, but I didn't notice any fixes. Help is appreciated!

If all else fails, use the MCPatcher method posted by UnDrac in this thread (it will modify the .jar though, but it works fine for me and others with no problems).
And since your .json was already modified, try starting from a clean .minecraft installation (leave the "saves" folder though, or you'll lose your world).
And another thing: if you don't need LiteLoader (which I think you don't, yet), skip the download and installation of LiteLoader.
People ... I've posted a Much simpler way of modding your Minecraft client you don't need to edit anything. And yes Jar modding works with my method.
Download Forge (both installer and universal) and liteloader (installer) and any mods you'd like to be installed in the jar (ex Optifine)
1st Install Forge with the installer and make sure it's working using the Forge profile
2nd install liteloader and chain it to forge also making sure that liteloader mods and forge mods within the mods folder still work with the Liteloader profile
3rd download MCPatcher and use that to add minecraft forge (universal) and your internal mods (optifine) using MCPatcher or whatever you want as a new profile, but patching LiteLoader1.6.2 like in this picture
Make sure you uncheck all MCPatcher options as they are included in Optifine and will cause your minecraft to crash at startup.
After that if it works you're set, just use MCPatcher as your profile when starting Minecraft, and if it doesn't work you can select MCPatcher as the current profile (if not already) click on "Edit Profile" go to JVM Arguments and add
"-Dfml.ignorePatchDiscrepancies=true -Dfml.ignoreInvalidMinecraftCertificates=true" without the quote marks
If that doesn't work still ... it means either you did something wrong, or one of the mods you use has an incompatibility issue with Forge
EDIT: This is possibly the simplest way to install mods since 1.6.2 came out (idk if magic launcher can do it)
I'm currently running 21 mods 4 of which are internal ones like optifine 3 of them are liteloader mods and the rest are forge mods

This is one of the most excruciating ways to mod a game. I hate that new launcher, before all you had to do was a simple 2s copy paste, now I tried for 1h30 and I get nowhere even after reading through the 13 pages of posts and watching 4 videos.
Here is what I do :
1. Clean Install
2. Launch game, close it
3. Install Forge
4. Lauch game, forge is there, close it
5. Prepare optifine's folder and line of code in file. Edit profile with line of code provided for java
6. Launch game, back to 1.6.2
For some reason when I edit the json file, I lose the capacity to load forge, it disappears from the list of selectable jar version.
Here is my launcher log and my JSON file

Hey I'm using a mac too and had this issue. There was two things I had to fix and hopefully this will help you too:-
1) If you have liteloader installed you need to edit that json file (liteloader1.6.2.json) as well as the one mentioned in the original post
2) Make sure you have the code looking like this (you may have missed the file://nothing out as it's not mentioned in the op but is needed for this to work on mac)

I have followed this tutorial 3 times. All three times I've been able to install forge with no problems. When I try to install optifine it removes or does something with forge and nothing works. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, maybe there's a conflict with the forge and optifine I'm choosing to use, [I made sure to install the correct version of forge for optifine to work] I can't get it to work.
If you still want my json info then obviously let me know. I don't want to put up anything until prompted. It's just how I function.

You don't really have to worry about showing your .json, as it just contains list of information that Minecraft needs to launch (libraries, profile metadata, profile name, mods, not much other than those).
We really need to see it as we won't be able to trace where the problem is exactly.
We'll also need the log (the wall of text that scrolls when you launch Minecraft in the launcher), as it could show the exact problem (you'll most likely see errors there).

Reading through the OptiFine OP, I think you should use a different version of Forge.
The post states that you need Forge#830(and note: you just have to drag the .jar to the "mods" folder instead of making new folders as stated in the post)
Looking over BlackMamba's post, word for word that's my problem as well. As I stated before, I changed the version of forge to see if that works. [I tried 800, 830, and the latest [859 i believe]] Bare with me as I've never use spoil codes before..

BlackMamba's post already stated the solution (but I'm not sure if it'll work for you, results have varied from computer to computer).
It's worth a try anyway.

For people installing OptiFine without Forge (if you only use LiteLoader it's fine too):

I can never seem to get Optifine on my Minecraft. When I do get it on, it never stays, on day I have it, the next day I don't. It's really frustuating. I had no success doing this, but when I started the game, it wasn't there. I beginning to think I should just give up. Any suggestions?

