Hello! I just upgraded to Windows 10, and unfortunately discovered that my Minecraft launcher was not working correctly. In the course of fixing it, I encountered two seperate errors: first "EOFException: SSL peer shut down incorrectly", and then "java.lang.NullPointerException: group". I am addressing both in one thread because I believe they may be closely related. As it took two days of exhaustive searching to find the answers, I would like to spare anyone else who may be encountering these problems the same kind of difficulty.
EOFException: SSL peer shut down incorrectly
As previously-stated, I encountered this problem immediately after updating to Windows 10. I made no changes to Minecraft before or after the update. I did not have any mods installed. When I started the Minecraft launcher, the only option it gave me was "Play Offline" without ever giving me the option of multiplayer. I restarted the launcher, restarted my computer, deleted the .minecraft folder, uninstalled and reinstalled Java, disabled my firewall, and even completely uninstalled my antivirus software without any success.
3) Download the second, lower option, "Minecraft.exe". It is different from the top one!
4) Run Minecraft.exe on your computer.
You should find that you will now be able to access multiplayer. HOWEVER, this was not the end of my problems. Though I could get to the multiplayer screen, I now encountered a new error message when I tried to connect to any server:
java.lang.NullPointerException: group
How I fixed it:
1) Start the Minecraft launcher.
2) On the lower left-hand corner, click "Edit Profile".
3) At the bottom, click the checkbox for "JVM Arguments" and paste this onto the end (don't erase what is already there!): -Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true
After doing this, I was able to successfully log-in to multiplayer servers. I hope that these solutions solve any difficulties you may have, but if they don't, I recommend making sure that your Java is up-to-date and also making sure that your firewall isn't blocking Minecraft for some reason. I did not have to delete my .minecraft folder to fix this problem, as I pasted the old one back in and it works quite fine now.
I agree! I'm not sure if my case is a rarity or not, but even when I completely uninstalled my antivirus software it still didn't help. I reckon that since there can be so many things that can go wrong, many people can get the same error and have vastly different solutions.
Do you have Covenant Eyes on your computer? I had the same issue recently, and figured out that Covenant Eyes was incompatible with Minecraft in Windows 10. They recently fixed the issue in a beta download that you can get.

I do indeed have it! Interesting... did you uninstall CovenantEyes before upgrading to Windows 10, and then reinstall it afterward? Before I upgraded, I looked on their website and it stated that it wouldn't work with the upgrade if you left it installed. It is supposed to be compatible with Windows 10 if you install it after upgrading, though.
Minecraft is working for me now, and I haven't had any other problems with CE since upgrading, but I will be sure to check that out! Thank you for posting that!
Programs like ConvenantEyes will break Java programs like Minecraft if they attempt to proxy SSL connections because the SSL certificate won't validate.

How I fixed it:
1) Uninstall the Minecraft launcher.
2) Go to this link: https://minecraft.net/en/download/alternative. This is the page where you can download older versions of the launcher.
3) Download the second, lower option, "Minecraft.exe". It is different from the top one!
4) Run Minecraft.exe on your computer.

Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner!
