btw folks. I just wanted to mention that Jeb & Robinton have been in contact (email) and Robinton will be sharing info with Jeb about his experience and solved problems with the 4096ID's tech in order to help Jeb perfect the Anvil implementation of it.
Jeb was happy to hear from Robinton about this and is looking forward to his help/info. :smile.gif:

[ Mojang hired bukkit team to create Official Server API with Client modding support]
Some Minecraft Modding-Support News:
Mojang is helping bukkit prepare for MC v1.2
4 main members of bukkit are working with Mojang, hired, to create a completely new Official Server API which will also support Client-side modding and will replace bukkit.
Today we can announce that the four main developers of bukkit ? a community-based Minecraft server implementation ? have joined ranks with Mojang to bring you the same flexibility and versatility to the official Minecraft server. The four, Warren Loo (@evilseph), Erik Broes (@_grum), Nathan Adams (@dinnerbone) and Nathan Gilbert (@tahgtahv), will work on improving both the server and the client to offer better official support for larger servers and server modifications.
The plan is to build a fresh server API, and then extend it to support client-side modding (in one way or another). We will try to make it easy for bukkit users to convert if they wish to do so, but backwards compatibility is not guaranteed. We will, however, help bukkit to be compatible with 1.2, to avoid having a long gap while you wait for the official Minecraft server to catch up.
Many of you may ask why we decided to work with bukkit instead of other Minecraft teams, such as Spout or Forge. The reason is that we want more than just modding, and these guys have always had server admins in mind when developing their additions to the game. We hope that this will help the quality of Minecraft multi-player to improve, both for large and private family servers, while still being able to add fun stuff for the bigger audience.
In addition to the bukkit members, Daniel Kaplan (@kappische) will join to handle the project lead to coordinate Minecraft?s broader goals. I (@jeb_) will remain as lead developer and game designer for Minecraft.
Sir_Trent: What you said directly relates to the issue of Minecraft finally officially raising it's default height, so on-topic enough. :wink.gif: And I agree that Minecrafts continuing evolution is definitely going in a good direction. :smile.gif:

Robinton's World Save Converter v1.6.1 is now out! He's trying to fix the Linear Chunk Mod support, including ymod support, with this version.
* Any and all testing and success/error reports for this Unique and Critical tool are wanted and encouraged! - If his DropBox crashes again I have uploaded it to my mediafire account under the Robintons Mods folder posted at the top of my OP here.
** A test is not a success unless you actually load and run the resulting world in the environment it is meant for.
- Just because the converter says it completed the conversion doesn't mean that it did it right, or at all other than making folders. I have found bugs like this recently for conversion types that used to work perfectly in older versions of the converter, so nothing can be assumed. Lets Perfect this Converter! :smile.gif:
1) Of course we want to know if all formats, including Minecraft 128 McRegion, successfully convert to and are playable in Anvil versions of Minecraft, starting with Snapshot 12w07b. (The loss of world data above the height of shorter formats is acceptable and unnavoidable).
2) Do Anvil worlds successfully convert to and are playable in all other formats? (The loss of world data above the height of shorter formats is acceptable and unnavoidable).
3) Do conversions between all other supported formats, such as Cubic Chunks and Linear Chunk (Minecraft Extended Height format) Mods work and can they be played? (The loss of world data above the height of shorter formats is acceptable and unnavoidable).

Robinton has successfully converted an old format Cubic Chunks World to fishtaco's Height Mod format and it played fine! Then he converted that world from fishtaco to the most current Cubic Chunks format and it worked!
Bad News
Do not, very seriously, do not even try to convert anything to ymod with this version. At least not an old Cubic to ymod 512. I'm reporting the issue to Robinton now.
If you need to convert an old Cubic to ymod, for now use v1.31 of the converter. I have it in my mediafire folder at the top of OP here.
** With Robinton's newest version of the World Save Converterv1.6.1 you can now convert your Cubic World to Anvil format then MCEdit it then convert it back into Cubic format!
+(Disclaimer)+ Converting Cubic worlds into Anvil format will DESTROY everything below y=0 and everything higher than y = 255...
++ Hopefully FULL Cubic support will be added into MCEdit now that it is Open Source (Python).

btw: Those who manage Threads might want to check out my Forum Bug Report. Especially the Ampersand Bug and the Lesser Than and Greater Than Bug.
Please add a note of support for a solution to these bugs in the report thread. They are causing me all kinds of grief. Thanks!
It looks like it converts almost every world format type that has ever existed for Minecraft including Anvil, MCRegion, all Height Mods including Cubic Chunks. It even has a built in NBT-Viewer. Robinton really outdid himself with this version.
btw: It converts both ways between any format or height. Just remember though; Converting from a tall world to a small one will make you lose any blocks outside of the small worlds range. So converting from Anvil 256 to McRegion 128 will make you permanently lose the top of any buildings or whatever that go above y=128.
Enjoy!
Also; Please test this with every type of Height Modded world you can find and let us know the results, please! Does anyone have a Spoutcraft world they can test this with?
Just for the record, I was never able to get in contact with anyone at Mojang. Either I wasn't persistent enough in sending emails or they never got around to returning them.
Anyway, here are two files you'll need to update when any new blocks or items are added:
What the above guy said. Been lurking and following you guys for a while... with the 256 height increase, and a bit of testing on Wedge, it seems the game doesn't deal very well with blocks up to the height limit, and the current chunks.
Trust me when I say that it takes a very, very long time to dig that deep. I made a 2x2 shaft all the way to bedrock (-32,000) and it took me several months. It would have taken longer except I used a flying mod to decrease vertical travel time.
MineCrack,
do you know whose mods are updating for the 1.2.3 ?because i do very big building and i wait for this mod impatiently
(sorry for my poor english )
The Good news is that the Cubic Chunks Mod WILL be updated for mc 1.2.4! And it's vertical limit will be bumped up to 4.2 billion blocks/meters.
Spoutcraft should be as well. In fact, the newest dev builds of Spoutcraft support 1.2.3 right now but I'm not clear on how to get them...
Ivorius will also be bringing MineT3485's MineUp! Mod back from the dead with even more flexibility and options! I hope it will be back for v1.2.4 but it's not clear if it will be back in time for 1.2.4 or if it won't be until 1.3.0. Either way it's something fun to look forward too.