I assume you're using Forge#789 right now (correct me if I'm wrong). OptiFine 1.6.2 HD C4 is not compatible with Forge#789.
It requires at least Forge#830.

Please post your .json and log.
And also please tell if you have any other mods (Forge? LiteLoader? etc.)
Your post does not contain enough information for us to give you any help at all.
To both of you,
Please refer to my posts above yours for an easier way to install OptiFine (I did not make the solution, it was from the OptiFine MinecraftForum official thread).
Remember, people in this thread may have already solved your problem, so make sure that you have read the previous posts here.
If the aforementioned posts doesn't help, try the MCPatcher method that UnDrac posted in the previous page (or 2 pages).
I did it the way I was supposed to and I didn't get optifine working. I'm using optifine C4 standard what would I name my folder then? (btw I'm using notepad++)
my minecraft game wont open up when i use the account lite loader chained to forge
how do i fix?
We need more information to help you. Post your .json (probably LiteLoader.json in the version folder of LiteLoader), and also include your log (that huge wall of text that scrolls when you launch your game).
Remember to put them within spoiler tags. Like this:
ok so I'm not sure what is wrong here but my liteloader.json the area you're specifying looks like this:

Remember, mod makers try to make their mods easier to install, so they'll post relevant info in their official mod threads here at MinecraftForum.
As much as possible don't download mods redistributed in other sites (I'll give some true examples of these untrustworthy sites: 9minecraft.net, 6minecraft.net) UNLESS the mod is officially hosted there (like in some sites: planetminecraft.com).

Love your mod, love forge, love optifine, why don't you all work together? xD
Using lightloader, forge and installed as instructions told me. Also running optifine in the modfolder.
Great guide.
Never gonna give you uuuuuup
Whaaaat, can't I enjoy a good and catchy song just because it's popular?

Here is what I do :
1. Clean Install
2. Launch game, close it
3. Install Forge
4. Lauch game, forge is there, close it
5. Prepare optifine's folder and line of code in file. Edit profile with line of code provided for java
6. Launch game, back to 1.6.2
For some reason when I edit the json file, I lose the capacity to load forge, it disappears from the list of selectable jar version.
Here is my launcher log and my JSON file

The post states that you need Forge#830 (and note: you just have to drag the .jar to the "mods" folder instead of making new folders as stated in the post)
There's an easier way to install OptiFine now.
Could you try reinstalling Forge?

BlackMamba's post already stated the solution (but I'm not sure if it'll work for you, results have varied from computer to computer).
It's worth a try anyway.
If it still doesn't work, read on.
OptiFine can now be installed easily.
For people installing OptiFine without Forge (if you only use LiteLoader it's fine too):
OptiFine HD C4 Ultra for Minecraft 1.6.2
(has all the features of Standard, Smooth, Multi-Core and AA, highly configurable)
The option "Video Settings -> Chunk Loading" switches between Standard, Smooth and Multi-Core chunk loading. When using "Chunk Loading: Multi-Core" make sure to Disable "Threaded Optimization" / "OpenGL Threading" in the graphics card control panel (example). For best results disable it globally, not only for java.exe or minecraft.exe.
Download OptiFine 1.6.2_HD_U_C4 (added TileEntity optimization, fixed Pixelmon compatibility, fixed connected textures for ladders and vines, fixed mobs affected by fog with fog off, added installer, double-click the JAR file to start it, loadable by Forge, just drop the JAR file in the "mods" folder and Forge should load it (Forge #830 needed for this), installing in 1.6.2.jar and with MagicLauncher still works, compatible with Forge #845): <download it from the OP>

Never gonna give you uuuuuup
Whaaaat, can't I enjoy a good and catchy song just because it's popular?

Need some help or what?
(BTW, welcome to the MinecraftForum)

I did it the way I was supposed to and I didn't get optifine working. I'm using optifine C4 standard what would I name my folder then? (btw I'm using notepad++)
We need more information to help you. Post your .json (probably LiteLoader.json in the version folder of LiteLoader), and also include your log (that huge wall of text that scrolls when you launch your game).
Remember to put them within spoiler tags. Like this:
Please refer to my post in the previous page (13) for an easier way to install OptiFine.

Ok thanks I'll see if I can find it.

Love your mod, love forge, love optifine, why don't you all work together? xD
Using lightloader, forge and installed as instructions told me. Also running optifine in the modfolder.
