I personally think anything short of a permaban is a warning and the actual permaban the punishment. Think about it like that and the system of any forum makes sense.
I'd rather not have to use my imagination for that to make sense.

I personally believe getting warned for posting in a marked thread is rediculous. Im a moderator thrice and an admin, on different forums around the internets. Moderation is meant to enforce the ideals of the userbase. If users choose to post in a thread, then THEY are choosing to keep that thread alive, thereby it's not spam, but instead a new conversation. If nobody posts in a spam thread, then it will die of it's own accord. Yeah, I know this forum has the #chans and /i/ gunning for it, but there's no need for the mods to highten strictness to the point where they're alienating it's userbase.
And if an inappropriate thread starts getting views, willing participants (porn posters) get the warn, and neighsayers ("This is NOT family freindly guise!") get nothing. You then simply lock and delete thread. Extra 1-2 minute(s).

Look above. I post thru my itouch and I accidentally sent my post when I was in the middle of editing it. I've updated it to include responce to such replies.
EDIT: HOWever, I will not say what works perfectly fine for me, works for you. I completely understand you have more stress in this on forum than I do in at least two of my forums. I don't mod/admin huge forums that net thousands upon thousands of replies daily. So I'll give you that. (that being said, more mods could alleviate that -.-)

Our job as moderators is to keep the community to clean. If the ideals of our community suddenly shift to memeposting and pornography, we're not going to let it go because it's "the ideals of our community." We are going to lock each and every post, and have a lot of bannings.
It's cut and dry- posting spam is against the rules. It doesn't matter if the whole conversation is spam, it's going to be removed.
I never said standard rules should apply to the topicshift idea, but I realize i never said they shouldn't either, so that is my fault. I could've made that clearer. Of course, if a topic becomes a porniest, apportion the correct punishments to every one who participated. But say this - I post in a one-post-wonder's "lookit my happy funhouse!!!11!1!one", talking about details I like and how he can make his house better. But because it's considered a spam thread, do I deserve a warn? LOLNO. Say a bot posts a thread "lookit my happy funporn!!!11!1!one" and I post "Reported" in the thread. It's not as clear cut, but do I deserve a ban for expressing I reported the thread to the community? No, especially because I'm helping out the mods.
Now say someone posts the house thread again. This time, I post "awesome. +1 rep." should I get a ban? I would say no, because I'm simply expressing my enjoyment of the material. You might say yes, because to you, it's worthless.
Now, in a thread strictly against the rules, it would depend. I think the same post might constitute a warn.
But look at it this way: SPAM equals a (S)mall (P)ointless (A)nnoying (M)essage. I can say small pointless annoying things in things in real life all I want. Does that give the cops the right to bust a cap in my mouth?
Think on it.

Moderation is meant to enforce the ideals of the userbase.
That's...not what moderation is about. Forum moderation is about keeping things in order, and making sure things don't get out of hand, per rules-as-written. If the rules just happen to jive with the community, that's great. The two are not mutually inclusive, however.
It's been said before, but it bears repeating: the board owners/administration set the guidelines and overall "feel" of their community, and it is their right, since they own it. Moderators enforce those guidelines as instructed. There are no "free speech" clauses or rights of any kind on forums, save what are given. No one - not one single person - is entitled to do what they want in flagrant defiance of established rules.
Grievances with established rules can be taken up with those responsible for them, and should be, if anyone feels that strongly about them.
Also,
Say a bot posts a thread "lookit my happy funporn!!!11!1!one" and I post "Reported" in the thread. It's not as clear cut, but do I deserve a ban for expressing I reported the thread to the community? No, especially because I'm helping out the mods.
Reporting the thread is helping the mods. Posting that it's reported does nothing but bump the topic, and add a point to your post-count. :smile.gif:

I believe that's worth restating. I've lived on forums where the rules are generally set by a tightly knit userbase. I understand that mods enforce the rules. I'm just used to forums where users do their best to follow and enforce the rules as well :tongue.gif:
Edit: I don't care about post count. Trust me, it's the thing I least care about. That's why I wish all forums had rep systems. Sadly, there are always the forums where the userbase is split, and there'll be rep abusers.

