The ads on the site are starting to get pretty annoying to put it lightly.
I really do not appreciate **** like this and I'm not going to put up with it.
I'm not going to adblock, I'm just going to leave. This isn't some egomaniac threat like: "Oh, I think I'm so important, the forums will never be the same without me". Who cares, I'm one guy. I'm just letting you know, if this continues I will leave and I don't think I'm alone on this.
but if it wasn't going to be changing... I don't think I'd blame you. I've quit sites over that sort of thing myself. A website should be usable.
I suggest giving it a bit of time and seeing if things like that get worked out, as implied.
That is an advert that if you click or rollover for 3 seconds it plays a video, the solution is to not rollover or click.
Edit: Actually, no it doesn't look like one of those. Can you confirm this is a pop-up and you didn't trigger it? If it is a pop-up I'll talk to the ad guys, we're NOT having **** like that here, ever.
I did not trigger it. I have triggered the rollovers by accident but this one popped over the thread as I started to read. Mouse wasn't near the ad space.
At first I wasn't sure but then I noticed the top ad was for Intel Smart TV tech and I hadn't even seen the bottom ad because I had JUST loaded the page.
And of course I'm not leaving the forum this instant. I've seen this sort of thing a whole lot when sites start out with ads. I just wanted to share my experience (and make my opinion clear in no uncertain terms in case this was an approved type of ad I'd be seeing more of). You guys seem to agree with me so I trust that you're working on it.
Yeah, this is a problem curse face apparently. If anyone ever experiences one of these adverts please PM me including your location and the name of the advertiser (or any info on the advert you can, what product) and we'll get it removed. The issue is advertisers slip them in, curse have a guy who's job it is to police the adverts.
So yeah, if you experience this PM me with your location and the advert.
Why not? I both adblock, and use a custom /etc/hosts file. (I'm using Linux) If you hadn't brought it up, I wouldn't have been aware of the fact that this site had any ads at all.
The commercialisation of the Internet has been completely arbitrary; there has never been any legitimate need for it whatsoever. Most people might not remember this, but before it became mainstream, for 12 years the Internet was primarily the domain of universities. Business didn't exist here, and it was not needed for allowing the network to continue to function, at all. I've always felt that the Internet would be a lot better off, if money had never become associated with it.

Except one of the sites I administer relies on ad revenue to pay for hosting. Before the ad network got uppity about the cussing on the site, we made about $100/mo, about half of our hosting bill.

That's because the internet was small and universities are well funded. Networks cost money to run, universities had money to cover these costs. Privately owned servers do not have money to cover these costs, so they have to charge for their services.

If you think "used only for academic purposes and not readily accessible by the general public" is better, sure.

This is quite easily one of the most stereotypical Linux user replies ever. Honestly, without advertising, you wouldn't be using Linux right now, let alone any other OS. Hey, you might've been using something completely different to access the internet.
There's nothing wrong with advertising. Sure, there are some exceptions such as the one in OP's post, but normally ads are just a way of getting people to know about your product.

Last month we paid $2,300 to keep these sites online.
Exactly the point. 10-15 years ago, a forum like this could have existed solely on Usenet, and other than their own ISP charges, it wouldn't have cost anybody a cent.

I don't think you understand, unless you're saying if it had existed 15 years ago there'd be barely any traffic? This forum could never have existed 15 years ago if we were to assume the same traffic levels, the hardware to power this and the bandwidth would have cost hundreds of thousands. We have more traffic than any site had 15 years ago.

I'd agree with Criticsquid. I think a better solution is that the forums could legitimately seek more (some??) funding from Mojang...I've bought two minecraft accounts, but I'm not going to stop using Adblock, so Mojang has my money but the forums don't...

I really hate the ads, but I don't have a problem with just ignoring or getting used to them.

Yes, I would be. I've been using it since 1997.
