Don't misunderstand me, I love the Giant mushrooms, they add alot of personality and cool factor to the landscape.
My gripe is that making an underground mushroom farm is pretty much pointless now, and IMO the whole mechanic of getting tons of baby mushrooms from 1 giant one is Unbalanced now with the new food system.
You can just spam giant mushroom's everywhere and have a near infinite supply of mushrooms for soup, and its way too easy to get them, you don't have to wait for your farm to grow or do any kind of planning to make a successful farm.
I even go as far to make a sticky Piston mushroom farm that can raise the floors to detach my harvest, and its all pointless now.
My 2nd gripe is that you can't collect Mushroom Blocks for decoration, which would be awesome to have access to blocks that have different texture faces per block.
I'd love to build my own custom Mushroom castle, instead of being limited to a tiny 9x9 room.
I'm going to add a Poll to this topic, so please vote.
I agree with you, and I think that swamps have WAY too many mushrooms. If there are going to be giant mushroom forests, you should either be able to mine the blocks for decorative purposes, or just get one mushroom from one in ten mushroom blocks. Maybe giant mushroom blocks and small mushrooms can have the same relationship that gravel and flint do.

Yeah but its not like you can stack the soups anyways. Unlike bread which you know you can easily get by punching some grass. So while you can get hundreds of mushrooms are you really going to bring all that soup with you when you can have a neat little stack of pork/beef with you?
The truth is food has never really been that hard to obtain. Mushrooms have now just joined in the rest of the easy to obtain food.
Even if the giant mushrooms are put into their own separate biome, the abundance of mushrooms in swamps, which are common anyway, makes no big difference.
In the old days you actually had to grow and nurture your farm. You'd come back after a long day of mining and be delighted when all of your wheat is ready for harvest!
Now, you just kill a skeleton and get loads of bonemeal...
It's like Notch is adding all of this stuff just to please all of the 8-year-olds used to instant gratification.
I'd like to harvest mushroom blocks, but in all honnesty, I believe soup just needs a nerf. Theres no need for it to be the best food in the game anymore
I just like the giant mushroom for aesthetic reasons, I don't like having to use wood to make bowls and then have to carry around 5 or more, unstacked, mushroom stew and then have to carry around the empty bowls after I eat the stew. Even though it heals 1 less hunger, I prefer bread over mushroom stew.

Soup needs a nerf? Really? I stopped using soup since I think it's a pain to make. On the crafting table, it takes 3 different "ingredients". Bread only uses 3 of ONE kind of ingredient. Even before the hunger bar, I would take a stack of wheat and a crafting bench with me instead of mushrooms.
Now that we have a hunger bar, soup is somewhat pointless in my opinion. Just take a stack of bread or melon slices to eat when you get hungry.
If anything, I would submit that soup needs to be improved in some way. Maybe, make it heal hearts directly? Possibly, drinking soup should be a counter for getting poisoned by a cave spider?
Don't use the mushrooms then if you don't like them. nobody says you have to use them. I think they are fine. you can't carry too many mushroom stews without your inventory being full anyhow, so what difference does it make? you can still carry the same amount around, and you will be getting just as much shroom stews in your inventory from giant shrooms as you would with a large shroom farm. I do agree that you should be able to collect them for aesthetic reasons, but I don't think they need a nerf. If anything maybe regular shrooms can spawn less commonly.

I prefer using the giant mushrooms for building a treehouse-like home. Looks pretty cool. I've never even entertained the idea of using one to farm mushrooms, as the stew is just a pain to make.
I think the ease of a very large food supply is balanced by having to carry 4 items to eat it, rather than just one. You need both mushrooms, the bowls, and a crafting bench. Where as with any other food you can just cook or craft a stack of 64 and take it with you.

If you want a mushroom farm so bad then just make one, no one is forcing you to play the game a certain way.
So let me get this straight.
mushrooms, which need bone meal to grow into giant mushrooms, which drop a lot of mushrooms when harvested, is to over powered, when considering you need need to have two kinds of mushrooms and wooden bowls, and doesn't stack.
this is opposed too,
1) trees that drop a significant amount of saplings and bone meal instantly grows new trees, for easy and infinite lumber.
2) other foods that don't need the use of bone meal to grow, but will speed up the process, stack in all forms, and heals for more. Is far more common, and far easier to carry, with out having to either cook, and has less materials needed in it's crafting.
3) animals that in the next update will be able to reproduce by being in close proximity.
frankly mushroom farms were way too slow as is, and did not produce a viable food source. They were at best a novelty concept, and one that was interesting to try out, but with the commonality of food, the soon to be introduced breeding mechanic, I hardly think giant mushrooms are over powered. You still have to kill skeletons to get them.
yes you are right about one thing. mushroom farms are now pointless. but still, it's something to try.
This topic has got nothing to do with if they stack or not, how hard they are to craft etc. The fact is this: if you find 1 of each mushroom, and kill skeletons (or find their bones in the morning) you have a ridiculously easy food supply.
This sums up exactly what I meant.
No other food crop is this easy, its unbalanced.
And the whole "if you don't like it don't use it" is the weakest crap I've ever heard, go dig a hole so I can pour lava on your head.
I use the mushrooms / dirt & trees and i have huge massive skyscrapers of mushroom housing. I love it. I dont even bother making villages but now that these are in I love crafting intricate shroom homes. Awesome stuff on my server.
If anything I want the shrooms to spawn large naturally. Would add alot more atmosphere to the game ... plus already to live in shelter.
Only thing I can think of to make Mushroom-Soup and Golden Apples unique would be to give a 1-2 heart instant heal, + a fair hunger restoration (2-3 bars?), granted of course that Giant Mushrooms would no longer yield small crop mushrooms and only be for gathering the blocks.

I doubt they would make a solely aesthetic block. People would complain that it has no use. Now, I agree with you, it makes mushrooms was too easy to farm, that should probably be changed. They were the hardest of all the foods to obtain back in 1.7.3 (discluding golden apples and cake). Mushroom farms just were not as productive as wheat farms and other farms. So yeah, the giant mushrooms do ruin how easy they are to obtain, the fact that they are not stackable makes them slightly inferior to other foods for various reasons other people have listed, but your point does have merit.
Not to say I agree with the aesthetic block approach. I hope for people to be able to obtain the blocks, but they also have to a use besides being able to build with them. After all, you can use pistons if you wanna be the only guy on the server with a mushroom mansion in 1.8, but the blocks HAVE to have a use. In this case, the giant mushroom just requires too much for it to be worthless (technically speaking).
Now, I could think of a bunch of temporary fixes to make fans happy. Like make the giant mushrooms drop their block counter-parts, but make those blocks craft-able into mushrooms. I know this is unrealistic, but it would make an excellent temp fix. Three mushroom caps plus two mushroom stems perhaps would be the exact recipe maybe. However, if you did this I think it would only be fair to make mushroom stew stack-able. However mushroom stew would probably still be slightly too farmable so perhaps the food itself would have to be reduced too. I can’t say, this would all be speculation really and it is obvious Notch or Jeb is not going to read this EXACT post, so it just probably isn't going to happen.

(which are extremely rare to find).
And now with the Hunger system, Soup is still one of the most valuable food items for filling your tummy.
Soup doesn't require cooking, and the only resources you need to collect the items to make it is your bare hands..