Your phone's autocorrect is funny. I've never seen "porniest" before!
Regardless, you need to keep in mind that we're not cops, and we're not sworn to uphold some constitutional law. This is a generous authoritarian regime. Admins make the rules, and we have to enforce them, and you have to abide by them. This is a private forum. You can say pointless annoying crap all you want in real life, but this isn't real life. You've effectively stepped into someones house, and you are now a guest- the homeowner has every right to kick you out because you keep bringing up small pointless annoying crap.
Posting something contributory in a "look at my house!" thread is not warning worthy.
Posting "+1 this is awesome" in a spam thread? That is warning worthy- you've just posted a one-liner of spam, clearly against the rules.
Posting "reported" in a spambot thread? Yes, that deserves a warning, too. You're actually not helping at all by posting in the thread, you're making it worse. You're bumping the topic back up to the top of the board, so even more people get to see it. The report is the helpful part.

From the way not only you, but many other users talked, it sounded like the spam is ALWAYS at the top anyway.
And I'm guessing one-liners are against the rules due to forum memory space restrictions, and admin doesn't want to clog server? Such a typical problem of mega-forums. If not that though, what's the problem with one-liners? Worthless, but very little harm done.

Worthless, non-contributory, and don't lead to anything but more spam posts. Just bad in general. If the community didn't feel the need to fire their LOSCs (read: low orbit spam cannons) constantly, then we'd probably just let the one-liners slide. But it's just too much, and if left unchecked, would spread like a zombie virus.

Well then. I can't argue that at all. When the community itself is causing overzealous moderation, that's an unarguable problem that can only be fixed through community maturity. Seeing the low-age demographics of this forum, though, it'll probably never happen.
On a happier note, it's eatin' time. Thai food and spiciness ftw
Edit: however, community immaturity doesn't excuse what I've been understanding to have been happening EG: users getting banned/warned due to totally legitamate posts in threads that become innapropriate.

Although it is important to keep the community running smoothly by moderating harshly, the line has been crossed.
I got a ban on my main forums account for posting 2 "spam posts"
1. I've seen people do that many times before, the first one being a *facepalm* although it is a bit strict, I understand.
2. A post that actually contributes to the topic, and is helpful.

to this I say with the highest extent, WTF.
It's clearly outlined in the rules that two warnings for spam gets you a three day ban.
Heck even I was banned for 3 days for 2 spam posts, but I didn't whine or make accounts to ban evade, I just took the enforced break.
1. I don't see how facepalm is at all contributive. Just because others get away with it does not mean it's OK.
2. If you think you were unfairly warned, contact an admin or moderator.

You guys always say that here, but when people actually do that, all they get is a 'this warning was justified' and you just know the mod did not even look at it.

Exactly my point! You, Timbor, took the words out of my mouth! If you (moderators) tell us to contact an admin about an unfair punishment, you (moderators) just say its justified!

3. The reason I created another account was because I believe that it was an unfair punishment. Of course, you moderators would never believe something like that, being all brainwashed and having to much fun with your responsibilities.
I know Citric provided an email to contact him with if you need help, I think it's [email protected] or something along these lines :ohmy.gif:

No offence to you, mods, but you need to put forth a bit more though before warning someone.

No harm is being done and warning everyone who posted is absurd. Lock the thread, send the OP a PM telling him not to do that again and move on.
Why was this user warned?
The current system of warnings is really, really unbalanced and getting warned for posting in a spammy thread is beyond absurd. If you MUST warn people for posting in a spam thread then give them something like half a warning or something like that. I saw someone get warned yesterday for posting a video outside the video thread, and the mod said he was "advertising his minecraft video"...
I was permabanned once for doing things like calling someone's computer stupid, posting a joke, and some other **** I can't remember, so yes, I am a bit biased towards the quality of warnings, if not the sanity of the mods. I usually just ignore stuff like this though (I actually thought the mod team was improving till now), but now it's getting ridiculous. Posting a joke, posting an image, posting in a spammy thread, or anything like that should not be punishable with a warning, especially when 4 such small infractions can result in your permanently being banned from the forum. If you're going to make rules to improve the quality of these forums and the experience of the users, you might not want to be chopping heads off along the way. There was nothing wrong with people posting threads in the beta forum with their own big projects or creative things they've built. That's what made that section interesting. The users were in control of what was being posted, but now they're all forced into one place, apparently for the good of all users (which doesn't make much sense). The picture thread is ineffective when wanting to actually get some feedback on your work or discuss certain aspects of Minecraft. You apparently can't even tell anyone that their screenshots, buildings, or world is nice without getting warned.
some major problems where i got a warning for a one word post but the other FIVE people who posted one word no warning. you should HAVE to give a reason for the warning not just give one without a reason i once saw a reason th reason was . Just a period nothing of real reason
here is a scenerio
person 1 posts a joke in a thread. no warning
person 2 quotes person one says LOL. gets warned
person 3 quotes person one and says that was so funny LOL. no warning
they both said the same thing why should someone get warned for saying something in a different way?
