I do not support the new ad technique Curse is using. This is a direct byproduct of Curse becoming the owner of many gaming sites. I really don't mind the ads on the top and sides of the forum. I spend the majority of the time I spend browsing the forum on my iPad and have had an enjoyable time with the non intrusive ads that existed before now. I have always associated this type of ad with tiny websites that I question whether or not they are legal. I feel they have no respect for the user experience. One example is wtso.net or minecraftdl.com. I also associate this type of ad with sites that provide low quality content. That is simply not true with MC forums. I have always loved the community feel of these forums and enjoyed the news articles. I have felt that Curse has always respected and tried to improve the user experience; until now. From what I have read (I haven't tried it for myself yet) these new ads can't be blocked with Adblock or programs similar. This is something that is not right. Users should be able to have the choice to see the ads or not if that is what makes their experience more enjoyable. The problem for the user in this situation is that they want this wonderful content but don't want the ads. This forces the true gamer and new gamers that want to expand their knowledge of a game to view these ads. This will probably result in less traffic, fewer new users, and a general attitude of anger and frustration toward Curse. Bottom line: these new ads are not a good idea AT ALL.
Thanks for reading all this, I thought I should give my two cents in this matter.
These ads are suppose to bring in more revenue, when in reality they will not get any money because everyone will turn on ad block because it is so annoying.
Here you go, IMO it takes up way too much screen space.
1/5th of an already limited screen space.
And i am unable to close the advert.
On my computer it is fine, although, this move is making it harder and harder for mobile users to browse this website, as if it wasnt hard enough already.
I would be perfectly fine with this change if you developed a mobile version of this website.
And someone earlier pointed out that there is a lot of unused space at either side of the forums, which has been used for advertising in the past - they were problematic because they were big and scrolled with the screen, however, replaced with conventional picture (not flash) advertising it would work fine.
I guess on some devices it is worse than others, us laptop/desktop users can use AdBlock. I won't be using (Apple) mobile devices on this site anymore it appears, due to them lacking Adblock.
What's the name of your device? I'll also forward that to the advertisement team.
It will be the same on any tablet that is being viewed horizontally rather than vertically if i am correct.
It is an ASUS Transformer TF700T running the latest Android Jellybean 4.1.1
The picture is of Chrome browser but it looks exactly the same on the default browser too.
I also have an older Transformer for testing if that is needed too.
Part that bugs me, is it's stated that this setup is supposed to be less obtrusive, and less forced on the user, only appearing when page is scrolled. But really, how can you expect a user not to scroll on a forum? Still forced. And it scrolls with the page? Still obtrusive, if not moreso.
I'm always fascinated by that kind of double-speak... I can never figure out if people who say things like that have actually convinced themselves it's true, or if they're just hoping people won't notice how ridiculous they sound, or what.
Thanks a bunch Nyanneko, your advice did the trick. no more annoying as nether ad.
And please pass this on to the advertising team: Shame on you for your intrusive soliciting! If you want to sell things, the best way to do it is to build a customers trust, not make them cringe at your approach! Such destructive/annoying methods of advertising will never win out. We, the customers, will always find a way around you, because there are billions more of us than there are you. If you want to sell things, stop investing in techniques that will only push us away, because we do not tolerate such abuse!
If you're extremely dedicated on keeping it there, at least allow us to block it via Adblock.
I use chrome, and it's just a black screen when it shows up, so you might as well.....

There is heaps of space around the page which would be better. Here is a screenshot of my idea.
Only one ad would be needed, I just wanted to show the available space they could use.
Not only would it allow for bigger ads, but two big ads could be run simultaneously (one on each side).
Honestly, if it means they won't make a dime from me with this new crap, and I can distribute it to others who want it, I'm game for scripting it.
No just the one, I was just trying to point out the available space they could use.
Thanks for reading all this, I thought I should give my two cents in this matter.

I understand now. I'm not sure what I was getting at

Use Nyannekos advice and get adblock plus, and the the two lists they gave. Those will get rid of it entirely, not just black it out.
