I have spent quite some time searching for an answer to my question, but came up short.
Is it possible to have a minecraft server hosted on a domain? I have an old domain that has unlimited bandwidth and storage, I would like to have it host a server directly without having it redirect to a local machine in my home. Is it possible? And if so, can anyone point me to some documentation on how to set it up.
You are wording your question wrong. A domain is just a DNS record that translates human friendly words to IPs; they do not host anything. They point to stuff. What you are likely actually trying to ask is if you can you host a Minecraft server on a web hosting account. Depends on the provider, but likely not. Do you have full access to the hosting server, or at least SSH? If not, you are hosed.
PS, there is no such thing as unlimited bandwidth/storage. You may have unlimited in the billing sense, but from a max capacity standpoint nothing is unlimited

Yes, sorry, I had meant my web hosting service. I have contacted them to see if it is possible.
