I'm renting a dedicated minecraft server, but when it comes to hardware I really have no idea what I'm doing. Never built a PC, most I've done is swap a ram card a couple years ago. I was hoping you guys could tell me if I'm getting a good deal or not. This is what I'm currently renting for $205 a month:
Thats what I've been running on for about 3 months with little issues. In 2 days I will be ugprading to this for $235 a month:
Processor: E3-1230V2 Ram: 32GB DDR3 RAM Storage: 2x 128GB Samsung 830 SSD's in RAID 0 + 500GB HDD Connection: 100mbps Bandwidth: 5TB Bandwidth Operating System: Windows Server 2008 Web Location: Dallas, Texas
Theres a couple things I'm concerned about. When they said they had set it up the first thing i did was download some software to run a benchmark on the read and write speed of the SSDs to see how much faster it was.
As you can see its actually slowed down. When i PM'd them about it they told me that the SSD's were in RAID 1, even though i specifically asked in the order for them to be in RAID 0. From my understanding RAID 0 = fast but less reliable and RAID 1 = more reliable but slower. So of course i asked them to put them in RAID 0 and they responded saying that they are going to put them in a RAID 1 array and I'm not even sure what that is although they assure me it will be faster. So i took the server down so they could do the change about 8 hours ago and they havent responded yet.
Another thing I'm concerned about is that when i googled the 128GB Samsung 830 SSD it says that its for notebooks. Not sure if thats a bad thing or not.
I dont have enough knowledge of hardware to know what I'm getting so if you guys could help me out i would really appreciate it.
Stay with RAID 1, your data is important, not speed. Also 193MB/s, that is fast enough and overkill for almost anything.
Raid 0 = double performance tbh, but one drive "SSD" fails and you lose ALL your data.
Raid 1 = First SSD is mirrored onto other SSD. If either SSD fails, your data is there.
You are getting a fair deal, that is for sure. Esp for 35 bucks average more.
Just make sure you can use that server to your money worth, hosting 1 minecraft on it, isnt gonna be good. You will be losing money on that then, so host about 3 or 4.
The new server you are getting, can easy handle 4 heavy minecraft servers "or more".

Yeah thats what I've heard. Thats why i also asked them to include the 500GB HDD. I was going to run regular full server backups every 12 hours or something onto the HDD. Still not sure what a RAID 1 array is though.

Hmm, never thought of managing multiple servers, but there is some things I would like to try. The first couple months i was running my server i was making about $1000 profit on the server. Since school started its slowed down quite a bit, but its still sustaining itself which is all i really wanted.

If you do backups to HDD, then by all means go RAID 0 SSDs.
RAID 1, pretty much what is written on first SSD/HDD, is copied to a second one.
However I would suggest getting gigabit "1Gbs" instead 100Mbs if you plan to host more then 4 Minecraft servers. However it varies on how many players also each server may have.

Yeah, they say that i can upgrade to 1gbs for an extra $50 a month. Dont really have a reason to yet since I'm only running one server.
Yes, but whats a RAID 1 array? It must be different from RAID 1 since they say they are changing me from RAID 1 to a RAID 1 array.

They are the same by what im aware, unless duplexing "but same tbh".
No, just keep it in mind though on net speed. 100Mbs is plenty for up to 4 servers, unless they have a lot of players.
And sadly I cannot answer anymore posts at moment, must go to bed. Some others should be coming online in awhile. Esp the ones who can help you more on server working then I can.

These were the results for the new server:

Hmm, alright. I was thinking of even running my map on a ramdisk for extra speed, not sure if i need that anymore though lol.

Yeah thats what I thought at first. Also why i was getting skeptical. Seemed like it was too good lol.

Uh, that doesn't make any sense. He was referring to OP's speeds vs normal SSD speeds, not OP's speeds vs RAID0 speeds.
