People are confused what Starting up/Looking for section actually was.
The section was NEVER meant to be for new servers. Its main purpose was for upcoming servers to find staff and builders.
Don't blame us when we remove it because people have no idea/don't care what should be posted in there.
As I said again, we have some ideas about a section for new servers. We can't however make very specific sections as proposed earlier.
And as I said before, we try to 'slow' down the survival/creative section. We're going to crack down on the amount of bump posts, duplicate threads and spam/off topic posts from players in big server threads.

I think some on the confusion about that section was because it was sub-sectioned under the regular survival section so people assumed starting up/looking for server meant Servers starting up and people looking for servers. Honestly even though it may have not been used as intended it was 100 times more useful to us small server owners looking for players then just hoping to be seen in the 15 seconds you are on front in the survival section. Atleast we could find people who were actually looking for things specific to our own servers. While not meant for small servers I really do not believe it bothered many that new servers posted there. I always liked seeing people starting up and creating new exciting servers. I understand that yes it probably was a headache catching them once they got a bit bigger and moving them to the survival section but atleast by then they had a few regulars that could help them find more players as opposed to starting in the survival section such as myself and it taking literally weeks before getting off the ground whatsoever if they ever get off at all.
i would like to see some sort of resolution to this too.
the root of the conflict seems to be:
server owners - need a more effective way to recruit players
minecraft forums - dont want their forums spammed
the problems encountered are:
for server owners - our server threads get buried nearly instantly.
for minecraft forums - server owners are not soliciting their servers in the correct sections
i think both sides are in agreement that there is currently no acceptable solution in place.
as a server owner myself, i must elaborate on our side of the discussion. the spam in question is not inherently a nuisance, there is a legitimate need for it. the forums are currently set up in a way where a handful of big server monopolize all the views. small servers may get a couple players out of their post before they are inevitably buried. then the server owner is forced to choose between no new players for their server or risk punishment just to get a couple views. as it stands, we are not on a level playing field.
it seems minecraft forums needs to choose one of the following paths:
1) only promote the largest servers - as is being done now through natural selection
2) promote no servers - i can think of no reason why this would be a good thing
3) revamp the forums in such a way as to give the little guys a fighting chance
the real questions are is can there be some sort of mechanism put in place lets server owners recruit new people and keeps minecraft forums clean of spam?
I really think the easiest solution would be to divide the servers by slot size. Obviously you would have to decide on size cut offs such as 0-20 small 21-40 medium ect ect with 100+ or so being considered mega or massive. Another thing to help cut down it perhaps a whitelisted and a non whitelisted section, anything to make it easier to find servers then just the mass pit of them that exists now.
agreed. i think the sooner this is fixed the better. i am a perfect example of this. i started a server 5 days ago and was COUNTING on being able to get players from this forum as it is the only reliable source of gathering players on the web. i was making good progress the first couple days but i have yet to hit the "critical mass".
i define critical mass as the point where you have enough players that it keeps their interest. if you dont have enough players then the ones you do have leave the server to find a better experience elsewhere.
so i have a handful of good players that i desperately want to keep but i am worried they may wander off due to lack of other players. i cant say i really blame them either.
I came here for a number of reasons. Firstly, I had a thread in the startup section that got locked. So I came here looking for an explanation. I recently tried to post a server about to go online (not the same server as above) on the mega-server-cluster-**** on the survival mainpage and it barely lasted a few minutes before it got bumped off the page.
How are small servers supposed to compete with the bigger servers in the same section? It's impossible! Big servers get their posts bumped every couple of minutes so new and potential players are all directed toward their threads. Because of this, small server threads receive almost no traffic and die out so quick. Yes, I understand that some small servers look like **** in the OP, but there are plenty of good ones that never get the chance to succeed.
The idea I was going to suggest has already been suggested. Divide the server section based on server size. It's that simple. No amount of increased moderating will neutralize the advantage that big servers have over little servers. I applaud the efforts of the admin team to try and fix the problem, but the solution you are using won't work. Servers should ultimately be arranged into sections based on size. This is the most plausible and realistic solution to fix this problem.
- Think about how we're going to give new servers a fair chance.
- Think about how to fill the need for a "Looking for" section
- Punish owners of (big) servers who abuse the forums by letting their staff/users bump/spam.
- Making it impossible for people to make a lot of server threads in a short amount of time to combat spam.
- Increase our server staff team
If you have more comments/questions/suggestions please PM me.
But as for now I'm going to lock this thread.

We could have these types:
Vanilla
No mods whatsoever
Survival
PVP, griefing, PVE, etc. are allowed.
PVP
The type of server that is set up to have combat almost 24/7
role playing
Any kind of roleplay server. THis includes basic roleplay, prison servers, drug wars, etc.
Building
Creative servers, protected building, etc.
i define critical mass as the point where you have enough players that it keeps their interest. if you dont have enough players then the ones you do have leave the server to find a better experience elsewhere.

so in my case, this is really bad timing!
This was what I was going to suggest!
Sorting the forum by type will DRAMATICALLY increase rate of proper usage!
It's the perfect solution!
