I recently died on my brother's realm, on hard difficulty. I was in the nether for the first time on the realm; had just grabbed 2 stacks of blaze rods from a spawner. I had diamond armor with maybe 1 or 2 pieces of gear with Prot. IV and the other with Prot. III. I somehow managed to fall into a lava ocean... I came prepared, luckily, and tried to ender pearl immediately after I fell in.
Unfortunately, I didn't aim high enough in my panic, and landed just short of the shore. I threw another pearl and got on land, but I was already down to maybe 1 or 2 hearts, considering lava dmg + burn + pearl dmg. I immediately ate a steak and started regenerating, but the burn wouldn't stop. It felt like an eternity waiting to see if my hunger bar would deplete at all so I could munch on another steak, but by the time it did, I already had half a heart, and as I began eating I died.
I googled my butt off to check the burn time duration. Maybe burn time is affected depending on if lava started it, or you stepped on a fire, or got hit with a fire arrow. I'm not entirely sure. The only, and I mean the ONLY duration time I could find for any type of burn damage came from the wiki on the flame enchantment for the bow. It says it does 4 damage (2 hearts) over 5 seconds, beginning after the initial bow damage. Aside from that, I can't find any more information on burn duration, aside from the fire protection enchantment, but even then it gives no figures as to actual seconds or ticks, just a duration reduction of up to 60%.
I hope someone on here can produce this little factoid of information for me.. Please and thanks
Unless it has changed since 1.6.4, 15 seconds (plus however much time you spent in the lava), which is completely independent of any factors other than Fire Protection on armor (-15% burn time per level, based on whichever piece has the highest level, and multiple pieces do not add together so 2 pieces of Fire Protection IV will be the same as a single piece, reducing duration by 60% or down to 6 seconds; maxed-out Protection reduces damage by 64% while maxed-out Fire Protection reduces it by 80%, so the worst-case fire damage is 15, regular Protection reduces it to 5.4 and Fire Protection reduces it to 1.2, all from burning only; armor itself can further reduce damage from blocks, paradoxically leading to less damage from standing in a fire block than from being on fire):
/**
* Called whenever the entity is walking inside of lava.
*/
protected void setOnFireFromLava()
{
if (!this.isImmuneToFire)
{
this.attackEntityFrom(DamageSource.lava, 4.0F);
this.setFire(15);
}
}
/**
* Sets entity to burn for x amount of seconds, cannot lower amount of existing fire.
*/
public void setFire(int par1)
{
int var2 = par1 * 20;
var2 = EnchantmentProtection.getFireTimeForEntity(this, var2);
if (this.fire < var2) this.fire = var2;
}
/**
* Gets the amount of ticks an entity should be set fire, adjusted for fire protection.
*/
public static int getFireTimeForEntity(Entity par0Entity, int par1)
{
int var2 = EnchantmentHelper.getMaxEnchantmentLevel(Enchantment.fireProtection.effectId, par0Entity.getLastActiveItems());
if (var2 > 0)
{
par1 -= MathHelper.floor_float((float)par1 * (float)var2 * 0.15F);
}
return par1;
}
Note also that if you equip Fire Protection armor after you fell in lava it will have no effect on the burn duration as it is determined when you are first set on fire, and the existing duration cannot be lowered, only increased. It does still reduce damage.
Other sources have different burn duration, for example, a fire block sets you on fire for 8 seconds (with an initial tick of fire damage and an initial "immunity" of 1 tick, which explains why you do not remain on fire if you briefly touch a lava or fire block; in the case of lava the game actually applies damage twice with the "lava" damage overriding the "fire" damage).
Great response. I think what'll help the most is messing around in creative a bit and getting a feel for everything to do with fire, lava, the nether.. Thanks!

Burn time from lava depends on how long you were in the lava. It can last literal minutes.

If I'm not mistaken, burn time is also longer in the nether.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.

Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
