I want to know to what extent they have improved farming in 1.8. Where are the spreading melon patches we were promised? I'm disappointed with what they call a patch. The melons are too big. They should have borders similar to cactus. Also do they even form naturally yet? I've only found melon seeds in abandoned mines.
Really I want better farming to go along with the better everything else. How many people find farming boring? Is anything they've revealed so far make it any more interesting to farm? It just seems that all of it is the same repetitive thing. Only thing that is different is that Mojang is now "encouraging" us to do it more often whether we want to or not.
This way of doing things rarely ever works. No game has been praised for forcing players to do a boring task. Notch said he was going to introduce better farming into the game. Does 1.8 have anything to show for it?
I see melon and pumpkin seeds. Pumpkins barely have a purpose to exist. There is no point in wanting to grow them back. That is unless you make the patches even more rare, which just doesn't work in an SMP setting. Melon growth also seems to be bugged or something in SMP. Is this going to be the future of farming in Minecraft?
All food is going to be extremely hard to find and there wont ever be enough to go around in SMP. Is that what Minecraft is going to be? I don't accept this and neither should you.
If Mojang is going to be serious about incorporating food into Minecraft then it needs to thoroughly incorporate food sources into the environment. It needs to be more accesible and come with more variety. There needs to be more complex things we can do with food.
Farming in minecraft is stale and probably will still be stale in 1.9 if they don't start changing some things. I'm not referring to stacking food. I think that has little importance to the actual farming of food. Wheat, mushrooms, cactus, sugar canes were stackable before 1.8. It doesn't matter that you can stack bread now.
What do you think about the changes Mojang has made to farming so far in 1.8? Do you think they have met up to your expectations? Do you think there is still more things to come in 1.9?
Farming is a great source of food.... it isnt the most exciting thing in the world but it is good... the melons are excellent and grow fine for me... and wheat makes bread and grows fast
You could have to do a lot more work! One of my favorite games is harvest moon(although lately their games have been getting a little weird) and you have to do a whole lot more chores to get those. How about having to water your plants everyday or they die? That would make minecrafters very unhappy!
Melons and pumpkin seeds right now only are in the abandoned mines, but they might be made more common. You will never run out of food though. Punch any piece of tall grass! You get a seed! Or, find spiders (or webs!) and get string, make a fishing rod. Plus chicken farms are super easy and super productive once they get going! :smile.gif:
You don't have to 'sit around and wait'... If you go out and hunt you get toons of bones! I actually found a skeleton mob spawner right next to spawn where I harvest arrows and bones--infinite bonemeal and ammo for the awesome new bow!
Plus, bonemeal on a mushroom=tons of mushrooms from the giant one, so you can have plenty of soup!
I don't know how much he will want to focus on farming, it isn't exactly the main purpose in minecraft, it's just an option you can now pursue :smile.gif:
I consider using bonemeal on small mushrooms as cheating. It's stupid that you can just do that over and over again. Really don't consider that farming at all. It's more like a way to get around farming mushrooms. It's not an improvement by any means.
Really I don't like what they are doing to the mushrooms. I mean they are ruining their rarity. How many mushrooms you could find before the time that they made them grow everywhere was perfectly balanced. Now you can just get an unlimited supply when you have some bonemeal on you.
Why the hell would you even need to collect natural mushrooms anymore once you have one of each type?
I see one outcome to this situation. Mojang will nerf bonemeal or make skeletons drop bones less often. So that's great!!!
BTW I hate bread. It's the main crop of choice and its also the most boring food item in the game. Stacking bread is even more ridiculous. Imagine carrying more than 5 loafs of bread with you. I want more variety than this.
I mean who wants to picture the mighty Minecraft player surviving mostly on bread instead of meat? So boring...
Edit: Consider the fact that i find building a lot more interesting than farming. What will I struggle with now that i have to eat?? SMP setting with survival on
Oh yeah that food that comes from farming that 1.8 didn't improve upon.
What are the people who don't like farming supposed to do?
