So this may seem a bit odd of a topic, but this is fascinating.
How much of an affect do you think profile pictures and icons have on the web-based community?
For instance, when you see a poster with the black and white Steve icon, the first assumption is often that they are Newly Spawned. . . but they just so happen to be a Void Walker.
This can happen vice versa as well. For instance, when you see someone with a fine piece of art for a pic, it subconsciously fits the definition that this person is of higher rank, say a diamond miner. . . yet they are still a carpenter.
Their picture can also lead to "judging a book by its cover". If the picture represents that of authority, you may automatically think that they would have a higher rank, or they could be a moderator. Or, the picture could be just the opposite, and you might automatically expect them to have poor forum etiquette and etc. . .
The visual processing of the brain may have a lot more to do with the reputation that you give others, and the reputation that you attract to yourself than you think. After reading this, you may want to change your profile picture, or you may want to analyze who's pics could have affected you the most.
Let me know what you think, and share your experiences on this thread.
I don't really see greysteves with high post counts, just about anyone who's been around that long has picked something by then even if it's boring, but I do keep getting surprised by new spawn and tree punchers with gorgeous avatars!
Having a great avatar is pretty important to me, and I definitely think other people pay attention whether they mean to or not! Here's one example that's bugging me lately: ever since I switched to this avatar and stopped using all pink text, I've gotten a lot less attention! Less rep, fewer quotes, fewer replies to my topics, fewer profile visits, everything! It could just be coincidence I guess but I really believe it's because the bright colors were drawing them in! I wasn't even doing it for the attention but you can bet I notice the difference now!
Oh, and I know I need a new signature, I want one of those fancy personal banners but I'm still trying to work out the composition. Everything has to be just right to give the... impression I want! But it's not going well, I just can't seem to find any middle ground between "overt" and "not even hinted at"!

"Sometimes, I just wanna give up, say 'I'm done with this mess' and go to bed. But you know what; you can't shrug off your responsibilities. You got to pull yourself up and meet the challenges head on. That's the only way you're gonna get ahead in life."
It's by far hard to give someone rep that they deserve. To me, it's something that's meant to be for something truly, honest-to-god awesome. Although, someone with an interesting-looking avatar usually takes my attention.
I look at an avatar before the username, and recognize the person by his/her avatar. If it's someone I've never seen before, I'll associate the username and avatar together. Sometimes, I don't even pay attention to the username, only the avatar, thinking that to be the way I'll remember them.
When someone changes their avatar, it can throw me off. MQHelper would know what I'm talking about
As for the 'judging a book by it's cover', I find that to be done subconsciously most of the time. It does seem to be a thing your brain associates with post quality, then puts two and two together without you realizing it. That's initially anyway.

That's a great way to put it. In my opinion, I feel that having an avatar and a good one is important as it is a form of identity and it is a great way to remember someone by. That's why having a good and unique avatar is important, not only does it make you stand out from the rest. Sometimes, you might associate someone with a better avatar to have good quality posts. This may not be necessarily true, because some members with default avatars may be extremely profound.
Like what Raynbow said, you can't judge a book by its cover. Somehow, we do that all the time without realizing it.

The MCPatcher man still has a steve avatar. Look, it doesn't really matter much unless the avatar is hideous or something inappropriate. People have different tastes, that's all.
Your avatar is your identity. Perfect example of this is Mojang staff we quickly identify the style and know who they are without even looking. Notch's hat instantly makes you think its Notch which is why none of the other guys have hats on =). We don't have faces on the internet except for people who use their own pictures. All of the same things that apply to a logo apply to an avatar.

If you are someone who needs to brand themselves because of a texture pack/mod/map or something as such they need a brand identity think of all of the popular texture packs it is why they are so successful just no one ever sits and analyzes it (unfortunately its natural for me lol). In situations like MCpatcher and things like that they aren't popular because of the trust and want they are popular due to pure need and referrals which puts them in a different category all together.
When I read posts, my mind tends to give them the sort of voice that their avatar looks like he/she would have...unless their avatar doesn't look like a face, in which case I ignore it and assign the voice based solely on the words they say. (For instance, the OP's avatar looked enough unlike a face to me that I ignored it and assumed a generic guy voice.)
If someone's avatar is a trollface, I'll strongly suspect them of wanting to test rules' limits and mess with people's heads, but other avatars have less of an effect on my impressions of people. If I'm skimming a thread with many posts, maybe I'm more likely to pause and read a post by someone with a cool-looking avatar than a post by a graysteve or creeper. But overall, I think I judge people much more by what they post than by how their avatars look...as far as I can tell.
You know, I still actually have a little bit of an assumption on whether or not one would be resourceful or not, although I wouldn't believe myself in such things anymore. Nowadays, signatures and avatars are used for identifications. That's it. You may not know that behind a simplistic, nice-looking avatar lies a really absurd and abrasive individual. You just don't know.
What do I look, however, is their punctuation, grammar, spelling...technically their posts in general. THAT's what matters. You can easily judge someone via that media, and then gives out conclusions on whether or not one is alright. I figured that people might have known about this anyway, so I'm not going into depth. But again, posts quality in general is better than judging one by avatar or signature. I've had quite a few users that had decent avatars/signatures, but really is just an amazing person.

I'm leaving the forum, if anyone cared. You can find me on OC or FFR.
People express what they would like to be viewed as by their avatar.
If it's of cats, you could assume they like cats. Similarly, if it is of a cat with a cross on it, you could assume they do NOT like cats. An avatar is really a picture of someones identity on the web; be it real or fake; you shouldn't judge people based on it by having a prejudice but sadly, many people do, myself included.
This is not at all true, in many ways. Some people will use an avatar as a way of advertisement whether it be for a map or a texture pack. Some are dependent on the holiday, or just to try to act funny. Sometimes it is to show your favorite actor, singer, etc. I would defiantly not say all people wished to be viewed as by their avatar, probably not even half.
Actually, both happen quite frequently I imagine. I for example, have a Dungeons & Dragons pic because I want to be recognized as a role-player.
I think the advertisement part is more for the signature, not the avatar.

Ignore the snapshot thingy for the last one.
I don't understand why those are so popular among newbs.

Whaleman finds that people with grey steve avatars tend to be completely ignored in topics.
I've seen folks holler that people are dishonest if they don't show their own face in their profile/avatar.
I've seen folks holler that a drawing of a body part equals the same thing as the body part in regards to avatars. But it is "art" elsewhere.
I've seen folks holler that people with a cartoon pony in their avatar, are less than those with real ponies.
I've seen folks naked in their avatars
I've seen Avatar in an avatar, though I have never seen an avatar from Avatar in an avatar.
I've seen claims that avatar, the word, sounds weird after you have said avatar several times
As for Minecraft related avatars... the only thing I have noticed, the best ones are animated. (Opinion)
