The Windows 10 store Minecraft is part of Minecraft: Bedrock Edition, while Java Edition is the original; one is coded in C++, the other in Java (surprisingly), so without special tools, no, you can't connect between versions. It would have been better for you to buy Java Edition, because I think (unless something's changed) you get a free copy of Win10 along with it.
If you're still confused about all the names, AntVenom did a video on it:
Rather than figure out myself, I'll just ask.
I've got the windows store Minecraft, can that be used to enter the Java edition servers listed in the forums?

They are completely different versions.
Psst!, If I have grammar or spelling errors, correct me. You will help improve my English.
Mentioning the Java servers was just an example, to find the right thread on the website.
I'm guessing then I would be browsing the multiplayer thread under the section simply called "Minecraft" in the forum for servers to join?
That is correct. The section labeled as "Minecraft" is the version that is covered on Microsoft's Windows Store.
