The man dashed down the street, panting hard. His watch ticked down the time. Forty seconds, that’s all I have to do, survive for forty seconds…
He sped up, jumping over frozen pedestrians and dodging hardened traffic lights in a crazy attempt to get as far away from the blast point as possible. He turned a corner, picking up speed and then skidding to a halt. A policewoman, a frozen policewoman, turned to him and grinned. An impossibly wide grin that spread from ear to ear as her face turned a leathery brown and a horde of tentacles exploded from her back. The man turned around, sprinting away from the creature, desperation renewed. Ducking under unmoving cars, the man stood and ran for a nearby building only to see someone cockily stroll out of it. Again, he skidded to a halt, this time running for an alley, seeing power already swirling around the new and cocky arrival. Timestopper!
He glanced at his watch, twenty-five seconds. Getting them lost in the alleys might just buy him time. He froze as the opening before him was suddenly blocked by a wall of brown tentacles.
Slowly, the horrible, shriveled brown thing pulled itself into the alley way, limping on its injured third leg and grimacing from the wound on its shoulder. The man smiled to himself. He was proud to say that the only pain this thing had ever felt has been caused by him. At the same time, he turned around, halfheartedly attempting to turn back and run, but it was not to be. Behind him was the timestopper, already rippling the static air and charging up something undoubtedly lethal. The man looked back and forth, back and forth, as the two adversaries closed in. Who would he attack, who would he be killed by? But then, just as he braced himself for death, he realized he didn’t have to decide.
His watch beeped.
And the world ended…
This is part of an experiment to see what elements create the most enjoyable RPs. Your participation would be greatly appreciated to help this project along. And now, without further adieu, the roleplay:
Shattered Realm
There was another world. A world on top of ours. A world hidden between the moments, inside the cracks of time and space. A world few would ever see, a world inhabited by strange and wonderful creatures. This world was a haven, a place exclusively available to only those with certain gifts, each revealed to its bearer at the age of 10. There were thousands of different gifts, and in this new untamed land, they were put to use, creating massive cities and towns for the increasing population. Revered among all those gifted was the time stopper. The only one capable of carrying others into this world. There was a government, and hundreds of happy people living under its gracious rule.
And then there was nothing.
It ended suddenly, from what the journals and records say. It has been fifty years since the last record of this hidden civilization, and just as long since any 10 year old has been “activated”
And now, suddenly, people all over the world of nearly all ages between 10 and 20 are being activated. Many people in many places are gaining powers and entering the timeless zone. But it is different now. Nothing but ruins remain of the great cities built. Nothing but scattered journals and lore-posts remain to tell us the story of those before us. And as the first humans in over five decades taking their first, tentative steps into this new world will soon learn, something horrible has awoken. Its evil plans crippled by the temporary destruction of the timeless realm, it bides its time. But it is ready now. Once it finds a suitable servant, it’s ready to finish what it started. The only thing standing between it and its goal, is you. Can you defeat the dangers of this shattered realm? Or will you be overwhelmed and destroyed by the monsters that call it home?

My Character Sheet (Yes, I will be playing along to keep a handle on things, and no, I'm not stupid enough to make my character "The Chosen One" or anything. That's for you guys.):
Name: Jason Lowe
Age: 15
Gender: M
Power: The Healing touch. By extent, the harming touch. Much less powerful without direct contact
Appearance: A little short for his age, with dark hair and a slightly muscular build. Just enough not to be singled out as a nobody, but not enough to be important.
Bio: The kind of kid who never believed in Santa and beat others up if they did. The kind who spit in the face of the “naïve” and used the Bigfoot/Alien believers as punching bags. But now, with the entry of the stop into his life, everything he knows has been turned upside down.
Likes : People in general as well as socializing. But ever since the activation, his personality has undergone a change or two.
Dislikes: Usually the naïve and the easy to pick on type. However, how do you sort out the naïve and the enlightened?
Extras: None

Name: Xenith
Age: 15
Gender: Male
Power: Teleporting short distance
Appearance: Tall with brown hair and brown eyes. There is nothing special about his build; not amazingly muscular, not amazingly scrawny. He wears loose-fitting clothes of duller shades of any color, and has a long scar leading from the pinky of his right hand to his elbow.
Bio: The guy has never been thought of as anything special, about average in everything if you just take a glance. In reality, he is somewhat quicker and more agile than most, but also slightly weak and very claustrophobic. He'll eat just about anything, although hot dogs are his favorite food.
Likes: People (as long as they aren't jerks), hot dogs, and generally having fun.
Dislikes: Small spaces, Science, and homework.
I read the rules.
Power: He can record anything he hears at all, though only a max of three sounds, and each lasting a max of 3 minutes. Now before you think this is lame, think of it this way. He can open his mouth and a full symphony could start playing. Or perhaps the sound of nails on a chalkboard, in crystal clarity.
Appearance: Gerri is of average height and weight, though with slightly stronger arm and leg muscles than the average 14-year-old. However, this doesn't show up on his frame. He has dark green eyes, which are VERY dark green, and black hair, which he prefers to sweep backwards, out of his face. Speaking of his face, he's not that much of a looker. He got that from his father, though his dad thinks that he'll grow into his mother's looks. He ALWAYS wears cargo pants, rain or shine, and a T-shirt with no logos on it.
Bio: Gerri came from an upper-middle-class family, so throughout his life he was afforded several luxuries. He grew up with fencing lessons, swimming practice, and books. Oh so many books. He had several bookcases OVERFLOWING with books. He would read any series he picked up, even obscure foreign ones. Of course, he was regarded as gifted and placed in special classes, but he never felt any different from his classmates. Until now, he's had a perfectly normal, happy life with his friends and parents.
Likes: Reading, Fencing, Listening to classical music, Spaghetti.
Dislikes: Milk, people who pry into his life, people who assert themselves as unconditionally right, unfairness.
Extras: I DID read the rules. Just thought you'd want to know.
Name: Zachary Hales -Age: 14 -Gender: M -Power: Telekinesis -Appearance: Tall, thin kid with dark blond hair. Usually wearing a single-color T-shirt or something equally boring. He also sports a slightly crooked smile that’s a lot less noticeable than the shy little kid thinks. Essentially, the kind of average looking nerd-ish guy you see every day. -Bio: A very open-minded person. A fan of computers and not very big on sports, Zach is just your average half a nerd type kid. He usually means well, but lack of control and lack of forethought have led him into many problems in life. -Likes: Games, chess especially. Chicken, cheese, and bacon put on chicken is his favorite food. -Dislikes: Reading the rules. Most physical activities, as well as the inevitable feeling of emptyness after the initial thrill of solving a puzzle of some sort is a constant enemy. -Extras: His power is extremely unstable and difficult to control, making him dangerous to anybody nearby, himself included.
For future joiners, if your character has nothing interesting to report of the past, or something that you don't want revealed early on, simply say so.
For those who care, we all live in the same general area, and where you start is up to you.

