Well, I was really glad about the experience addition in 1.8, but EXTREMELY disappointing to find out that it doesn't keep track of anything... I knew there wasn't going to be a leveling system in 1.8, but I at least thought it would have a number showing what level you are. But anyway, my idea for levels.
Right now you can gain levels quite quickly, as I can get almost a full bar from killing just to get a bit of food killing chickens pigs and cows. So I think, each level you gain a skill point of sorts. Next, there should be a skill tree of sorts, nothing too complicated, just a few buttons, looking sort of like the achievement window does now. Right now I can only think of a few buttons, each with a different picture, meaning a different skill.
-Mining(Even though it doesn't make sense to me... Killing monsters makes you better at mining)
-Starts at 5 cost, increases by one per level afterward.
-Each level increase mining speed by 5%, to a maximum of 100% (So it would take 20 level-ups to max it out, and a total of 290 points. A lot, yes, but a reasonable price to pay to double your mining speed.)
-Strength
-Starts at 10 points to upgrade, increases 5 per level.
-Increases damage done by half a heart per level, maximum of 5 heart damage increase (takes 10 level-ups to finish, 325 points)
-Eating (Need a better name for this one... Maybe Nutrition Expert?)
-Starts at 5, stays at 5.
-Food eaten gives an extra half a point of food on your hunger bar, maxing at 3 bars (6 levels to fill, 30 points to finish) (In my opinion, food needs to refill less at the start, since I collect and cook 5 steaks and I'm fine for a while.)
-Defense
-Starts at 10, increases by 10.
-Each level decreases a heart of damage all creatures do, (Doesn't effect fall damage. If you slip of a mountain you should die XD) to a maximum of 5. (5 levels to fill, 150 points to fill)
That's all I thought of at the moment. Again, I know the prices are expensive to fill, but that is an achievement I think is worth the time and effort put into it. To put every level to the max would cost a total of 795. Just under 800 levels. If you actually think about it, you kill plenty of things to get the experience needed to level 800 times, especially once you get a nice base set up and have diamonds and iron weapons and armor.

This is exactly what notch is doing. Right now, he's looking at mods and getting ideas from them. As he said in his twitter, "We are getting ideas from terraria. Be ready to expect a whole new game!" And "Better than wolves mod has inspired me to flesh the game out a bit." So yes, He's taking some mod ideas, and inserting them into the game.
