After many failed attempts at both playing and designing roleplays, I noticed a problems with many of the combat systems I tried to use. The statistical combat system normally results in very mechanical dialogue and it is very difficult to balance the numbers on different sets of equipment. While cinematic based combat results in more natural dialogue, the fight normally has no decisive winner. Hybrid combat system tend to work better but differing understandings of how the numbers affect the combat can cause debate over the results. Is the poor combat system a problem on the system side or is this a problem with the genre? Is this a player side problem? Other things i haven't thought of? If this not true, can someone show me an rp where the combat is done right and there is always a clear winner.
Meh it is Forum roleplay related. Not like he can post it elsewhere. I would suggest taking a look at savage worlds and or the burning wheel Tabletop RPG's. They have a super dumbed down combat system ((As opposed to something like D&D)) Those can be easily adapted and played with to create something fairly simple yet also conclusive. Really it comes down to your GM. If the GM knows what they are doing things can be regulated smoothly and a custom system fitting the players and the roleplay can be made. If your GM doesn't really know what they are doing or doesn't have the time to carefully moderate how things should proceed the game gets out of hand really fast no matter if you use mechanics, cinimatic, or hybrid systems.
I personally would suggest ditching all stats myself. People will focus more on that instead of the story, which is not a good thing.
I believe a RP with stats like that may be more fitting in forum games due to being more gamey.
That works great if you have an experienced group. I find with less experienced groups stats are sometimes almost vital in keeping everyone in line when it comes to character abilities. Personally I prefer no stats but like I said sometimes they can really help out.
