How to make a spear with a stick, a pocket knife, and some flint:
1: Find a long, sturdy, and relatively straight stick.
2: Clear it of imperfections like knots and branches. Smooth the last ~5 inches where the tip will be by peeling off pieces with the knife.
3: Cut off the end so there is a 1-2 inch, very rough circle on top. Smooth off this new top.
4: Bore down into the flat top, creating a crevice large enough to hold a rock spear tip. Leave enough on the sides to securely hold it in place.
5: Shape the flint into a sharp point (this will be the spear tip) by repeatedly striking it against a hard surface like another rock.
6: Insert the newly-sharpened tip into the spear's oddly-shaped front end. You may have to slide it in horizontally, which is good in that it shows you've made a tight fit.
7:OPTIONAL but preferred: Tie a string connecting the spear's tip and shaft with an 'X' pattern, repeated multiple times if necessary. This is not always needed, but helps keep the tip in place.
VERSION 2: I don't have any flint:
1: Find a long, sturdy, and relatively straight stick.
2: Clear it of imperfections like knots and branches. Smooth the last ~5 inches where the tip will be by peeling off pieces with the knife.
3: Continue to sharpen that tip by repeatedly slicing of strips as in step two. Continue until you have a sharp point.