I sling my backpack down on the desk and sit down, waiting for the spanish teacher to arrive. As usual, I sit in the "Geek" corner with all the other class brains, and we discuss absurd theories as to why the teacher is always late. I make sure to keep the conversation going, at the same time checking the clock and trying to figure out a few math probelms under my desk. Just another boring day...

(Little edit here, someone just pointed out that my age didn't work with this post...pretend I always had my age at 15...I can't believe I forgot that >_>.)
I sit down in the middle of the room, next to no one in particular. I personally was not fond of the spanish class, and was secretly planning to turn my math homework into paper airplanes during this particular one. I sigh and taking a paper with a big, red, D on the front, and a myriad of doodles around it. I glance at it a moment before starting to fold it.
I sigh and lean back in my chair. "I can't believe I'm wasting my time in such a useless class" I think, groaing to myself. Algebra 2 was almost certainly invented for the sole purpose of melting the brains of the world's teens out their ears. As I grumble to myself the teacher's words seem to fade away into nonexistance, and I feel myself drifting off to sleep. Suddenly I snap awake:
=
The world seems to shake, and a ripple of energy explodes from every direction
Everything is quiet. This is true silence. No cars in the background, no quiet hum of electricity. Complete and total silence. The world now appears fractured, wrong. Classmate's faces are blank and emotionless, deader than the dead. In front of each new entry, Xenith, Zack, and Gerri, there is a swirling vortex of energy, twisting and writhing in on itself, emitting the occasional pulse...
JASON
I stare and blink at my new surroundings, certain I must be hallucinating. I pinch myself, and wince with pain. Looking around, with what many would consider total stupidity, I reach forward and poke the energetic mass in front of me.
I blink a few times, wondering if I've randomly gone deaf and crazy at the same time or something. After a few moments of blinking, pinching, and coughing to break the silence, I decide to play things safe and attempt pushing over my desk instead of poking the wierd energy thing.
The desk is completely unmoveable, harder than steel, and almost totally without texture. Something outside lets out a bloodchilling screech, and screams through the air, passing by the classroom window in a blur. The energy vortex almost seems to pulse happily as it goes by.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
At a loss for words? Here's a few you can use: Welcome, to Night Vale...
The paper airplane strikes the energy mass just as I poke mine. Both masses suddenly slow down and cease swirling, then being to rotate in the opposite direction even faster. A series of colors jumps out of them that call to mind several images. A huge city, another energy mass, a large crowd. The images settle into a faint and comforting blackness, that calls to mind a series of jumbled words that form themselves into the voice of an elderly, cheerful man:
Hello, and welcome to the Timestop! If you are hearing this, it means you have a very special power, and simply having it allows you to enter this new world. In a few moments, your power will test itself out. We also recommend that you hold your current position, as this timestop will not last long, and any sudden teleportation may cause alarm to those in the moving world. Don't worry, you'll have plenty of time to explore our magnificent city of "Hailstone" sometime later. Please note, that because this message is completely automatic, not all information you hear will be completely up to date. Automatic Lorepost, 1899.

I stare and blink, trying to make sense of what I've just seen. I pinch myself again, just to make sure. All at once I get an odd sense of gain and loss, and look down to see that all my cuts and bruises from a fight earlier that day are gone. Oh boy, this just gets better and better...
(Feel free to test your power on your own, I'm not going to control you)
"Woah" I mumble, hoping this isn't some kind of sick joke. I try to use whatever "power" I've got, but can't seem to figure out what to do. After 10 seconds of trying I groan, sit down, and flick a pencil.

I hold my position, trying not to move too much. I try to test out whatever power I may have, closing my eyes in concentration. When I finally open them and give up trying, I'm on the teachers desk...holding the "I'm a little teapot" pose. I quickly start moving back towards my seat, hoping to get there before things unfreeze...or whatever.
I try reaching out mentally to my pencil, but can't seem to get a grip on it. A flick it towards myself without much control, and eventually just pick it up and set it down.

Wait a second...
I'm sitting on my hands....
"Woah" I repeat.
The sudden rush of sheer loudness is deafening
The sudden freshness of the air odd
The sudden movement a slight optical overload
I gasp involuntarily, trying to adjust to the noises I never realized were so loud.
