The three main games I follow super actively are Pokemon, WoW and Minecraft. For Pokemon news I can check Serebii, and for WoW news I can check MMOChampion or Wowhead (usually both, to make sure I get everything). Even if I don't know any news is coming around, I'll occasionally check them out to see if anything interesting has been announced. These sites always have news up as soon as its out, and for big events, have live updates.
As far as I'm aware, no Minecraft fansite meets this standard. It's really strange to me that the News section of this site has no word of the Nether Update yet. Minecon is the biggest event of the year, after all, so it's not like the update announcement was a surprise. I would think that Minecon would drive a lot of traffic to this site, too, so it seems like a bit of a missed opportunity (if the news was up in a timely manner, I would think that'd encourage more people to come here in the future for news).
For me personally, I watched the stream but had some buffering issues, and I was hoping to come here to get the details I missed. And to be clear, I'm not necessarily blaming any of the people behind the news posts for this. I don't know what timezones they're in, or in what capacity they work here. Are they full-time, or volunteers? Do they have other responsibilities on the site? Or in real life? Obviously these are important questions, so I don't wanna start a crusade.
Maybe it's just a case of needing more people behind the news. In my eyes, a site like this needs to post all official news ASAP. Not just the announcements during Minecon, but also everything leading up to it. Why was there nothing at all on the biome vote? I would expect a news post for each biome announcement (as they were spread out over the days leading up to Minecon).
Just my two cents. Considering how big Minecraft is right now, it feels like a huge missed opportunity for a site like this to not be on the ball with the news. Thanks for reading.
Please do remember alot of the sites you mentioned have staff just for that role, currently the news here is done by one of the forum admins, and we (mods and admins) are volunteers.
That was my suspicion, but I wasn't sure. As I say, this thread wasn't meant to be a knock on anyone in particular, especially not the person who is posting the news. I was just curious about the whole thing.
Obviously the forum is still in a transitional period, and there's a lot of legwork that goes into finding new people and a process which will cover everything efficiently without turning it into literal slave labour. So I appreciate that it's a bit harder than a forum post saying "lol get more people or something" might make it seem.
We did originally have Sacheverell doing news, but he left to greater things, then citricsquid took over while looking at a replacement, then the forum changed hands, maybe the new owners will have ideas towards the news and updating them more often.