Will this be updated shortly after? A week after? A guess?
Hmm. Well, The Cubic Chunks Mod takes quite a few hours non-stop just to upgrade versions for, and that's with a simple conversion. There's nothing simple about the upgrade to the totally revamped Anvil quasi-cubic version of minecraft for a Height mod like Cubic.
The good news is that Robinton had already converted maybe 15% of CC to 1.2.3, between that and his successful work with his Save Converter Anvil upgrade he has become very familiar with the 1.2.x series of Minecraft so he believes that will help him with the 1.2.4 upgrade.
In addition to that though he is having to also make new decisions about certain aspects of formatting for Cubic Chunks due to Anvil and 4.2 billion etc. The 4.2 billion is more straight forward though, he's known how to do that for a long time now.
I don't know, myself, how to give an estimate on this other than to say he sounds like he will start working on it as soon as the MCP for 1.2.4 is out. And he sounds excited about it again. This new version will open up possibilities for Minecraft that have never existed before.
Also; he's been working on Server versions again in the recent past so we may be seeing some great things! Oh yeah; did I mention that he will be adding a World-Type for Cubic Chunks Super Mountainous Terrain? There are all kinds of Terrain experiments to be done.

Holy crap man, that was gonna be my next question - if there were any plans for some sort of terrain generation. I don't expect anything extreme of course, given that I figure it might take some work to make it work with 4.2 million (or billion, my god) blocks of height.
But... CC Super Mountainous Terrain? Honestly, that's my dream right there. While mountains - even the awesome ones created with the Wedge terrain gen mod - are fun, they're not really epic. An epic mountain, in my mind, would be one that might take a week of in-game time to scale or pass. One that could truly be a landmark of your world. If you guys get the terrain to make mountains even 3oo blocks high, that would be epic.
Speaking of Wedge though... I do have a more important question. How will CC work with regards to java memory? With the vanilla height up to 256, I understand that means standard chunks are 16x256x16 (or whatever order is correct). With Wedge, the terrain makes use of the full limit, or close to it. Unfortunately, this leads to java memory filling up within 15 minutes, and an inevitable crash (every time). Its unfortunate. Am I right in understanding that CC should prevent this, even with terrain that high?

Regarding mountains: Well, actually; Since v1.5.2 of CC in mc b1.7.3 and all versions for mc b1.8.1 CC has had some PhoenixTerrainMod features converted into it which could make massive terrain features. They didn't make it into the 1.0 feature list though. -- One thing more than anything else slowed things down, stupid caves... Caves generating everywhere in 1000m tall mountains around you.. Thankfully you could turn caves off or set them to "1" so that they were greatly reduced, this made a difference.
It is clear that having huge terrain all around you combined with farther viewing distance will clearly require more memory then shorter viewing distance. The only solution to that is to continue optimizing the games ability to only load what is visible. Robinton and Nocte will likely be working together regarding that over time.
My understand of the new Anvil format is that it is quasi-cubic now and not really/exactly using 16x256x16 chunks like the old Linear Chunks mods did. I don't think the problem you are seeing with the huge Wedge terrain is due to chunk size so much as it is just caused by view distance and Minecraft still loading all blocks in that view distance instead of only what should be visible. Minecraft can sort of skip loading "air" blocks which is why normal terrain with increased height runs fine, but actual filled blocks must be loaded in their entirety...
Really, the entire way that maps and voxels are loaded and handled would need to be changed to be something like Nocte's Hexahedra project where it only sends you the blocks you can see and actually builds up a rendered surface map in your save file that remains and doesn't need to be reloaded, speeding things up a lot. -- Minecraft might never undergo such a huge change but CC perhaps could someday..

Ahh, I see, that makes more sense. Well, either way, I'll wait for the CC mod to be released to the current version (or next one that is), and if I get the issue, I'll fiddle around with java memory, and view distance.
That's all the questions I have for now - thanks for the thorough answers! Can't wait to see this when its done, its gonna be one of Minecraft's most talked about mods, I think. If it isn't already.
Oh man... if you guys manage to add the Super Mountains terrain gen... you guys should look into Ravines.
Ravines are cool as they are now, but think of what they could be like with a nearly unlimited limit. Grand Canyon generation perhaps? Thousand-block deep trenches?