I would rather forage for food than farm it. I would rather have a non structure based place that will have plentiful sources of natural food.
Fish is a ******** source for food. String is hard to find on your first day. You should have an accesible source of food within the first Minecraft day for this system to be balanced. This needs to be true for both single player and a firstcomer to an existing SMP server, which is not the case in 1.8. It will be fixed in 1.9.
I don't like using mushroom soup so it doesn't bug me! I just have mushroom trees around my town, hehe! :laugh.gif:
I don't know what kind of improvement you'd want? Plant them, they grow, you harvest them..I think he figured people would want them to be left alone so they could mine. What are your ideas?
I consider using bonemeal on small mushrooms as cheating. It's stupid that you can just do that over and over again. Really don't consider that farming at all. It's more like a way to get around farming mushrooms. It's not an improvement by anyway.
I do think there should be an alternative/harder way to create large mushrooms, however they make fantastic temporary shelters and are easily recognizable from a distance.
Other than that Mushroom soup never really was a preferred source of food, because there are leftover bowls mucking up my inventory.

The lack of stacking in 'shrooms makes them good emergency food at a shelter and not much more... so they'll keep you alive, but aren't going to help you much on the move.
Let's not forget that the giant mushrooms require a more or less absurd amount of space. Fine outside, but inside, hard to get.
A good balance would be if the mushrooms popped immediately in full sunlight, so you couldn't just clear trees and drop a brown/red and bonemeal it. Getting enough headroom while have sun cover would be the price of the mushroom farm.

I want an accessible food source that could get on your first day. I want natural sources for food that aren't extremely hard to find/ uninteresting. I want all the things that were promised to use. Melons are so friggin unappealing to look at that i can't stand them in unsliced form.
I can't stand bread. What other sources of food can I plant in 1.8? Ummm..... UMMMM.... I don't see anything. Where are naturally spawning apple trees and a way to grow cocoa beans? I want to survive on something other than bread. I hate bread. It takes too damn much of it to do what I could do before 1.8.
I want severe limitations to how much you can stack food. Along with these limits I would like to introduce differences between foods. Some foods will restore hunger more, but what it replenishes will drain faster and others will restore it less but it will drain hunger more slowly. I want some foods to have more balanced effects. Furthermore an option to disable it would be nice.
That way we could at least have the choice to do tedious things ro not. It's just selfish to force us to do it.
These food effects would come into play with more complex foods. Making a pumpkin/apple pie will be more restorative than the items put into it. Bread will have a very insignificant effect on hunger, thus encouraging us to make more complex things that require bread.
I want milk and eggs to have more importance in the food table.
Lastly I want food spoilage. Food spoilage will play a large role in how you farm and how you eat. I want some food to be easy to access but may spoil quickly and other food last longer. I want all of this to go into which food items I grow, how much to harvest, and what I do with it. I don't want to grow the same type of food day after day after day. This is boring.
I want to have the option to get food naturally if only until I can setup a more worthwhile farm. I don't like having to start up a farm on the first day and have to make it at least until the very end of the second day into the third day to get anything from the farm. I'll be starving by that time if I don't find mobs. If I do find mobs I wont want to kill them because I wil want them to multiply later on. Why force us to make the decision to eat (that is if you get a spoil from the mob) or survive with a food bar below the amount required to heal for the first night? This is worse in multiplayer.
I shouldn't have to mod the game to enjoy it.... If you don't like this aspect of food, then tough. If Mojang truly wants food to be successful, then they need to add more aspects to food than just restoring hunger. Spoilage and hunger drain are two values that differentiate food and make it interesting.
Spoilage is needed to make easily accessible food balanced. If you could find food that does the same as bread , then that would be uninteresting. It would just be bread with a different texture and name. There wouldn't be any reason to take base foods and turn them into more complex food. I think it is a necessity for complex food to exist.
Cooked variation of food shouldn't spoil. So if you cooked your bread then it should be fine. But thing about a fully fleshed out food system. Remember foodcraft? Yeah I want something like that.
